Retort of the Month | 4/28/2004

Maxim Magazine, May 2004:

Say you're the guns behind Guns N' Roses and you need a frontman to replace eyebrowless loony tune Axl Rose. Where to turn? Obviously trolling rehab centers and bus stations, Slash and the guys found their man: former Stone Temple Pilot and career fuckup Scott Weiland! What could go wrong? Ignoring the offstage drama and giving Contraband a listen, we have to say ... not a damned thing. Although Rose was all maniac energy and Weiland is more boozy charm, Contraband sounds like these guys have been mainlining Appetite for Destruction. At first Weiland clearly struggles to keep up ("Sucker Train Blues"), but he finds his groove over the brash guitars and brawny drums. On "Dirty Little Thing," he knowlingly sings, "Get away from the man who's stealing your life/Get away from the drugs you're taking." He sounds like a man ready to slow down, yet he's as reinvigorated as his new mates. Welcome back to the jungle, guys.

From Scott to Jon Caramanica;

In his review of our album 'Contraband', Jon Caramanica of MAXIM knows about as much about me and my legal situation as he does about our music. The article mentions my legal status which states that I will be eligible for release from rehab in July. Sorry to break your heart and take the wind from your sails but I was sprung from rehab on the 22nd of April. Now Jon, Jon, Jon - come on now - my "boozy" charm? Unless you were born yesterday you would know I was a dope fiend, not a boozer. Let's just get down to it Jon, this album sounds nothing like 'Appetite' and you know nothing about me, so if you're gonna make a record "Album of the Month" then stop the punk-ass back-handed comments!

Let's meet up face-to-face and see just how "boozy" I am in person - when I get "manic" on your ass motherfucker!

Seems a bit whingy to me, the reviewer didn't say that much bad about him in the review, it seems mostly pretty positive.
Is Scott trying to be like Axl???

A bit more practice, and Scott might reach Axl's classic "And I'm the fuckin Serpico!" level.

How long before he starts telling people to "suck his dick!!"    rofl

Anyway, I found it funny.

Very lame Weiland.  It was generally a positive review, what's to get upset about?  If being compared to Axl sets Weiland off, well then he's going to have to write a lot of letters to the press.  It's going to happen.

Conny, chill the fuck out.  Weiland is a junky who is still detoxing...you'd be cranky too.  I can understand Scott being sensitive about the media, because he has been the target of a lot of undue criticism in the past (i'm not talking about the drugs either, he sets himself up for that criticism).  As far as Weiland trying to be Axl, give me a break.  Weiland has always been snappy and a bit quick to tell someone to fuck off.  It's not like he is new to the music scene.  he's been around since '92, and he's his own person.  He doesn't need Slash, Duff, or Matt to have an identity, anymore than they need him.  So get off this he's riding the gunners coattails shit.  It's dumb.  I know I'm on a GnR board and there is of course a lot of love for Axl.  I've got no problem with that.  He's a great frontman.  However, Scott gives anyone a run for their money live, and outside of the GnR core fanbase, Axl has squandered a lot of his mystique.

Unfortunately for him, Scott doesn't have 10% of Axl's talent, influence and charisma. He should try to do something else...

thank you kiedis.  like i said in my previous post.  Axl was a great frontman, but damn people, he didnt hang the moon.  I use was b/c what I saw on this last tour wasn't greatness.  Give Scott a fair chance.  He has no desire to be axl.  Axl didn't take out a patent on confronting the media.  If some of yall can get over your Axl fetish for just a little while, you will find scott to be a superb showman.

Weiland can be a good entertainer, but it seems from his rebuttal that Weiland took issue with the writer calling Axl "manic energy" and Scott more laid back.  If he's going to be so sensitive to those comparisons well then he's going to have a hard road to hoe.  And if we learned anything from Axl, it's when you threaten a magazine writer you better follow through, or they are always going to have the last word.

Weilands a joke hihi

When u have an arsenal of hits (and fans) behind u then maybe u can ''do an Axl''

But as drugged up loser that most people have never even heard of then he's gotta wait his turn

To be honest i found his reamrks quite funny in that he is sooooo desperatley trying to be Axl, especially the last part, ''when I get "manic" on your ass motherfucker!'', its 'get in the ring' u clown!!! hihi

To be fair the part of the review that bothered me was when he said the album was nothing like Appetitte....yay we have Stone Temple Pilots with different musicians!!!! Fuck.

STP fans will be over the moon, there fav band with 'upgrades' - however fans of good ol'rock and roll have gotta be feeling worried about now......

it's just the way Scott is, he's not trying to be a fake.
you accept Axl even after all the antics and stupid shit he's said, and yet, you won't even give Scott a chance....yeah yeah....a junkie loser? well if he is, then all the guys in the band is!
he's one of the best frontmen that has surfaced after Axl did.
some of you guys are just as openminded about Scott that you are about Steven Adler, I find that stupid.
