Bands that were huge one minute,and then their popularity faded almost overnight

Whatever happened to the Verve?  Growing up in the 90's, you couldn't turn anything on without hearing Bittersweet Symphony.

Alanis Morrissette.  Her debut album was huge, and her stuff was all over the radio and MTV, then she seemingly dropped off the face of the earth.

bon jovi and U2 are the only two rock bands i can think of that are still extremely successful after YEARS of being around in terms of successful tours AND album sales.

Bruce Springsteen definitely falls into that category too.  He's still huge.  To a lesser extent, so is Ozzy Osbourne.  His latest album Black Rain didn't sell insanely well, but all his original albums up until Down to Earth (the last one) all went at least platinum in the U.S.  His tours have always been strong ticket sellers.

The Damned. first british punk band to release a single (in 1976 which was 'New Rose, which was as well all know later covered by GN'R. Released a month before the fist Sex Pistols single) and an album (in 1977), but they didn't have commercial success until 1982, and that only lasted for 2 albums and one stand-alone single. (though they did have 2 other top-20 singles)

Party Hard is a great song. One of those that gets you woken up in the morning!

He just released his 3rd album but only in Japan. It's not very good. I actually like his other stuff but nobody else i know does.

Any of that nu metal crap. That stuff was all over the place and the next thing you know it was gone, thank God.

As for the Def Leppard debate, there still a moderately succesful band, they still draw decent crowds and there new singles always get alittle airplay. I think they still have a hit in them. I am optimistic about this new release , sounds promising. But rock bands selling the way those guys and GN'R did back in the day are over unfortunately. A band like Leppard to go gold these days is a helluva feat in itself.
