Hendrix.  Hands down.  I don't care if you like his music or hate his music.  The man revolutionised the art of guitar playing, pushed the limits, and influenced just about everyone since.

Claption, while being influential and pretty inventive, is waaaay overrated and nowhere near Hendrix in guitar playing, song writing, showmanship, originality...etc..

Hendrix by a nose.

But I have to disagree with (more like question) one thing that Miz said......Song Writing?? You really think Hendrix is a better song writer than Eric Clapton. Although I will say that Hendrix has a great song library for such a short time frame so it is impossible to say what he could have written if given the time that Clapton has had

This is my kind of thread good 1 Angus beer

As for Clapton vs hendrix i say hendrix, he was the best guitarist ever who revolutionized the guitar, and was a great performer trully a master at his instrument

Though i think clapton was the better songwriter

Technically yeah, but nowhere near as creative in his use of the instrument.
Different league.

Van Halen.  Yeah, I know Clapton is like Eddie's biggest influence, but, Eddie himself, influenced so many more people.  Plus, I like Van Halen way more than Clapton, it's just more interesting music, and happier.

To AdZ or any other mod reading this: Any chance of moving this to Bad Obsession, since it's more about music than actually playing instruments if you know what I mean.

You only highlighted technique.  But, Eddie's tone is about three hundred million times sweeter than Claptons.  Eddie is up there with Slash, May and SRV.  Clapton doesn't come close.

All eddie plays is fast shit, i even if u don't belive it like eddie better than clapton but clapton can make about 50 licks from 4-5 notes....eddie is overrated and has nowhere near clapton's feeling

Rolling Stone?!?!?!?! You read that list right?  Are you insane?

And even if he was rated higher than EVH on every single list ever, it wouldn't make a bit of difference to me because I will always think Clapton is overrated, and Eddie is lightyears ahead of him.

I agree 100 %, and sorry I forgot to highlight sound earlier!

Page vs. Van Halen

I'll go with Page, as good as Eddie is, I dunno, I think I like Jimmy a little better, but with no more than a hair split difference.

Yeah that Rolling Stone list was messed up because Slash wasn't on it and they had Kurt Cobain higher than Van Halen, Angus Young and Tony Iommi.. now that is messed up he shouldn't even have been on the list..

Well, like I said before, it's whether you define a good guitarist by his (or her!) technique alone, or by other things, such as songwriting ability, stage prescence, image etc..

As a songwriter, and someone who inluenced millions, he deserves to be on the list, not necessarily higher than those people, but he should be on it.  As a technician, he shouldn't, but neither should any of those guys except EVH and maybe Iommi.

But yes, thast rolling stone list was full of shit.  The funniest thing I've seen since the lyrics to Invisible Kid... [rofl]

Ritchie Blackmore?
Robert Johnson
Sun House
Merle Travis
Muddy Waters
John Mayall
Jeff Beck
And I can't believe I forgot Les Paul.
Andres Segovia
Allan Holdsworth
Clarence White

Edit to add: Michael Shenker, Uli John Roth, George Lynch, Don Dokken, Glenn Tipton, K. K. Downing, Richie Sambora, Ace Frehley, Paul Gilbert, Paul Kossoff, Joe Perry, Mick Thomson (Slipknot's #7).  That's it for now.

Second Edit to add: Whilst listening to Pink Floyd it occurred to me that no-one's said Dave Gilmour.  And I'm not sure why but Keith Richards too.

Depends on what you're basing it on.  If it's on ability to play the guitar, then I think Buckethead is up there at the top.

Keith Richard deserves to be in that list (as someone said). Hes one of the best rhythm guitarrists in rock. And he made almost all Stones songs, which is quite a qualification to be in the best guitar players list

Shawn Lane to add to the list - only seen him a couple of times from clips on this very site.  Ask Slipdisc for further info as he'll gladly supply it  hihi  Only one thing to add to that - Lane goes straight into the top 10 no questions asked.

Cobain shouldn't be in there or you might as well include most half-decent punk bands' guitarists since 1970.  Too many and not good enough!

Hendrix v Clapton - Hendrix

EVH v Clapton - EVH

Perry v Richards - Perry (but isn't Perry lead and Richards rhythm?)
