Natalie Merchant's sound is what defined 10000 Maniacs IMO. Love her stuff. Too, Sara Mclacllin is a very talented singer/songwriter. Another, that I can't remember her name, is the chick that sang for The Cranberries.

Deloras O' Riordan is the girl that sang with The Cranberries, she has a solo album out at the moment, she says The Cranberries will be recording a new album with her on vocals in the near future.

Nina Simone. She has a lot of soul and wisdom (if that's the right word) in her voice. When she sings it seems like she's lived it. Along with being a great female vocalist, I'd say she's one of the best singers of all time.

Thanks, she has a set of pipes that will convince a bunch of "Dead Heads"

If I didn't mention it, Emmylou Harris. If ever there were an angle singing, her voice is heaven!

Winehouse has a great voice indeed... I love her album. It's really sad she's allowing drama to dominate her life. She's a very talented woman who needs to learn about how to live her life without being dependant on men and circumstances. Her current situation actually raises an  interesting question (among others) I think : can you be a great artist without suffering and having flaws ?
