Use Your Illusion I (1991)

« on: June 13, 2007, 05:14:28 PM »

Alright, here's the deal. We know Gavin from Bush right? The band that didn't get the respect they deserved, the band people forget about.

The "bubblegum" grunge band... blah whatever lmao.

Anyways, Gavin Rossdale has just released a John Lennon cover called "Mind Games". It's so fucking sweet. Very very good song. I haven't heard Lennon's version but this one is good... whether if it sounds like the original or not. You can get it on iTunes for 99 cents.

Gavin's has one of the best voices in rock and people forget this, and it's a sad thing too. Check it out guys... it's good.

I hated, hated, HATED Bush when they were popular, but in hindsight, they were pretty good. Maybe they were bubble-gum grunge, but they rocked and had a few really good singles. Haven't heard the new song yet by Rossdale. Ever heard the origanal "Mind Games"? Really great song, one of Lennon's best.

Gavin Rossdale's new solo album will be called "Wanderlust".

I'm really looking forward to it, one of the better songwriters alive.

Oh yeah... it must be.

Before you judge you should probably check things out.

He's got 4 albums with Bush (kickass)

1 album with institute and this is his solo thing.

He's a average guitarist but a great lyricist.

You're one of those people that hear 1-5 songs, and judge someone.

I always thought he had a cool voice. One of the worst lyricists ever though. Absolutely terrible. The one Bush album had some ok songs. I listen to it maybe once a year. Everything that followed it was bad tho, sans that remix version of the song "Mouth" from the werewolf movie.

The Deconstructed album you are referring to is terrible... stupid move by them but it still sold 1 million copies...

16 Stone 94'
Razorblade Suitcase 96'
The Science of Things 99'
Golden State 01'

Those the the 4 albums and the lyrics are very good, I disagree. It's abstract lyrical writing.

"It must be your skin I'm sinking in
It must be for real, cause now I can feel
I didn't mind, it's not my kind
Not my time to wonder why
Everything's gone white
Now everything's grey
Now you're here
Now you're away
I don't want this, remember that
I'll never forget where you're at"

That is fucking awesome writing. I love his writing so good. His band Institute is good. you don't what what you are missing until you hear the whole catalog.

Yeah, the song I was talking about was also on the soundtrack to a werewolf movie tho. I can't remember the name of it. It was with the guy from "That thing you do". Anyway, yeah I lthink the lyrics to glycerine are real good, but overall I think they're still really bad. "Swallowed" has some really terrible lyrics, as does almost every song on razorblade suitcase. Even their stuff I like more I don't buy the whole abstract thing. Kurt started it and all of a sudden by 95 you had a million bands writing lyrics that were really just nonsense. I'll buy that maybe most of Kurts songs had meaning behind them, and there are obvius exceptions like "scentless apprentice" and "sappy", however everyone who bit off of the idea, including Gavin Rossdale, are a lot harder to tolerate.

Bush has some very cool songs and I still listen to them all the time. A good rock band that didn't stick around long enough unfortunately.

The movie was called an American Werwolf in Paris I think?

"Mouth" was the song I believe.

Gavin and his nirvana comparisons... I hate that.

Bush were Bush and a good band they were. I don't see any simularity to them and Nirvana besides a few songs. "Little Things" is probably the only song that has a Nirvana flame to it. It's also a kick ass song.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Yeah, but I wasn't comparing them at all musically to nirvana. I was saying after Kurt started writing what you call abstract lyrics it sparked a bunch of bands in the 90's to write alot of songs that don't make sense unless you're trying to force it to. Bush to me were one of those bands.

Love Gavin, just thought I would say he's got a new album coming out June 3rd.

Titled "Wanderlust". The new single is currently #37 on the modern rock chart and #80 on the pop chart.

I've heard snippets of the entire album. Sounds like a awesome cd!

Here's his post... i am so damn excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good evening-

hope you're good.
before i drone on about my week for you,i have to mention the cyclone in burma and the earthquake in china.
terrible terrible times, millions of displaced people, thousands of lives lost-
make sure you turn to what you have tonight and take it all in.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/may/15/chinaearthquake.naturaldisasters

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article3930572.ece

now it seems irrelevant to write about myself but i figure these notes to be snapshots into my time and some thoughts....

so here goes and please forgive my trite details having presented the above links.
i guess i'm just reaching out to you to let you know what we've been doing.

monday we played a small acoustic show for 98.7
which was liberating and strangely nerve wracking.
but the audience was intimate and i think it turned out ok.
hope you hear it sometime.
it was good to be singing and playing for an audience.

we did a yahoo session yesterday, and a tv show today(unnamed)as it's  not out yet.
which was a total pleasure.
piece by piece we build a bridge to you.
and tomorrow aol.another stripped down session.
i'm working on some music now,a bush song in particular i haven't done in a while.
it's liberating and makes me think of the boys in the band.

and all the good times.

you'll get to hear the fruits of these labours very soon.
the record is edging closer daily.

i had planned to write a longer note to you, however by starting the note with the reports from burma and china,it doesn't feel right.

so i'd better go and allow this moment to be about what it should.

take care -and if you can't take care -take cover

Gavin's new cd will be here Tuesday!

I've heard some tracks off it and it's a good cd. Some heavy guitars but it's mostly a mellow cd.

Check out the new single "Love Remains the Same" it's on radio now!

Bob Rock produced this cd  btw

it got 2/5 stars

I've heard the cd. It's about 3/5 stars, and the review was very harsh.

They never liked Bush anyways, why start liking GAvin now?

I have no idea what it sounds like, but the review seemed pretty harsh.

I liked Bush back in the day and was into the grunge scene back in the day, so maybe I'm a bit biased.

http://music.aol.com/sessions/latest

His album came out today. Wanderlust is the title. Also, the AOL session he did is up at the link above.

He did a Qn'A and performed 6 songs. Including 2 old Bush songs, and for the first time ever he did an acoustic of "Letting the Cables Sleep".

Awesome stuff!

Gavin Rossdale's new cd "Wanderlust"

debuted at #32 on the charts this week with 15,000 solid according to Billboard.com

Not a bad debut for him. Glad he's back again with something new. Check it out guys, or assume it sucks and don't.
