It's better to burn out than to fade away...

« on: October 14, 2004, 10:42:26 PM »

Have you noticed how a lot of rap, hip-hop, and R&B albums always have like 3 or 4 skits in-between all the songs?

What the hell's up with that?  I think it's total filler, just making up for a lack of memorable songs.  The best rap albums usually have no skits at all.  For crying out loud, if I want to buy a comedy or spoken word album, I'll go and do that!  You don't see any lame "skits" on rock albums.  ok

I agree, theyre a waste of space...with a few notable exceptions (mostly Prince Paul-related albums).

Prince Paul - A Prince Of Thieves (The first real "hip-hopera")

De La Soul - 3 Feet High & Rising & De La Soul Is Dead

Not to mention some Wu-Tang albums, which have some memorable skits.  But as a general rule, they suck.

For me, skits ruined the official release of The College Dropout... They probably snatched up a good 6-7 tracks on the CD, not including Jamie Foxx's little blurb before Slow Jamz.  Now I usually listen to the 2003 bootleg version which has no skits...

If they're going for laughs, they get it once or twice maybe, then it just ruins the flow of the album every time you put it on.  I agree, down with skits.

The 'songs' on hip-hop albums fill-in the gaps between the skits.

Hip-hop is closer to "skits" in essence than regular music, IMO.  I don't mean this to say hip-hop is a lesser art form; I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan but I like DMX and Eminem.  When I listen to the skits on the The Eminem Show, they seem to fit the vibe of the album perfectly, and only add to it, not to mention being kinda funny.  As far as it being filler, maybe it is, but at least in the case of The Eminem Show, there's still plenty of raps there.  I don't think he took any out to make room for the skits, and so if I had to choose between the same album with or without the skits, I'd definitely choose with.   ok
