Goth Rock

Does anybody else here like old goth bands, especially from the 80s? I was never too big on the goths who went to my high school - they all seemed like poseurs who liked Marilyn Manson and Slipknot. I'm more into the old 80s goth bands, especially with teased black hair and stuff. They had more of a pop sense and cool keyboards. The Cure is my favourite, of course, but recently I've begun listening to Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy, and they're both great. "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a weird fuckin' song, man. I still have yet to listen to Joy Division, though.

The Murderdolls are not a band. The Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13. That was the band.

Jesus christ! Goth kids sniff even more clue than I thought.Slipknot is to music what a dead grandmother is to sex.

I'm 37.8% sure that you would like Gary Numan quite a lot!..HAve you uh, checked him out?
If not, try songs like Down in the park, Metal and Dark by him. Gloomy&catchy, semi-cheesy synth/keyboard arrangements and somehow cynical voice, and great "Omgz!Man=machine!!" -lyrics. I like some of his stuff a lot.Down in the park gets extra double thumbs up cheers from me.
And Yeh, Cure seems to be quite hip. Just really starting to explore their stuff them myself, i like what i've heard so far.
What the hell does a band need to do in order to be a "goth band?" I have a general idea that the term is kinda like hair rock, where the most valid,um, referance point is the look of the band. It sounds all icky to me.no likey

I guess the general qualifications for a "goth band" would be black hair (possibly teased), dark lyrics, and an atmospheric, gloomy sound with lots of keyboards and echoing guitars. That's the kind of stuff I listen to in terms of goth, anyways - 80s post-punk stuff. The thing I like about it is that the lead singer is still miserable and stuff, but a lot of the songs are catchy and have good pop melodies. Take note, Radiohead.

I was going to say ..... Pink Floyd haha before you said Radiohead. so radiohead would be in a goth category?

? ?
Interesting associations, but they don't qualify as goth. Part of that is superficial - they don't wear black clothing or teased black hair, makeup, anything like that. But the lyrics are also different. There's not just one style of dark lyrics...Pink Floyd has 70s post-hippie glumness, Radiohead has whiny 90s angst. Real goth bands tend to have a more macabre style. Horror imagery, talk about doom, death, blackness, ice, cold, bleakness, etc.
Still, now that I think about it, I think Pink Floyd did have an influence on goth bands. If you listen to stuff like Bauhaus's "Bela Lugosi's Dead", it sounds like if the Floyd were a post-punk band.

Pink Floyd are my fave band I think
but to say they are goth is weird. They have goth within there music at times I'd say. & this is exacly why I don't use labels for music!! so I'm not tied down . I'm more into 'Dark Rock' or even 'reality rock' ... yes R-Rock is my new label for music.... R n R Reality Rock

I`ve always liked the cure, guess they are considered a goth band. As far as the makeup and hair is concerned, I never let that sway me one way or another if I liked the music or not. They could wear pies for hats and if they made good music, so what?

Perhaps The Cure has transcended the "goth" label...after all, they've made just as many happy pop songs as they have bleak gothic dirges. But when you dress only in black, have teased black hair and lipstick, and put out an album like
Pornography
, then you're going to be labelled goth. And there's nothing wrong with that; it's a cool genre.
And Bi Polar, I wasn't saying that Pink Floyd was goth, I'm saying that maybe some of the goth bands were inspired by them. A lot of goth stuff sounds like dark, Floyd-esque progressive rock, but with less instrumental ability.

o yea dude... I know. I was actually going to say something like..... 'well I must be goth cuzzz cuz I like dark music with keyboards.... many keyboards" lol whatever! I thought you made a great point with the Floyd similarities.... I mean, I listened to the 'Saucerful of Secrets" Album today, & if that ain't 'Goth', then damn, I would'nt know what is
