It’s definitely more in line with that old school GN’R feel. Catchy, good chorus, familiar Axl growl. Will definitely receive more ‘air-play’ than Absurd, way more radio friendly. Not that I think GN’R cares about the mainstream anymore.

Hell yeah. That is what I wanted to hear. I keep wondering why all the new song stuff is like Chinese Democracy out takes? Slash can write all these cool riffs and stuff for Myles Kennedy so why can't he for GNR? Meet in the middle guys!

I disagree with what they said; it's very much a CD style track. Slash will add his guitars and solos but it's not a riff-based song like he writes.

It isn't riff-based, and it is quite literally a song from the CD era. But, it also isn't as synth-heavy as many of the songs from that era. It is closer to Scraped than Shackler's.

well damn....It seems Axl is sitting on old songs (Chinese era) as opposed to letting Slash write new stuff to be released. Again, anybody can listen to the stuff he does for Myles and can see he still has it. With that said, I will withhold judgement til I hear hardschool

Would be interesting that Absurd dropped at Fenway Park and Hardskool at Wrigley if that's how it happens.

Absolutely. Both of those are my favorite baseball parks. Wrigleyville being number one. Maybe because I’m biased. Ha!

Both songs are great! I prefer Hard Skool... I think it's a perfect single to launch an upcoming release, or to get the general public, more aware that GnR is back! Very catchy and I can't get Duff's " Too Hard Skool" out of my head. rofl

It would get airplay by default as a new GNR single, but not much organically. It's a by-the-numbers track, let's be honest.

100 percent agreed.
Only thing I will add is that a day after it’s finally played live and/or released, people will be whining about when the band will release the next single and how it won’t be soon enough.

So, this story was picked up by one of the bigger rock stations around here, 97.7 HTZ FM in Southern Ontario (basically Toronto all the way down to Buffalo gets it). They trashed Absurd (calling it a trainwreck of a song) but mentioned there might be something new coming. I don't think they had any additional source, just recycling what made the rounds online...

That would be great. I just don't see it happening. The first 2 singles are old songs being reworked. We have had no real reason to believe they have gone into the studio and recorded or even wrote anything new. Unless an entire new album would just be old Chinese vault stuff with reworked parts, I just don't see it

Huh? Slash explicitly said they were in the studio writing, didn't he? I don't believe that he would ever agree to a whole album of just re-recording parts over existing tracks. Honestly, I'm not even convinced these first singles will be on the album. I look at Absurd like Oh My God. Just a teaser that was easily thrown together.

I haven't seen the quote, but it sounded ambiguous to me. Remember that you need to be careful interpreting the statements from this band. I took it that she was talking about pressing CD singles for Absurd.

Shadow of Your Love-AFD outtake from 1987
Absurd-Chinese Democracy outtake from 2000
Hard Skool-Chinese Democracy outtake from 2000

Permission, no offense, but we have literally no evidence that these guys have recorded one note of new material.

Let's face it.  'Absurd' has made zero impact.  I'd argue because it unplayable on the radio, given the lyrics.

'Hard School' will be played.

Agree, in principle.

But 'Absurd' was obviously worked on a bit.  That is not the demo we have from 20 years ago.

Which tells me 2 things :

- they have been in the studio
- Slash and Duff are willing to try and make this work

Both of which I find encouraging.

Pretty sure Shadow was enhanced as well. Shadow was a Hollywood Rose song!

I was encouraged for potential new music when they agreed to tour together. 5 years later we have what we have.

Oh, big time on SOYL.  That is not the demo I used to have on CD back in the day.

I'm encouraged by their work on 'Absurd' for one reason.  And it sure as shit ain't that I think it's a great song.

I am shocked to play as many CD songs as they did.  It's tapered off now, but that first leg in 2016, there were 4 CD tunes at my show.  In 2017, my show had 5.  I would think they were perfctly within their rights to say "that's not us, we are not playing that stuff".  And Axl would have to take it.  But they were both good sports.

Take that a step further.  There is probably nothing as "un-GNR" as that tune.  That was as far away as the stuff Slash and Duff normally do.  They agreed to this too.

Basically, they are bending over backwards to be accommodating to Axl.  Playing his CD stuff live.  Taking out the most foreign sounding outtake from those sessions and making it their first "new song" in 30 years.

Should there never be an album, it sure as hell ain't on Slash and Duff, right?

I could be wrong, but to me the vocals on the Shadow of your love single  sound 100 percent like Axl present day.  I’ve never seen this confirmed anywhere , but that’s just what it sounds like to me.  The drumming sounds nothing like Steven and a lot of Slashs guitar parts sound new.

Hard to know but one thing is certain is that Axl is in complete control of everything from tour dates to recycled material getting released and the others either roll over and oblige or find another band because there is no way in hell Slash and Duff would want to be involved with songs they had no part in creating let alone Chinese Democracy rejects that are starting to get released now.

Exactly. As I pointed out earlier, if in fact they have truly recorded new music they would of teased it by now I would think. Why do 2 singles of both recycled material if not for a creative difference? Look at the riffs and melodies Slash uses with Myles Kennedy and tell me why the new GNR stuff sounds not even 1 percent similar.

Two different bands, maybe? I can't say who's in control and who's not but it's obvious that both SOYL and Absurd are much different than the demo's we've heard back in the days. It's obvious as well that Slash and Duff are on them. Why the hell someone would like to here something similar to Myles anyways? Perhaps it's up to personal choice but for me Absurd is a killer and I'd prefer it over most of the Myles Kennedy stuff.

About that Hardskool link. How did fans find this out? Unlikely from my POV. You guys don't believe in the possibility that this link was actually “leaked” on purpose? To increase the hype around all this thing I mean..Too suspicious! hihi

The link is basically the same as when they started promoting Absurd. Nothing more to it than to switch out "absurd" with "hardskool" in the URL. Not unlikely someone just tried it, and it worked one day.

Shadow of Your Love-AFD outtake from 1987
Absurd-Chinese Democracy outtake from 2000
Hard Skool-Chinese Democracy outtake from 2000

Permission, no offense, but we have literally no evidence that these guys have recorded one note of new material.

Sounds like a joke, buy they're recycling 20+ years old demos and releasing them as fresh material.

Dizzy once explained that silkworms was just a demo and not meant to be released.

We ask for modern new songs and vintage enhanced bootlegs, and we get modern bootlegs and vintage enhanced demos

People go on and on about only wanting new music, band releases new music. And.... Exactly.

This is demonstrably false. Absurd was released a matter of weeks ago.

And before anyone starts in with, "it's a song that was written a long time ago ", A) it is clearly not the same song as Silkworms, B) so we're Back Off Bitch, Anything Goes, Shadow of Your Love, Don't Cry, and November Rain. All were written years before the finished product was released.

This is nothing new.

Some of the songs released on previous albums weren't even GN'R songs to begin with. Did that make the songs worse or the albums they were on worse? No....

And nowadays the age of a song it such an issue.

We also have no evidence that they haven't. Nothing you just listed is evidence that they haven't. That would be like suggesting the release of Spaghetti and Sympathy for the Devil meant CD was not being worked on. Releasing revamped old stuff does not prove you aren't also working on new stuff.

Do you think SOYL will be on the new album? No? Then why do you assume Absurd will?

I could be wrong, but to me the vocals on the Shadow of your love single  sound 100 percent like Axl present day.  I’ve never seen this confirmed anywhere , but that’s just what it sounds like to me.  The drumming sounds nothing like Steven and a lot of Slashs guitar parts sound new.

You're out of your mind if you think those are modern Axl vocals. The drums do sound like Frank though.

Do you think they could release Hard Skool tomorrow in Ohio? Or wait and release it next Friday, and play it for the two Hard Rock live show's in Florida?

If they release hardschool in the next few days and the Australia tour is cancelled then they might add more dates in North America... no? I mean they won't wait until next summer to tour again, no way Shocked

Some of you are way too fixated on the release of this song. It’s definitely going to be cool when it’s finally released, but, god damn. I see the same “when will they play/release this song?” And “fuck this band for not playing hard school tonight”Comments every single day on this forum and on Reddit. You should realize that when it’s finally released, these same people will unlikely feel any sense of satisfaction. Rather, they will enjoy it for a hot minute, and then beg/complain for more.

It will come when it comes. Until then, enjoy life.

I didn't really like ABSUЯD when it was released. I was excited to hear a new GNR song though, but I wasn't overly thrilled about it.

A month later, I've added the song to the PlayList I tend to work out to and it's a great song to listen to when you are training.

Let's see what about Hard Skool, I can't wait for the official release. We all want the song to do well on radio, YouTube, Spotify...

In any case, I'm sure they have a few tricks up their sleeve though. If and when and album is announced, it will come along with a massive single behind it.
