To me its the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, we lost two hugely gifted musicians in Ronnie Van Zant & Steve Gaines.

Also one close to my heart is Phil Lynott, some would say self-inflicted but only thing that matters is we lost a great performer way too early.

There are many more but these three are ones I'll never forget, all died way too young. RIP  Cry

bands i consider that could really "Play"

Pearl Jam
STP
AIC
Soundgarden

am I missing any??

4 bands in a genre that can play isn't good

Screaming Trees.  Tongue

The Beatles and Rolling Stones probably influenced a lot of shitty bands over the years but I wouldn't call them a tragedy!

yeah but after the Stones and Zep music stayed strong with Sabbath, Aerosmith etc

look at rock music the last 10 years. I mean what else is to blame if not what those people were influenced by?

I remember being older than a lot of kids when I was in school and I'd play guitar and stuff with them and all they knew were power chords and thought that was all they needed to know cause thats all the grunge songs called for.

The death of the guitar solo really killed a lot of future guitar players who are in bands now.

I see what you're saying D, but some of the grunge bands did have great guitarists and great solos in their songs.  The death of the solo was more of a result of the Nu Metal scene with Korn and Limp Bizkit.

To blame the woes of the current rock scene on Grunge is just wrong.  Those guys were playing rock n roll but it was just slightly different compared to the 80s.  Point being:  it was still rock n roll.

I'd go with both Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis and Roger Waters leaving Floyd.

To me the greatest rock album never made is the album that would come out if you mixed "The Division Bell" and "Amused to Death".

The death of John Winston Lennon is without a doubt the biggest tragedy to hit the world of rock ' roll.

So true now anything can be called Rock N' Roll just look at teen celebertys Jonas Brothers they dont play Rock N' Roll at best its alterntive so the greatest Rock N' Roll tragety is that people can do this when there music has nothing to do with Rock N' Roll.

^What about Mayhem?! One of their singers killed himself, their bassist murdered their guitarist...... they managed to make some music at some point as well I think.
