James Hetfield.  I always thought that he hit his peak as a frontman after the Black Album came out.  If you look at live footage of him in 1991 or the rest of the 90s (notice that I said nothing about the St. Anger era), he's in great voice, and he has a real intensity.  But if you look at footage of him in the 80s, which is what this Survivor is all about, he's nowhere near as good.  His voice is thin, scratchy, and all over the place in terms of pitch and volume.  Furthermore, he's less interesting in his physical actions on stage than Bach or Dickinson.  Thus, I have to go with Het, even though I think that he's a great singer overall.
