Hi,

My name?s Jeff, longtime fan, I?m 23 and from Southern CA. I started renting a small rehearsal/recording studio a few months ago and this GN?R cover was my first ?project?. I record cover songs to dial in sounds/test my equipment before I record original music.

This is not intended to be anything other than a tribute/something for GN?R fans to hopefully enjoy. I sincerely hope this sort of thing doesn?t offend anybody in the band. I chose a song that I?ve never heard another band try to play. At first I was going to attempt ?Locomotive? but after recording a 9 minute Tool song last year I decided that sticking with something under 5 minutes in length would probably be a better idea.

I tried to stay faithful to the studio arrangement but at the same time I added some elements of the live version as well ? sped it up just a tad, kept the tracks really loud and raw sounding, etc.

Only a couple of disclaimers ? first of all, like all the other covers posted on my website, this was recorded on an old digital 8 track and was mixed live (without computers or pre-setting anything). Including mixing I spent maybe a combined 20 hours on everything. For what it is I?m happy with how it turned out, just don?t expect ?Use Your Illusion? caliber sound quality.

My only other disclaimer kind of goes without saying ? there is only one Axl Rose. I did the best I could with the time I had.

Drums, bass and rhythm guitar tracks are one take and the guitar solos (particularly the end one) were by far the most fun I?ve ever had recording anything!

Now that its all been said and done for a month or so, I?d say there are a couple of small things I?d fix, but I decided it?s good enough and probably a bad idea to spend forever perfecting it.

Dedicated to Axl, Izzy, Duff, Slash, Matt, Dizzy and Steven for inspiring me to become a musician?.and also to Ron, Frank, Robin, Richard, Tommy and Pit(t)man for keeping the band alive and doing such an awesome job!

Click the link below, it should start playing automatically. If it doesn?t start playing, it?s the top song in the player, just click the title. Hint ? it sounds best LOUD!

Cheers!
Jeff

Wow, that's an ace cover. The guitars are so close sound-wise to the actual song it's amazing; you've got Slash down to an S at some parts! The singing is good too, just not my style. (I like loud and high raspy voices, so I'm a bit biased) Overall it's great work, and I hope you continue doing what you do!

Loved it, though the guitars were really good. Even though I'm a bass player.  ok Thought your singing was best on the chorus' when it was high pitched, the low bits were good but didn't some as comfortable, don't what your usual style is.
But anyway like you said, there's only one GN'R and what you done is really, really good.   yes

congratulations man... great, great job!!
I love playing that song (i'm a guitar player, not better than you) and i know how difficult the solos are... you did an excellent jog at all instruments... and, as you said, there's only one Axl Rose, but i liked your vocals, they're original and it's better singing your original voice than making a bad Axl imitation ...

very good man!  ok

Honestly it sounds to me like the AFD line-up of GNR was doing a demo of the song in the late 80's , its got the raw AFD ( good thing ) to it. Vocals good man you didn't try to be axl rose , you added your own flavor. But really sounds like a GNR demo!! And I'm barely at the second verse hahaha!! Nailed the tone , sounds exactly like the live version for the solo dude , what gear are you using? Good stuff man no doubt. beer

Thanks everyone...I don't understand how I post a Tool cover at their website and 4,000 people hear it but I post this at 3 GN'R boards and not even half that amount have heard it...but for those of you who have taken the time to listen and give opinions, thank you sincerely, it makes the effort and time all worth it!

Honestly it sounds to me like the AFD line-up of GNR was doing a demo of the song in the late 80's , its got the raw AFD ( good thing ) to it. Thank you, that's exactly what I was going for (AFD raw feel to a UYI song), in fact, I have the Illusion demos, I agree with Slash (I prefer the raw mixes).

I used a dinky old Roland digital 8 track, everything was sent through a Carvin 12 channel P.A. head. Bass was recorded direct through the P.A. with a chorus in the spots where Duff uses it. I used a MusicMan Stingray one take for the bass track except that little intro/end solo riff was overdubbed using an old Fender Jazz (luckily my dad's a bass player and has great gear!)

Guitar gear = Les Paul Goth through my old hot-rodded 78 Marshall JMP 800 ($800 when I was 16, I'll have it the rest of my life...luckiest buy ever!), Steve Vai's Bad Horsie wah pedal...the 'sitar' part and the quiet clean overdubs were done with a 60's Fender Twin Reverb Deluxe.

The drums were one take on an old beat up Tama 5 piece, I got it used well over 10 years ago. It's pretty much impossible to get a good drum sound out of them, I'm saving up for a new kit. For now I just try to get them to 'thud' without ringing.

Thanks again everybody!  peace

So I did this "Pretty Tied Up" cover a few years ago and was really happy with the response I got from the forums as well as maybe someone in the band (or so he said!)

I wrote and recorded a bunch of original material this summer so I thought I'd share for anyone who's interested.  The songs are pretty different from one to the next, but there is definitely some GN'R influence vocally and guitar-wise on a few of the louder tracks.

To hear "Pretty Tied Up" as well as the originals, head over to www.myspace.com/marlahooch1
