You're Gonna Die!!

« on: May 11, 2006, 06:18:57 PM »

Hello folks

I've got approximately 2000 euro to spend on a nice amp. I'd like your suggestionsif you dont mind...

I like Slash / Blues type music.

I had a look at a marshall half stack. Are half stacks too loud for bedroom playing is basically my other question?

Thanks in advance

you can play softly with a half stack, but if you are not gonna use it other places than in your bedroom you can ust buy a combo instead.... they are cheaper and kick ass for practise

Plus, an all tube Marshall-or any other tube amp- will sound best when played loud.

Thats what I suspected!

What do u guys think of the marhshall dsl 401 tube combo?? I heard its really nice but gets quite hot. And I dont think smaller combos would need to be played as loud as a half stack in order to get that nice tone?

I have a JCM900 4500 and it's fucking incredible ... I used to own a TSL60 Head and that was fucking sweet too ... but not as nice as my 900... I sold the TSL to put cash towards my 900 Head. Cheesy

That should be a good choice if you have the money. You can get a good deal if you find one used. They easily go for under $1000 used.

Peavey JSX. Most versatile amp in the world. Get the combo or a head w/ cab. If you've got the money there should be no other amp you want to buy.

Get a Vox AC-30 and a THD Hot Plate. That will take care of your noise problems and give you the sweet cranked tube sound. Trust me

Correct.

You can get a tube combo amp, but I personally wouldn't get anything louder than 50 watts for a bedroom.  I would shoot for 30 watts.  Or go with a hot plate like the person above mentioned.

Then what would you suggest for a bedroom amp then?  A 120 watt half stack that you can't turn up past 1?

I don't turn my tube combo past 2 at all pretty much. They are loud. If youy wont leave your bedroom shoot below 70watts.

^well i would but my parents would kill me.

If you dont mind spending a lot of money, these little guys sound great, especially for Slash/Bluesy tone:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Marshall-Silver-Jubilee-JCM-2558-25-50-Watts-Guitar-Amp_W0QQitemZ7413291236QQcategoryZ38075QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have the silver jubilee 100/50w head and even at 50w it's so loud that the neighbors get upset.  The combo I showed above can be switched down to 25w so you can probably get some decent bedroom playing out of it.  Just a thought!

Buy a Marshall Plexi JMP from the late 70's that's the best sounding amp Marshall ever did.
and that's slash's tone all the way, and a lot more.

If your spending that sort of money you should have no probs getting a nice amp, you just need to make sure you get the right nice amp!

What are you going to use the amp for??  Small gigs? Bedroom practise? Both?

yeah Marshall make some lovely amps but there are other companies that will deliver cool rock sounds too.  Maybe think about a Cornford Hurrcine  drool or an Orange amp they are both lovely.

Also consider the type of venues you're playing - there's no point running a 100w stack and a 4x12 cab with the volume set at 2 becuase the sound tech told you to turn it down to reduce spill.  Maybe consider going for a 30w combo with 2x12 or 2x10 running at 3/4 volume, that way you can mike up if you need more vol and still get a better tone from pushing the valves and the speakers.  You can even get 50w combos like the custom shop Hiwatt Studio/Stage that are switchable to 20w which is handy for band pratises and smaller gigs.

Get what you need, if you need an amp for at home get a small practise amp (Minimat is lush or a Laney L15 might do the job) or if your gigging get a proper gigging amp.  Don't use your giging amp for practising at home, it may cost you a fortune getting it revalved all the time.

At the end of the day, you need to try as many as possible with your own pedals and guitar - you'll know the right one as soon as you play it.   Smiley

how could i forget! The jubilee's are AMAZING!. it is slash's amp and sounds so good. Anytime i hear it im attracted to it. I was wathcing the video for Dani california-RHCP and during the solo i was like "i like this guys tone" guess what amp head he was using? yup a Jubilee. Same thing happened with a black crowes video (even though they suck)

go for it!

the man with the most jubilee experience is Slash, and he used them exculsively post AFD and before VR. Ebay is your pretty much only way to get them. Search either Jubilee or Slash under musical instruments.
