I had a great time! I agree about the opening band, they were somewhat lackluster. This gave me plenty of time to stare at the ceiling and admire all the art deco in the venue. By the time the band came on, the place was packed. I could sworn they opened with Stations followed by God's Children. The heavy drumming bits of God's Children is amazing live! Idle Hands was a pump your fist in the air rocker and Seven Stories was cool and dark. When Dulli would sing in his smooth voice, Lanegan would bob his head to the music and then when it was his turn, he would bellow in his deep gravelly voice. I have to say that Misery Flowers sounds much better live, it was the highlight of the night for me. Lanegan also did a Twilight Singers song, something like 'I've been thinking about you baby, come stay with me', I dont know the song it but it sounded good. Thanks Jarmo and bazgnr for sending me to the Gutter
Hey, there's nothing wrong with *living* in the Gutter. It's amazing just how much quality music these two guys have produced in their respective careers, and the fact that they're now creating music together as The Gutter Twins is even better. If you have the time, you really should track down some of the more obscure Whigs work. Who ever thought Dulli could cover "Creep" by TLC and make it sound so good?
I'm just envious that you caught a show. I'm still hoping for some east coast dates....

There is some speculation going around that they will tour the U.S. later on in the year. I hope it's true!
Also, before I went to the Avalon, I went over to Amoeba Records, and I saw a vinyl copy of Bubblegum that would definitely find a good place in my collection.

Dulli just went up a notch in my book for looking Pitchfork straight in the eye and saying 'snarky hipsterism, exclusionary thing. It's like, "We listen to bands that haven't even formed yet." That punk rock thing of trying to be cool...' ha! take that Pitchfork!
nice little ChiDem reference too

Nice catch on that. I didn't want to draw attention to it in the original post, but it was rather cool to have one of my favorite bands reference my absolute favorite band, regardless of the context...

For Immediate Release: Gutter Twins AB Show
Last night's show at Ancienne Belgique was unfortunately cut short after 9 songs, when singer Greg Dulli became seriously ill during the performance.
While the rest of the band returned to the stage for a three song encore, Greg was rushed by ambulance to the local hospital where he was diagnosed with dehydration and hyperthermia, requiring an overnight stay and continued observation.
We are happy to report that Greg is now doing well after being put on bed rest, which unfortunately resulted in the cancellation of the show in Rotterdam.
Under doctor's orders, Greg has been told to rest for the next couple of days and as such the Gutter Twins tour will resume at Vega in Copenhagen on April 14th.
The band will make every effort to return to Belgium and Holland this Summer, and we thank those of you who sent well wishes.
Sincerely,
Scott Ford

Well we got the full set at the show in Oslo.
I think the encore looked something like this River Rise, Papillon/Shadow Of The Season, Hit The City, Methamphetamine Blues, King Only and Number Nine.
Greg did Amazing Grace as well which was a fantastic surprise!

The 25 Best Alternative Rock Bands Of The 1990s
http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/listoftheday/55358/the-25-best-alternative-rock-bands-of-the-1990s
16) Afghan Whigs: Greg Dulli was always destined for semi-greatness. In another era, with Andrew Loog Oldham promoting him, he might've been huge. Instead, he had to settle for mostly hated. He makes my fan club look like a gentlemen's auxiliary. But no matter many slings people take at this poor chap, he comes back stronger, angrier and more seductive. Black Love still sounds like a film noir where nobody survives. But they must because he went on to the Twilight Singers and the Gutter Twins with Mark Lanegan, where he continues to entertain and irritate with maximum efficiency. But stop hitting on my sister!
5) Mark Lanegan: The Screaming Trees were his day gig. His solo career was where he belonged. This dark, serious blues singer has always had the ear of the cognoscenti--from Kurt Cobain (who learned at his feet) to Greg Dulli (who now collaborates)--and with good reason. The man has a Leonard Cohen gravitas attached to his Nick Cave heart of darkness. And he'll kill you if you disagree.
