Indeed. The smiley faces are a great communication tool and act as a visual aid to the point being made. When communicating over the net, nuances of human speech are lost,(eg.humour, sarcasm), and many words are easy to misconstrue.

I agree with what stolat said, the smiley faces are a great tool to help you express your point of view when it's usually hard to pick up on sarcasm, humour etc on the net.

If someone wants to have an adult talk on MSN people should stick to it. You have to have a MSN talk where all participants feel comfortable with. So if one dislike smilies, don't use them; if one dislikes jokes, don't make jokes. It's easy as that.
It is easy to use smilies and other things to show emotions and humour or whatever, but it is useless to use them in a conversation where no humour or jokes are.

As a teacher I would encourage my students to use them. It is important that we recognise and use the tools of expression that are all around us

You need to use emoticons only when you are aware that your language skills aren't good enough and you know that the other one would have a need to interprete your sentences in order to get the meaning. If your words are clear, there will be no need for a smilie.

The skill comes in the chosing of when and where and how to use images of expression. Again, not all people are good at this.

Actors in a play have up to the first hour of a play to express who their character is so the audience may get some idea of the plot. Actors cleverly combine words expressed with feeling as an acting tool. Acting = the ultimate form of self-expression (words + body) (head + heart).
