I like A minor more so than C major

« on: August 23, 2006, 12:47:00 AM »

im NOT a shredder, although i must say since i was introduced to BH, i began to appreciate it somewhat.

but lets have a discussion here:

BF seems cool, nothing against him. but he seems like a normal, typical shredder, and isn't too "tight" sounding. alittle messy, but striaght forward, amazing shred.

BH on the other hand...its unreal....but....BH is the only shredder i have heard that plays melodically. i mean, BH's shreds are melodic, they start and have a middle and then an ending. his phrasing is unparralled, he is sooo smooth sounding and effortless.

but its the fact that BH can shred, melodically, that just blows me away.

BF seems like a great guy though, happy to see him in GnR.

He is NOT an ordinary shredder. I suggest you check out Track #3 on his album Normal.

BH is the only shredder i have heard that plays melodically.

you need to check out some more shredders then man. not everyone is mindless speed for the sake of speed. of course people like michael angelo batio don't have much in the way of emotion and melody, but check out people like becker, friedman, even satriani. i always thought buckethead sounded too wierd for me, i dunno, i never liked his style. there's lots of decent shredders with a good melodic feel

Shawn Lane.
Nuff said.

Exactly!!

To me Lane (RIP), Becker, Buckethead, Bumblefoot, Cooley, Gambale and my brother's "soon to be guitar teacher" Marcel Coenen are the pinnacle of great shredding; People with the rare talent to achieve massive speed while still playing articulate notes.

Take a look at the guy Buckethead adored his whole life and based a lot of his style on,

Ron, by many, is regarded even more advanced than Buckethead. Looking at things like theory manipulation, pure speed and technicality?this seems founded. World-wide Ron is heralded as the new Zappa, believe me, they don't say that when there's anything "straightforward" or "typical" in your playing... as Zappa was the master of the unconventional. Ron is one of the craziest players of our time and nowhere near a "typical shredder".

yeah i'd say ron is way more advanced than these other guys, his shit is just off the wall madness. there's no one that is even close to being versatile as him. i get bored to tears when i listen to someone elses instrumental albums, they are just too repetitive, especially bucket. but ron has pop, rock, jazz, swing, metal, hardcore, blues, and funk down to a science.

sure there's faster like rusty, holdsworth, and satch (buckethead isn't as fast, believe it or not), but if speed was the only thing that mattered, we wouldn't be at a gnr forum.

and you know ron's shitty solo spot (besides don't cry)? he makes it sound awful on purpose, he's just fucking with everyone, he's been doing that for years, so don't misunderstand and think that's how he really sounds.  ok

oh, and buckethead is melodic about 5% of the time, i mean, has anyone here heard the bucketheadland cds?

Well, Buckethead is just as versatile as Ron. He too explores all the genres you mentioned, so I wouldn?t want to call Bucket repetitive. He?s one of the great pioneers in the genre. You?re right about Ron?s intentionally off-sounding solo spot, they don?t call those things disharmonic arpeggios for nothing. Buckethead is absolutely more melodic then 5% of the time. The biggest part of his body of work consists of soulful melodic music like Colma, Electric Tears and Population Override?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Ler in this thread. You have to see him live or solo away from Primus to hear it. But the dude is probably the best player on the planet.
