Title: July, 5th - Helsinki. The update / fuckin' aye I'll be there thread
Post by: Skeba on July 04, 2006, 07:13:11 PM
Okay. So I'm drunk. A bit.

I'll see you guys there. I'll be the guy sporting a Appetite For Destruction shirt (as no one else prolly will). I'm going to bed now, but I'll propably be to busy arranging the rest of the trip to swing by here, so I'll just tell everyone to have a good show, and to have a great time, and what not.

I'll see you guys around here later on.

My phone's been acting up so I don't know if I'll be able to get a full updatelist fot yall guys. But I'll do my best to do so after the gig, if the thing hasn't been takein care of....

Good night for now.

Not really a rockabilly, but classic rock yes. I think that they are way better than BFMV ;) I'm not going to see their set though.. hope I'll be in time for Gn'R :-\ When are they supposed to start? 22.00-23.00?

Don't know.. The ticket says doors 'll open at 18:30 and the playing will start at 20:00. Don't know if it means the warmup or Guns.

Hoping for the warmup.

I'm a bit hung over. Had my little sister visiting me yesterday (actually coming to the concert today with me.. ) and we "got a little bit tipsy".

Hoping for Finlandia... Wonder if Brain will return to the flock (is that a word you use about a tightly gathered group of a certain specie, especially birds? Was going to use the word flock in determing the word itself... didn't though.) I don't think I'll be driving today.

I'm a couple of km's from the arena, trying to learn some stupid computer program that was done probably around the same time than Appetite For Destruction. These systems could be updated sometimes, some new usable innovations have been made in the field lately - like a mouse to move the cursor! Anyway, time isn't exactly flying by at the moment, but I've been waiting for 15 years, maybe I can wait a few hours more.

But when are GNR supposed to start? 21:00 ?  The start time does matter for a lot of fans Coming from other places in the country and wants to get home after the concert.

I send an email about it to Welldone's promoter, but he hasn't replied yet. Anyway, I think that Gn'R is supposed to start between 21.30-22.30..

I'm pissed off 'cause I can't take my digital camera to the concert.. aaaahh.. I have a great seat for taking photos and my plans about how to get the camera inside are wasted

Btw. How long is an average show on this tour?

anything from 1hr 50 ish  to 2 hr 45 min.  sounds like the support are on at 8 and GnR would most likely be scheduled for 9.30 - but more than likely it will be a bit later than that...!  enjoy!!!  : ok:

Probably around 23 IF Axl is on time.  : ok: And set is about 2-2,5 hours. The longer the better!  :smoking:

You can't take a camera there? Not even leave it "there where you leave coats"? (don't know the word narikka in english)

Yeah I can take the camera, but I don't have a Compact Flash -card for it (I don't know where I lost it), so it's useless. But I think that you can leave cameras, recorders etc. to narikka if you get caught. But I woudn't want to wait for two hours after the show to get it back :D

And hey, the promoter said that Melrose will hit the stage at 20.00 and Gn'R "21.00?? 22.00??" :hihi:

Two quick questions:
This is just an opening band and GNR, right?
How many seats does the arena hold?
Just curious as GNR continues the tour; I'd like to see how well they're packing it in.
Thanks

No. She was having complications and probably had to go to the hospital, and Brain flew back. Complications doesn't mean she's given birth. It just means not everything was fine. Now she's given birth. Cons to Brain and his wife (who probably did the most work ;) ).

This "apparently" most likely means that skeba heard tell of that.  polly from axl? .

The show is over and I edited the setlist.

I think they were a bit confused about the new songs.

This should be the setlist unless they say otherwise:

Setlist: Welcome To The Jungle, It's So Easy, Mr. Brownstone, Live And Let Die, Robin Guitar Solo, Sweet Child O' Mine, Madagascar, You Could Be Mine, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, The Blues?, Think About You, Richard Fortus Guitar Solo, Out Ta Get Me, November Rain, Bumblefoot Guitar Solo (Don't Cry), My Michelle, Patience, Better, Nightrain

Encore: Paradise City

Axl made some comments about Sweden again....

Thanks to Aava for the setlist update and Skeba for the baby update.

Just came home from the gig, and what an awesome show it was! Axl was in a great mood, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was partly because the arena was sold out. The guy really went nuts on stage at times! The Blues was played, no I.R.S. though.

Best song of the night was definitely Better. The whole band really got into it, and it was a brilliant performance altogether :)

I have to wait almost 20 hours before I see them again! :'(  :peace:

I totally agree, the people were so much into GNR and the old songs, it was crazy. Just like back in their heyday.

By the way I didn't know they've started doing the "you sing one, I sing one" part of KOHD again, I was glad to see it back. And we managed to pull it off without having Tracy and Roberta there to help us! ;D

Great show! As someone already said, The Blues was played, but I don?t have any recollection of Chinese Democracy being played. Before The Blues Dizzy played Hanoi Rocks?"Don?t You Ever Leave Me". And Robin played some Sibelius, so it was quite a Finnish-flavoured set. :) And also some bitching about Sweden, which Axl ended saying something along the lines of: "I didn?t expect the Swedes to have a good taste, but I expected them to taste good." ?:hihi:

I'm not sure at what point The Blues was played, but it was somewhere pretty much in the middle of the setlist. As for Chinese Democracy, it was definitely _not_ played. Perhaps the person who posted it confused the song with The Blues?

If the rest of the setlist that was posted earlier is correct, it would mean that The Blues came right after Madagascar, and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case. Anyway, since I didn't write the songs down as they came, I'm not much help here...

I was thinking the same thing, replace Chinese with The Blues and the setlist should be correct I think?

hello...

what can I say... AMAZING show!! just fucking amazing.

and Axl seemed to think the same about the crowd... during long version of Knockin he said you're an amazing crowd... and he said something like "you're too kind" after some song that got a good applause.? On the other side he said he heard few "Fuck off" shouts from the crowd, but he replied that "many of you are enjoying this concert so, You fuck off, you don't have to be here"

other pointers:

- Great energy with the band, everyone seemed to give their 100%
- Brain had a baby 4th of July, so no brain playing
- No Izzy, no Baz or anything
- The band seemed very very happy, specially Axl
- They started at 22:50 local time and ended at 01:10, so it was nice 2hr 20 min set
- pyro and fireworks on some songs + confetti on Paradise

Setlist:

intro
Welcome To The Jungle
It's So Easy
Mr. Brownstone
Live And Let Die
Robin Guitar Solo (finlandia)
Sweet Child O' Mine
Madagascar
You Could Be Mine
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Dizzy Reed Piano Solo (Hanoi Rocks' Don't You Ever Leave Me) (great! :peace:)

Jammin' and bitching about swedes?
Think About You
Richard Fortus Guitar Solo
Out Ta Get Me
November Rain
Bumblefoot Guitar Solo (Don't Cry)
My Michelle
Patience
Better
Nightrain
Paradise City

... okay, I feel like something is missing between better and nightrain, but I'm not sure
... few jam sessions between the songs

the jamming with the speach on top was hilarious!!! saying something like he don't care if the swede likes him or not or what taste the swedes have, he just wanted to taste a swede... or something... you get the point... great show... shorter solos and a few songs less than in oslo...

Awesome show! Axl's voice was perfect! New songs were received very well by the crowd, especially Better. Finck played Finlandia and Dizzy played Dont Ever Leave Me by Hanoi Rocks. Axl joked about the swedish incident and was in great mood. I actually liked the guitar solos they played and they gave me a chance to catch my breath because I was jumping up and down and singing along during most of the songs. What a great show! I could not be happier right now and I get to see them again tomorrow! :)

I think dizzy fucked up at the beginning of Madagascar and Axl said "what the fuck was that", or it was a coincidence and he said it about something else.

And.. I didn't see it too well, but I think someone threw a bra on stage and axl held it up for a while  ;D

dizzy is cool as fuck, he played very beautifully his solo. He and his solo were recieved very well.

fortus was awesome! he has that great way to play rythm guitar when it looks like he's just slamming the guitar with his hand. looks great  8) and sounds great.

Robin fucked up few times, but it's rock n' roll so it's all good

This band really is BIG, 8 fucking dudes, it's a very full sound... you really realise it live.

the opening band "Melrose" sucked big time, awful.

Axl introduced finlandia as "here's someting finnish for you"

my legs are dead and voice gone... Axl's voice was perfect for the whole show.

You mean to tell me that somewhere within that 2 to 2.5 hour set, Axl and the band can't play one of these 26 songs that are nearly done?  These songs from Appetite... they've been playing them for 20 years!  I'm not the biggest Axl Solo Project fan, but I'd like to hear some more of the shit before I make up my mind for certain.  Even back in the day, GnR were playing songs from the Illusion albums well ahead before the release in 1991.  If I were expecting CD to come out this fall, I'd be a bit worried...

Man, it was abosultely amazing. Where was all the breaks and jams and waiting they're supposed to have in there? Fuck, it was almost an hour before anything like that happened (Robin's Finlandia piece was short and you can't call that a break in Finland), and I sure wanted a little break by then. Then the solo spots came, and to my surprise I enjoyed them. Dizzy's Don't You Ever Leave Me (Hanoi Rocks) was fabulous. I was thinking what he might bring to Finland after hearing his solos is Sweden and in Norway, but for some reason I never thought it could be Hanoi. The crowd picked up on the song and sang along. Ron's Don't Cry was good, too.

The setlist was good, too. I did kind of missed Chinese Democracy but I can do without IRS. Better was the best live version I have heard so far. There seems to always have been some sloppiness in that live, but now it was tight as a virgin ass. I was hoping for Madagascar but then it came so soon it sort of went by. Also the encore was only one song which was a small disappointment. Although it was so hot and there was no oxygen on the floor anymore, so it was good to get out, too.

The opening band started 21:00 (9PM) although I think they were supposed to start at 8 - probably the promoters thought it's better to open later since GNR starts late. They played 35 minutes, and when GNR took the stage about 22:47 it was a little over hour to wait. Didn't bother me and neither most of the others. One guy behind me complained and tried to BOOO for the last 20 minutes, but when they started, he was one of the most enthustiatics in the crowd. I'm sure someone wanted to see the first half of France-Portugal, there's no way that starting time was a co-incidence!

Axl was great, his sound was so good it was almost hard to comprehend. And the voice came so easily from him. My girlfriend's friend was with us, and she isn't a fan or anything, and she had this delighted wonder on her face so often when Axl went on with some high screams or stuff like that. I didn't notice that much oxygen breaks, but he did chew gum - maybe it's new oxygen gum to help him catch his breathe!

But Axl wasn't very talkative, only a couple of talks with the crowd. "So there I was...", he started and told the Sweden story. "There was six cops with leather gloves on holding me down, and Dr. Hack-a-lot tried to push me with a needle and he kept missing. There was blood everywhere, and I thought he was a fucking idiot. Then I told him, 'You're a fucking idiot.' And while I laid there, being hold down by these six cops, I noticed a girl holding the door open. She was hot, so I kind of just laid there and watched her..." And then he ended with, "I wasn't looking for Swedes with good taste, I was looking for Swedes that taste good!"

It was sort of surprising that that was followed by Think About You and not Out Ta Get Me. Later on OTGM he had the "so you can bite me!" there, too.

Another time Axl heard some fuck-yous from the crowd (I didn't hear any), and he said "Why don't you go home. I didn't invite you here, you don't have to stay. But there are a lot of others that want to stay, so I guess that's fuck you too."

I don't have any complaints about anything except that it was so fuckin' hot on the floor.

After an annoying work-related pause:

Axl threw his earpiece (during Nightrain?) and it hit the guy standing in front of me. He didn't even notice but I didn't see where the thing went. Paradise City whistle also flew straight towards me but the throw was maybe two meters too short. The microphone went way to the left.

Before the gig I was on the train to the arena, and some woman beside me talked on the phone to her friend, offering a ticket to the show. I heard her say, "the opening band starts at 8 and GNR at 9". I rudely corrected that it won't be 9, probably more like 11. Few moments later the woman, still on the phone, asked me "what kind of music they play, how would you categorize it?" I was flabbergasted, could only laugh something like "it's rock". She also asked me what were the band's hits or songs she and her friend might know... And then she said she had gotten tickets through this Events' Club presale. The real fans don't get tickets and this sort of people get the best seats. I'm convinced that group of people didn't stay until the end.

On the way back, the last and only train came about 1:30. There were probably thousands of people waiting for it. The train came, and more than? half of its coaches were empty and locked. We packed as many people as we could on the few open coaches, but lots of people didn't fit in. And then the train left with empty coaches. Way to go, VR or HKL or whatever handles those commuter trains.

I was sitting near to this chick who got a backstage pass from DEL JAMES(?) before GN'R hit the stage. He said something "after the gig you can go blaa blaa somewhere" and then he gave her some sort of VIP pass. I would've taken it too? :hihi:
He also walked several times around the floor looking for someone (girls for Axl probably?) thought that was funny...
Good gig overall. imo Richard was the guy last night. Also nice to hear Dizzy play "Don't You Ever Leave Me" before "The Blues".

Ok so the first thing I heard when I came to the gates was someone saying "Axl's plane isn't in Finland yet so they are atleast an hour late" And they were, but when WTTJ:s intro started.. nobody fucking cared about being late. I was sitting/standing right next to the stage and around me there was these fuckers who just clap their hands between the songs but nothing else. Boring place to be! But I rocked and my voice isn't that good anymore :hihi: Bumble came couple of times to the side of the stage and pointed the area where I was and tried to get the people singing and stuff like that.. well I was the only one but he showed me(?) his thumb ;D

The band was great, seemed to be in a very good mood and it was very energetic performance. Someone yelled "FUCK YOU!" and Axl goes like "Hey you don't have to be here.. you can just leave if you want, so FUCK YOU too!". Better was great, better than I thought. But during Maddy and The Blues people just went to get some hot dogs and stuff.. blaeh. I just hoped that they would play I.R.S before Nightrain or PC but they didn't :-\ During Nightrain Finck walked down to the floor and people from the front row were just touching and huggin him. And it was good to see that they really are an audience-friendly band. It's a shame that Izzy wasn't there..

The solos were amazing! I don't think that they were too long or anything, they were great! Dizzy's Hanoi-solo was something that I want to hear again, so I hope that someone really recorder this show : ok:

On the way home, there were hundreds of people waiting for the train towards Riihim?ki, and when it arrived I didn't know should I cry or laugh.. It was the shortest possible train VR could use. It took like 10-15min to get going 'cause someone was stucked between the doors.. alot of people didn't get in so they had to wait 3 hours for the next train :hihi:

There was alot of cameras, so I think that we are going to get some pics soon..

I'm not going to the show tonight, so if anyone is interested about a ticket to the club seats, please let me know!

I was _way_ too tired yesterday to write any kind of a report.

And I'm sorry for the people who wanted more live updates with more accurate setlists.. I was in a way too good of a mood to start worrying about the updates.

The band was excellent. They went on really late, which was no surprise. The band was 'supposed' to start at 9 as someone said, but I think the opening act started at nine, and GN'R hit the stage at.. well later. You can check from /J's post earlier. ?I really liked the solos, apart from Bumblefoot's solo prior to bbfoot and Robin's latter solo, which I didn't get at all. Axl was in a good mood. Didn't really get why some people yelled a few fuck you's to Axl (didnt' hear them myself), but he turned it around pretty well. The story about sweden was cool. I was 100% sure that it'd end in out ta get me, but with the twist in the end they played think about you instead. Rocked! Highlights for the show, for me, were Jungle (the start was amazing as always), Finlandia, Better, NR, and in general seeing the band in a good mood, and having a good time up there. I'm kinda sad about not having a ticket to tonights concert, but I'm so happy with last night, I don't think it could be any better.. The new songs went over well, except maybe for madagascar, which slowed the pace down a bit after a furious start. I'm glad though that they played it early in the show.

I'm not gonna go into more details as they've either been covered, or I don't see a need to. Thanks to GN'R for an unbelievable concert.

To people asking about RQ, I'm fairly sure they'll play it tonight as they are doing 2 shows in finland. They'll prolly want to mix things up a bit.

I've been in the dark about last nights football, so I'll go watch that now. Later..

The link someone posted.. I'll do a short translation.

It states that even though to some people GN'R is dead, last night proved that some rock songs are not to be forgotten. The band was late, but it was to be expected (cool that someone in the press knows a bit about GNR concerts.. :) ). The stage was pretty simplified, and Axl caused a huge reaction from the crowd as the show started. Axl was _the_ star of the night though other members of the band did a good job. The tour has been a success and one can only imagine the memories that people had passing them by as November Rain was played.

So a nice, short, positive review. :)

I was in the train to Riihim?ki, and it was quite a " nighttrain" ! It was totally full of people, you could not move there, until people started to leae the train. Nearly a fight started around one door, becouse people wanted to come in the train, but there was no room. It was very stupid thing from VR or HKL

Haha yeah it was a frigging nighttrain :hihi: There was two bums passed out on the floor too.. fucking insane. But it was a part of this great experience

Btw. Is there any info about bootlegs from this show? :o

Oh yeah, nobody hasn't mentioned? About half an hour before GNR started "the Mexican wave", familiar from soccer stadiums, went around the arena quite a few times. If only Axl had been in the country to see that!

And about the Sweden arrest, he said that the police wanted to take the blood test because "he must be on drugs because he's a bad bad American!"

So I didn't take my camera in, but here's two pictures taken with my SWEDISH phone

This was taken 21.44, and Gn'R was supposed to start like 21.00:

On the way back, the last and only train came about 1:30. There were probably thousands of people waiting for it.

Man, this is one of the reasons I love living downtown :) Had a nice walk in the warm summer night... Those taxi lines were crazy too.

It was the shortest possible train VR could use.

Just occurred to me, people who don't know that VR stands for the Finnish National Railways, might get the wrong impression :P

... okay, I feel like something is missing between better and nightrain, but I'm not sure

Robin's second guitar solo?

... few jam sessions between the songs

...that sounded like background music for 70s porn movies :P

I think it was theme from 70?s film "SHAFT"...or very similiar to those 70?s blaxploitation films. I?m pretty sure that was the vibe they were after. It sounded very good and very cool. Liked those parts very much
ps. Frank Ferrer did FANTASTIC job replacing BRAIN? : ok:
See you all tonight also (maybe ChiDem or IRS is on the setlist...or IZZY comes to jam with Melrose)

Man, that was an energetic show if I've ever seen one. Was pretty close to the stage, jumped nearly straight to the fence when WTTJ hit. Stayed there for the rest of the show. Axl was great, good spirits and smiling a lot. Fortus & Finck were fine as well, loved Finlandia and Beautiful. Some people have bitched about the solos, but I found them (as well as slower songs like KOHD) a good time to catch my break from all that moshing, so they definetly were needed. Guess I'm just getting old. Bumblefoot didn't seem to have much to do, he was somewhat invisible to me for most of the show. Then again, Don't Cry was a magical moment, with everybody near me coughing their lungs out, trying to hit the notes. Really a great idea to have a karaoke version as a solo.

The AFD offerings rocked the house, the crowd ate it all up. During the opening of Maddy, Axl teased the audience by asking "What song is this?" I screamed Madagascar, with someone else repeating it almost immediately. Good performance. However, the high point of the show for me was Better. After Patience, I started thinking 'Man, I really want to hear Better right about now' and what do you know - Finck rips into the opening riffs just then and I'm ecstatic. I think Axl quite purposefully left the 'No-one ever told me when I was alone' part for the audience once or twice, perhaps to see if there was anyone around to sing it. I tried. It was funny, I was moshing all over the place during that song while a lot of people around me just stood still. Guess we'll have to make a raincheck after the album drops. ?;D

But Better is the shit. An awesome rendition, which has to be heard to be believed. I'm officially in love with the song, which works great both in the studio and in a live setting. Once people get it under their skin, it will definetly rock out the audiences.

Oh yes, Fortus was skin and bones. Wonder if he gets fed while on tour?

Those taxi lines were crazy too.

No kidding, I stood in line for about an hour afterwards waiting for a ride.

Haha, that's a familiar feeling! I was going crazy during Better, and everyone around me was just sitting still, thinking "so what's this about then"...

^Just one of those things that happen when you know how to download, I guess.  :hihi:

And during KOHD and NR it seemed like every lighter in the house was lit, very cool. Looks like the band enjoyed themselves, although I was a bit disappointed in getting "only" PC as an encore. Could've used a song about tax revenues, but that's just me.

An amazing show, no matter what they tell me.

Anyways, amazing show. I?m speechless!
I started to cry when Axl came on stage and started to sing WTTJ!

I was also surrounded by businessmen who just sat and clapped, and they was obviously bothered by us singing and jumping around..

What a show! :headbanger:

Btw. Did anyone notice a low microphone-thing in the left side of the stage (might be on right side too but I couldn't see) that was pointed out to the crowd? It was standing over the "boxes" that were in front of the stage corner.. well nobody gets the point anyway :D But I was just thinking that are they recording these concerts and want to get some crowd noice too?

Sorry, I kind of blew it. My girlfriend managed to sneak in a camera, but then she gave it to me and I failed the camera test. A) The security went for camera flashes, so I didn't use a flash (don't know if it would have helped). B) I didn't use zoom because in my theory the photos won't be that shaken and I can anyway crop and do stuff to them with Photoshop. I really couldn't. C) I didn't want to stand there with a camera in my hand all the time, so I only took it out once in a while and then shot a dozen on the spot hoping for one or two good ones. That didn't happen.

There was about 60 photos, and these are the best so you can imagine what the rest is. Actually I have a good collection of hands, arms and back of the heads. They came nicely on the digital card! I made them pretty small so they look a little better.

http://www.tuubi.net/axe/gnr/

And soon I'll head back to arena. No girlfriend or camera this time.

A little anecdote:

I just met a friend, who works in the Hartwall Areena security, and had - as well as her peers - received orders to remove all those audience members who were spotted sporting T-shirts of the old band (sans the ones w/ Axl) or VR. Also, one person chanting for Slash was apparently thrown out, as had been ordered by the band before the performance.

None of this had obviously been told to the audience beforehand, so with some bad luck, you might get booted out. ?:nervous:

True enough. However, my point was that while they booted out a person chanting for Slash, the instructions called for even rooting out people with simply certain t-shirts on them - no other provocation required. They seemed to have wardrobe etiqeutte.? :P

edit: Also, a casual/nostalgic fan might wear a Slash-only GNR-shirt or a VR shirt simply to pay his or her respect towards Slash's AFD guitar riffs, so I can see it happening.

Considering the situation with Axl and Slash I personally wouldnt wear a Slash shirt to a Axl/Guns concert.

I saw guys in Metallica shirts, guess they were in the wrong place too, huh?

I personally think it's a part of the person's self-psyching process for a concert; wear whatever suitable shirt you got, if it helps you get into the mood. Seeing/having a VR/Slash shirt on GNR gig wouldn't bother me one bit, it's the attitude that should count.

I was at the concert and the show was great! Axl was in the top form and gave everything to the audience as well did the other members of the band. Dizzy's instrumental version of 'don't you ever leave' was amazing..such a soulfull playing form dizzy. The band got good reviews in the newspapers here in Finland because they were so good. That makes me wonder why they have gotten such bad reviews in other countries, if you play and sing as in Helsinki you should have only good reviews..

Hehe Tommy looked me many times and I gave him thumbs up a few times and he always smiled even wider and nodded  :D

Btw I was right in front of him the whole time ;) Axl looked at me also and I managed to say "Finland greets you!" to Ron when he came down during PC :D

It was fucking perfect.
