I bought it first day, still gets spins from me. Solid, good album.

A Looking In View and the title track are great.
Haha, I've been listening to it non-stop since the day it came out.

Since my purchase of the album, my love for Alice has been rekindled. I've been digging out my old cds of them.
I've been the same. I've never been the biggest Alice fan, maybe I'd go on a kick every once in a while, but I've been listening to Dirt and the Self-Titled a lot.

I have to say the opening track is an odd choice to open the album.   I tend to just skip straight to Check My Brain.

It's a slow epic build up of a song, I think it actually opens the album very well.

yea.. I tend to like the opening track of the album to grab you by the balls.   I think Check My Brain or A Looking in View would have done that perfectly.  But different strokes.  peace

You have to think about what this album is all about -- I don't know if opening with Check My Brain was what they had in mind.  Look at the lyrics for "All Secrets Known" and it gives you a clue...

Hope,
A new beginning
Time,
Time to start living

Like just before we died

There's no going back
To the place
We started from

Well Maynard was really good friends with Layne, and lets face it Maynard is an amazing singer and it's not too hard to replace someone when you knew them on such a personal level and you're fuckin talented like that...anyway.

I would have thought the same thing. The people at my local record store said it was flying off the shelves. But I don't know what their definition of "flying off the shelves" is anymore.

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY: The fourth quarter?s first Super Tuesday had its share of surprises, topped by Fueled by Ramen?s latest chart-topper in Paramore?s 185k-selling sophomore album?marking another #1 record for producer and new WMG Chief Creative Officer Rob Cavallo. Performing better than expected were #2 Barbra Streisand (Columbia), whose first album in six years bowed with 177k; #4 Breaking Benjamin (Hollywood, 136k); and the reformed Alice in Chains (Virgin), which debuted at #5 with 128k.

Alice in Chains Interview

Thursday, 8 October 2009

HG: There will always be fans who love the old records that you're not going to reach.

William DuVall: And that's ok. This is an invitation and you don't have to take it. But it's an invitation that's coming from a really, really truthful and very, very profound place. I think the people that take it and the people that show up to the party are going to really be rewarded. And they have been rewarded, and they're digging it.

Sean Kinney: Seeing Will just give his all every night and going at it and turning people around who have a closed mind [as to] why we're doing this is amazing. I understand [fans have] a little bit of fear and that people connected to the records we've done so strongly and I honour that completely. But it's a little rude for people who listen to those records and bond with them to try to pass judgement on us and say we don't have the right to do something.

The truth is that all of these things that they care about so much didn't happen to them: it actually happened to us. It was actually our real life. My friend's dead and I live with that every day. We've all lost people and everybody will in life. And just because you loved our record so much doesn't mean you can't move on. If we can find a way to move on and they can't then I just kind of feel sorry for people at that point. This happened to us and we can move on with our heads up and are doing it in the most honourable and genuine fashion. And you can't because you just listened to a record? That's a little sad.

HG: The first lines of 'Black Gives Way to Blue', "Hope, a new beginning. It's time to start living like just before we died" are the perfect way to open the album.

SK: And then we tell you the fact that we know, that you think you know, "there's no going back to the place we started from". We're not trying to. We've already been there. It's pointless. We're trying to move on.

It feels really good to be doing this. We mean what we're doing. We have given everything we have to doing this and I feel we've won - it's already a triumph. So as long as you believe in what you're doing, and we collectively do, that's all that matters.
