DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED To Release 'Sick' In March - Jan. 9, 2009

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED, the band formed by current VELVET REVOLVER bassist Duff McKagan (on guitar and vocals) after he left GUNS N' ROSES, has set "Sick" as the title of its new full-length album, due in late March via Century Media Records. The CD was produced by Martin Feveyear (PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, KINGS OF LEON) and will include such tracks as "Roll Away", "Forgive Me", "Sick", "No More", "Southern Girl", "No Shame" and "Translucent".

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED's latest five-song EP, "Wasted Heart", was released on September 22 via Century Media Records.

"These are purely my songs," McKagan told Billboard.com. "It's probably more derivative of my earlier years of punk rock. It's a good rock 'n' roll band. It's fun, is what it is. There's no real business and no real drama. I'm really into no drama right now," he adds, noting Scott Weiland's recent rancorous departure from VELVET REVOLVER.

In addition to McKagan, LOADED features drummer Geoff Reading (GREEN APPLE QUICK STEP), bassist Jeff Rouse (VENDETTA RED, ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE) and guitarist Mike Squires (ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE).

LOADED was formed in 1999 and has morphed several times, releasing two albums: 1999's "Live Episode" and 2001's "Dark Days".

Italian news blog Musica Metal has uploaded video footage (see below) of DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED's performance at the first edition of the Rock Of Ages festival, which was held on September 13, 2008 in Milan, Italy.

Duff was guest host on Sirius/XM Octane's Big Uns today.  He said the new CD was coming out in April.  He was plugging Loaded pretty good.  Unfortunately no GNR songs made the weekly countdown of the top 15 songs.  I would've liked to hear Duff intro one of the songs, see if he had anything intersting to say.

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED: 'Sick' Details Revealed - Feb. 18, 2009

Following the arrival of the band's 2008 "Wasted Heart" EP, DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED will release "Sick" on April 7 via Century Media Records. This marks the first full-length studio album in eight years from the band the former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER bassist formed in 1998 and grouped up with again in 2001. This is an all-out assault of pure rock and punk-infused fury that pulls no punches. LOADED encompasses what rock 'n' roll should be all about, creating memorable songs with infectious hooks.

The album's first single, "Flatline", is now streaming at Playboy.com (where Duff also pens the weekly "Duffonomics" financial column). In addition to his new blog on Playboy.com ? where McKagan says he hopes to "shed some no-nonsense light on day-to-day money issues" ? Duff has penned a two-page "Success" column in the new March issue of Playboy magazine. He also continues to contribute his "Reverb" column to the Seattle Weekly.

LOADED isn't a band merely to fill in time, to allow the famed bassist to massage a hyper publicity drive. This is all about?music.

"When this band started in 1998, I was at college studying business," recalls McKagan, who plays guitar and sings with the group. "But I was sickened by all the crap music going around at the time. Seriously, I hated all these big bands who were coming through. So, I put together LOADED to play rock music the way I wanted to do it. We had no great game plan or philosophy. We just wanted to get into the rehearsal room, begin writing songs and play music we felt."

Of LOADED's current lineup, McKagan says, "It's not as if I bumped into all of them on the street and things happened by accident. I saw Geoff Reading play drums with GREEN APPLE QUICKSTEP (a cult mid-1990s Seattle band) and he was just an animal behind the kit. I knew then that I wanted to work with him at some point. I watched Mike Squires and Jeff Rouse (guitar and bass, respectively) with their band ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE, and again they really impressed me.

"It's not that I've taken these guys out of other bands, either. It's not like that in Seattle. Good musicians tend to play in more than one band. And our producer, Martin Feveyear, is also part of the band in many respects. He's also our tour manager and our live sound engineer! It's the Seattle way. A small-town mentality.?

LOADED released "Live Episode" (1999) and "Dark Days" (2001), before other commitments meant LOADED were put on the back burner to some extent, although they never split up.

"No way!" Duff says. "We've been playing Christmas charity shows in Seattle on an annual basis over the last few years. These have been growing in popularity as well. Then last Christmas, we started to talk seriously about doing a record, which is what has led us to this place. Now, I've been stockpiling songs for LOADED all the time. I'd write something and store it away for future use, so the idea of doing a new album has always been in my mind."

"Sick" track listing:

01. Sick
02. Sleaze Factory
03. Flatline
04. IOU
05. The Slide
06. Translucent
07. Mothers Day
08. I See Through You
09. Forgive Me
10. No Shame
11. Blind Date Girl
12. Wasted Heart
13. No More

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED Films 'Flatline' Video - Feb. 25, 2009

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED spent the last few days in Los Angeles filming a video for the song "Flatline". The band says, "We can't wait for you all to check it out!"

I've never been a fan of Duff's singing so...yes - imho it's somewhere south of listenable.

Beyond the song the interview was interesting.

Who would have thought after Duff's walking zombie state towards the end of the UYI era he would come off as well as he does these days...

Dude should go into politics, gets his point(s) across without sounding offensive - or defensive for that matter...

The mix on these 2 recordings is pretty bad, Duff's singing isn't the greatest this time. On some other recordings I've heard he sounds better, on the studio recordings I have of the new album he sounds good..
It's also a bit harder to stay in tune when you're playing guitar at the same time aswell

CD and one grand prize winner will be chosen to win Duff?s autographed guitar and a personal phone call. Hey, maybe you can ask him about some of your favorite riffs!

Just tell us why you should win the CD, the guitar and the chance to talk to Duff. Entries will be judged on sincerity, humor, and general ?rockness?. Blow us away - in 200 words or less! Only enter once, or your entries will be tossed. And don?t leave those fields blank - how will we get in touch with you when you win the guitar??

About Duff McKagan

Following 2008?s ?Wasted Heart? EP from DUFF MCKAGAN?S LOADED, the band will release, ?Sick? on April 7th. It?s the first full-length studio album in eight years from the former GUNS N? ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER bassist.

Duff McKagan. A man with a big reputation through his involvement with major bands. Guns n? Roses and Velvet Revolver?you know the drill. But this isn?t about mega headlines, superstar status and volcanic ego mania. Loaded isn?t a band merely to fill in time, to allow the famed bassist to massage a hyper publicity drive. This is all about?music!

?When this band started in 1998, I was at college studying business,? recalls McKagan, who actually plays guitar and sings with this lot. ?But I was sickened by all the crap music going around at the time. Seriously, I hated all these big bands who were coming through. So, I put together Loaded to play rock music the way I wanted to do it. We had no great gameplan or philosophy. We just wanted to get into the rehearsal room, begin writing songs and play music we felt.?

To some, Loaded might appear to have a punk rock influence. Actually, this is closer to the mark than you might believe. Forget about the musicality being close to punk, it?s the attitude, as McKagan is keen to explain: ?When I was about 14, I saw The Clash play at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. That was in 1978, and it was amazing. I was expecting this superstar band to come onstage. Instead, the opposite occurred. The Clash were telling everyone that, ?We?re all in this together. The musicians, the fans, we?re part of one family?. That idea?s never left me.?

McKagan has hand-picked the members of this band, feeling that each brings something special into the camp. ?It?s not as if I bumped into all of them on the street and things happened by accident. I saw Geoff Reading play drums with Green Apple Quickstep (a cult mid-1990s Seattle band) and he was just an animal behind the kit. I knew then that I wanted to work with him at some point. Mike Squires and Jeff Rouse (guitar and bass, respectively) I watched with their band Alien Crime Syndicate, and again they really impressed me. ?It?s not that I?ve taken these guys out of other bands, either. It?s not like that in Seattle. Good musicians tend to play in more than one band. And our producer, Martin Feveyear, is also part of the band in many respects. He?s also our tour manager and our live sound engineer! It?s the Seattle way. A small town mentality?.

The band released albums in 1999 and 2001, namely ?Live Episode? and ?Dark Days?, before other commitments meant Loaded were put on the back burner to some extent, although they never split up. ?No way! We?ve been playing Xmas charity shows in Seattle on an annual basis over the last few years,? says McKagan. ?These have been growing in popularity as well. Then last Xmas, we started to talk seriously about doing a record, which is what has led us to this place. Now, I?ve been stockpiling songs for Loaded all the time. I?d write something and store it away for future use, so the idea of doing a new album has always been in my mind.?

The process of working on the new record, has excited Duff beyond expectations. ?We all knew it would be fun to go into the studio (Jupiter in Seattle) and do a new album, but it?s actually been so inspirational. This isn?t a stellar Pink Floyd kinda effort. But it perfectly represents what we do so well.?

An EP, ?Wasted Heart?, has already given everyone a taste of what?s to come, and the foursome?s togetherness is reflected in the fact that they took the opportunity to work on fresh songs during their recent tour of the UK and Europe.

?We practically lived on a tour bus, and we?d break out the acoustic guitars and write some new material. So ?Sick? is constantly evolving.? That tour itself has given Loaded another major boost. ?We never expected the gigs to be so packed, and there were a lot of younger people turning up as well. Everyone seemed to appreciate what we?re about. Gilby Clarke [former Guns n' Roses guitarist] came to see us in Los Angeles at the Viper Room not so long ago, and he couldn?t believe how we did things. He called up the next day and was just amazed that we were so down to earth. No egos. No big star trips. Four guys enjoying the music and loving being in the same band.

?To me, Loaded is a group of equals. This isn?t a solo project where I pay some hired hands to play my songs. I might have the name, but we?re a real band. These guys aren?t afraid of me. And people are coming to the shows because they like Loaded, not because they?re fans of something else I?ve done.?

So, how would McKagan sum up this band for those who?ve never seen or heard them before? ?Loaded is the band to make you realize how seriously the music industry takes itself.?

I know last night, I was dying to hear Duff's new CD. I could've easily Downloaded, listened and then went and bought it today.

U  know what?

I didn't and I was excited all day today and couldn't wait to get to the store to buy it. Listened to it on the way home and it is a great experience. I did the same For Prince's last week and will do so in the future.

Only thing I will DL is a band I don't like but am maybe curious about.

I DL U2's, hated it, deleted it, didn't buy it.

I will never DL anything GNR related ever again. It absolutely destroys the experience.

I am listening to the CD now for a week, bought it from amazon.de.
The extended version with the additional DVD.
And to me the record is simply great, basic rock tunes mixed with some punk elements.
Really a great record, nearly as good as Beautiful Disease and for sure better than Believe In Me or Dark Days.
I compared it to Duff's solo stuff too because he wrote most of the songs on "Sick".

Review:  Sick

April 18, 2009 ET

Former Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, who now holds that position in Velvet Revolver, also maintains a lower-profile career with this Seattle-based band. "Sick" is McKagan and Loaded's first album in eight years, so introductions may be in order: The lineup includes drummer Geoff Reading from Green Apple Quickstep and Alien Crime Syndicate guitarist Mike Squires and bassist Jeff Rouse. McKagan succeeds as a singer on these songs with simple, straightforward, honest and infectious hooks. He understands what people want from these tunes, which are lyrics they can sing along with and bop their heads to. He's particularly effective on "Translucent," which will have you instantly singing the words that you never heard before. Rock warrior McKagan even sounds comfortable on "Mother's Day" which could be described as soft punk.?Patrea L. Patterson

I wish people would read the liner notes before writing reviews... Jeff Rouse sings Translucent!
It's a fantastic album, and the musicians are all brilliant.  Jeff is probably one of the most under-rated bass players in the world right now.

It's funny... my favourite bass players in the world are all interconnected.

Duff McKagan and Tommy Stinson obviously both GN'R bass players.  And Jeff Rouse plays in Loaded, and also played as part of Tommy Stinson's backing band on the Village Gorilla Head tour in 2004.

ALBUM REVIEWS

New Sounds: Duff McKagan's Loaded

Eden Munro / eden@vueweekly.com

Duff McKagan's Loaded is really just a revised version of Loaded, the band McKagan started up between his departure from Guns N' Roses and the formation of Velvet Revolver, with his name tacked on the front to cash in on some of the popularity that he re-achieved when VR hit the airwaves. That sort of commercial angle is demeaning to the band's new full-length record. McKagan isn't out to rewrite any rules with this one, so a toss-off punk thrasher like the title track fits just fine on the front end of the album, introducing the band's street-level sensibilities. It's not the best track here, but it sets the tone nicely and is a refreshing departure from the arena rock that McKagan plies during his day job. And while McKagan's punk-rock youth is largely the inspiration behind the music on Sick, songs like "Flatline," "IOU" and "Blind Date Girl" demonstrate his knack for a killer melody, too. This puts VR to shame and it'd be nice to hear McKagan spend a little more time with this band.

Actually there was another band called Loaded who threatened to sue them if they didn't change their name.

It wasn't me that instigated this but cool answer man, I was wondering why that was.  I thought they were probably forced into it to sell more.  I saw them and it was a really cool show.  I just got the album and havent giving it a proper listen just yet.  I wish they had of put some of the GNR covers on the DVD as well though!

u need a music history lesson no offense

Even if you don't like his music, to dismiss his talent is really close minded and short sighted.
I was joking about that - but anyway, I think it's you that needs a music history lesson no offense. I mean if you honestly think Prince is the greatest something is wrong with you.

Who plays, writes and produces everything of the quality he has done?

Most people are great at one maybe two things, he is great at EVERYTHING

that is my point. name me one single indiviudal that can play and do the things different genres of music etc as well as he can and with as much success etc.

I may be contributing to this thread veering wildly off topic, but Trent Reznor.

And to attempt to bring it back on topic... Duff doesn't do too bad himself.

Listen to the NIN catalog from start to finish, and then tell me he has only one style... there's tons in there.
Also, he goes into a bit of freeform jazz on the Lost Highway soundtrack (track title - Driver Down), and his hip hop work with Saul Williams is some of the best music in that style to come out in years.

And I take it you won't pay attention to pleas to bring this back on-topic... because whether or not Prince is the greatest musician ever has absolutely no relevance to this topic.

Duff McKagans Loaded: Sick

The album for your summer?

by Shawn Loeffler
Apr 17, 2009

If you?re looking for a B-side to your summer, Duff McKagan?s Loaded?s Sick is it. I say B-side because while Sick may not be the first album you reach for this summer, it?ll be the one that lurks in the background, the one you prefer and the one you keep in constant rotation. Not to discount the success that Duff McKagan has had with Velvet Revolver, but it?s a shame that former members of great bands who make a go at it for themselves get shoved in a corner and relegated to exist in rock and roll purgatory because amazing albums, such as Sick, often go overlooked and undervalued.

For those who are hoping that Duff McKagan?s Loaded is aiming to recreate the sound of pre-Chinese Democracy Guns N? Roses, this isn?t the album for you. If, however, you want a simple, back-to-the-basics rock album with catchy riffs, traces of punk roots, and junk guitar, then Sick might be your salvation. Lyrically, Sick is an album that makes social commentaries (?Sick?), talks about addiction (?The Slide?), and praises the power of love (?IOU? and ?Wasted Heart?). Musically, it?s sonic and slick with moments of endearment. Yes, Sick has grit, but for an album coming out of rainy Seattle it`s surprisingly hook-driven and L.A. sounding at times; you could almost say it`s Cheap Trick-ish, but with more punk sensibilities. All in all, it sounds cathartic and retrospective.

Duff sounds fantastic on vocals and on guitar, the latter of which approaches the sound of a bluesy Johnny Thunders on ?Wasted Heart.? Although four of the tracks on Sick come from the 2008 EP release Wasted Heart, there are no gaps or jerky movements in its fluidity, except for ?Blind Date Girl,? which sounds out of place with its horn section. Duff?s supporting cast (Mike Squires, Jeff Rouse, and Geoff Reading) is solid and tight, but this is clearly McKagan?s show. Sick`s first single, ?Flatline,? is another criticism of society, but there`s just a bit too much radio-friendly pop in it for my taste.

Summer is about being stripped down; stripped-down girls, stripped -weekends, and stripped-down rock. Sick is stripped-down rock that you can feel in your groin. It`s the kind of noise you want blaring from your car on hot summer days.

Yeah... Pretty Hate Machine sounds just like The Fragile and The Downward Spiral sounds just like Ghosts I-IV and Still sounds just like With_Teeth ... What made you say that Trents a one style pony?
In short, they're both talented mother fuckers. Both do their own thing really well and they are both super talented.

Now for my opinion on things, Princes' music is a lot more stale. Disagree with that if you want, it doesn't matter - Personal opinion and all that.

I wasn't talking about preference in  music, just that he is a better overall musician

just because someone is a better musician doesnt mean you have to like them or their style more. I mean he plays 23 different instruments proficiently and has mastered pretty much every style on an album. he has written classic all time hits in various different styles from Rock to R and B to Funk.

Just seems he uses Pro Tools and Synthesizers to create the majority of his sounds. If I am wrong with certain albums I apologize. I am only going by what I've heard.

Prince is the modern day Mozart. The horn section stuff he creates is just beautiful and his guitar playing is far superior to Trents. Prince also is the better bassist, better piano player. There isnt any instrument Trent could play better than Prince on.

If u could point me to a guitar solo or something that Trent has done or give me two songs with very differing styles.

Prince has ran the gamut and has done it all very successfully.

Just want to say that Prince is the much better musician.  The songs he has written are way better than "Head Like a Hole", or "Closer".   Trent has written a few cool songs but he is nowhere near the composer, or musician, that Prince is.  Vocally Prince is way better too.    Some people would even argue that he is one of the top guitarists ever, esp. in his early days.   I'm not even really a fan but I can appreciate his talent.

Plus I doubt Trent Reznor could kick Charley Murphy's ass at basketball  ;D

Here's two songs with different styles... (i could pick more, but you specifically asked for two)

Happiness in Slavery
28 Ghosts IV

I'm really not looking to start an argument or anything, but don't go down the route of "better pianist", "better guitarist" etc. That proves nothing. I've heard songs with ONE chord that sound better (in my opinion) than some complex, 'brilliantly' composed classical orchestrations. It shouldn't matter how gifted you are at wanking off a guitar fretboard... it's song writing that matters. And as I've witnessed many times on this board (eg. Slash VS Buckethead) it's down to personal opinion and personal preference.

Guitar solos are pretty sparse within NIN material, however there are a few that are awesome. Though I get the impression you're wanting to hear Trent spaz his fingers out and wank the fretboard stupid amounts, so I won't bother with that, as that's not what he does. So in your eyes, Trent already fails at being the 'better' musician.

Doesn't really matter.

Duff McKagan's Loaded Interview

Date: 2009-04-21

The Gauntlet:  Where you at, sounds like a party?

Duff: Sorry, just ignore the background noise. We are getting something to eat here in Jacksonville Florida. It is nice out here, right on the beach.

The Gauntlet: How is the tour?

Duff: We just started in Nashville on Saturday and it was killer. We are playing some good shows. A lot of places I haven?t played before. I really like bringing this music to new people. It is going to be a challenge though in the states. Places like UK and Japan, word about bands travels quick. I think because of the geography.

The Gauntlet: How is playing the smaller stage?

Duff: I have always liked that. I think the perfect gig is the small theater. I have played all the different sized venues. There is something about playing the small, packed, sweaty venues though that is great.

The Gauntlet: After the US tour, you head to Europe?

Duff: Yeah, after these shows, we will play some really big shows in Europe like Download, Rock Am Ring and Rock Am Park. The reception has been really great so far and we can tell the word travels. A lot of people think that I have been in really big bands for so long, why would I want to go through this shit all over again. There is nothing better than when you create something and watch it spread. I don?t know if I?ll ever outgrow it.

The Gauntlet: You have been such a success in Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver, why put yourself out there.

Duff: I always put myself out there. It is the only way for me.

The Gauntlet: But this time, your name is on the band, this is your success or your failure.

Duff: Totally. I am totally stoked with the record we made. It is the most inspired piece of music I have been involved with in a long time. Commercially successful, that is anybody?s guess. Do I feel that it is a judgment on me? I don?t give a fuck. There are people who come to see us who dig it and that is all I can ask for.

The Gauntlet: You don?t need to go platinum for it to be considered successful like with other bands you have been in.

Duff: [laughs] I don?t think bands go platinum these days. We made the record for like $20k. The break even for the record is 3,000 units. If we sold 50,000 records by the end of the year, I?d be in shock. We are on an indie label, so selling 20,000 albums would make me happy, that and going out on tour with packed 500 and 1,000 seat rooms.

The Gauntlet: What lead you to sign with Century Media, great label but your band sticks out.

Duff: Yeah. When we started putting the songs together last summer, I was pretty beat up. The last few months with Scott [Weiland] were pretty brutal for me. I am a no bullshit kind of guy and I was forced to deal with a lot of bullshit. I can deal with bullshit just fine, but having the drama swirling around at all times was too much. I have seen enough of that in my life in other bands. This is not a comment on Scott, it is just drama. After all that, I went back to Seattle and just wanted to get back to some simplicity. Loaded has been a part of my life for the last ten years or so. We started putting some songs together again and got to the point of asking ourselves how we wanted to put this thing out. We were working with Bongload Records, a really small label and then Century Media came in and said they wanted to put this out. They wanted to work a rock & roll record. We will see how they do. We are more mainstream than the rest of their acts.

The Gauntlet: Was the album already completed or were you still in the studio when Century Media first heard it?

Duff: Yeah, we were working on it. I don?t know what they heard. I think they might have heard the song ?Sick? though. We were in and out of the studio in like 9 days. It was really quick. It was an easy decision to go with them and the decision wasn?t over thought at all. I just wanted to make sure the album was in the stores in the cities we are playing in.

The Gauntlet: Did you listen to a lot of British rock growing up?

Duff: Yeah I did. The chemistry of the band really came together and it really came to an apex before we put the songs together. They were more influenced by me I suppose. My influences run the gambit from Thin Lizzy to The Stooges. Mike Squires is really into indie shit and Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Our music is varied but this is just the Loaded sound. It might sound like the 70?s British bands but it isn?t on purpose.

The Gauntlet: Do you enjoy singing or being more in the background?

Duff: I actually like it. I like to sing. I have become comfortable with my range lately. When we play live, I drink a bunch of Red Bull. I have a rapport with the audience and tell a lot of jokes. I keep it fun all the time. It is just a different way for me to look at music. When I hit the stage playing bass, I have a completely different mindset than when I am singing. There is an art form to all of it. Being a good bass player takes a lot out of you, just like being a good drummer or singer does. I think there is a big misconception that singers are more talented or working harder. There is no difference as far as effort level. Just look at John Paul Jones, he was the genius behind Led Zeppelin. I think it is actually easier to sing and play rhythm guitar than to sing and play bass. I would know.

The Gauntlet: Why not Loaded, why Duff McKagan?s Loaded?

Duff: Because the band out voted me. They thought this record would be the one that gets us across the threshold here in America. I don?t know if I agree with them or not on the name, but here we are.

The Gauntlet: Nothing to do with Slash having the Snakepit, Izzy having the Ju Ju Hounds, or Steven Adler having Adler?s Appetite? Seems to be a common thing amongst the GNR guys.

Duff: I wasn?t going for that, no. It wasn?t my idea. [Duff begins having a conversation with Mike Squires] What are you looking at me for like that? It wasn?t my idea.

Mike Squires: It wasn?t our idea either.

Duff: Then whose idea was it?

Mike: It was the promoter?s. We all decided together that we agreed.

Duff: No, you guys decided. I sat there begrudgingly saying that it was gay.

Mike: Nobody wanted to put your name up there in lights.

Duff: I think you wanted to, I think it is gay myself Jason [me].

The Gauntlet: I?ll stand up for you, the few times we have met, you came across very low key and no ego at all.

Duff: Yeah, because I am a singer now I might have to get an attitude.

Mike: We aren?t in a hurry for that.

Album Reviews: Sick by Duff McKagan

Stop trying to decipher the ins and outs of Chinese Democracy. Quell that hankering for a renewed Appetite for Destruction. Check your expectations about what Duff McKagan's Loaded will be like at the door. Longtime Guns N? Roses bassist Duff McKagan stands front and center with Loaded, a project the lanky rock star has been working on for several years. McKagan?s bass is in storage when it comes to Loaded; he?s both vocalist and guitarist on this punk-influenced, dirty rock project who just issued Sick.

As a vocalist, McKagan appears to have learned from example. His adenoidal wail is incredibly similar to that of W. Axl Rose and that shouldn?t surprise anyone, given the fact that the pair made some of the most important, memorable and enduring music of the past three decades together. ?Sick? and ?Sleaze Factory? blend Los Angeles glitz, Sunset glam and grunge, Seattle-inspired guitars, all of which are kicked up by the punk rock intensity. It would be easy to write Loaded off as a vanity side project from an artist who has been fortunate to be gifted with tremendous, off-the-charts success in his other projects. It would simple to accuse McKagan of self-indulgence and ?trying to get back to? the music he evolved away from as his career skyrocketed. But that?s not the case.

Sick isn?t far removed from GN?R?s legacy, but McKagan has packed the album with a snottier, grittier, punk rock aesthetic. Bits of ?80s hair metal also dot the album?s landscape, most noticeably on ?Flatline.? McKagan penned an ?aw how sweet? ode to his wife with ?IOU,? which proves the record has heart and is more thoughtful than many other rock records in today?s marketplace. ?The Slide? is a three-chord all-out punk rock anthem. Clearly, the record experiments with plenty of flavors and seasonings. It?s no Guns N? Roses, but it?s no throwaway side deal either.

Duff McKagan tends to Loaded, search for Velvet Revolver singer continues

Published May 1, 2009

After rising to fame as a member of Guns N' Roses, and co-founding Grammy-winning rock outfit Velvet Revolver, bassist Duff McKagan is now focusing on his solo band, Loaded.

"We made a great record and that's success to me," McKagan said during an interview with LiveDaily while discussing Loaded's recently released album, "Sick." "If this band can get to the point where we're selling out 500-, 800-seat clubs in the States, that would be something. The bar is attainable. I'm not nervous. I know this band. I know the guys in the band. We're best friends and we're going to have a killer time on the road."

"Sick" marks the first full-length studio album in eight years from the band McKagan formed in 1998 and grouped up with again in 2001. Duff McKagan's Loaded [ tickets ] released "Live Episode" in 1999 and "Dark Days" in 2001, before other commitments meant Loaded was put on the back burner to some extent, although the band never split up. McKagan, who co-penned the new album with the rest of his punk-influenced band, named the album "Sick" simply because it was the first song that was written.

"'Sick' is an older song we wrote back in 2002," McKagan said. "That was sort of the cornerstone for us to start the record on. It kind of gave us a direction. We sort of go in that direction, but we veer off on 'Mother's Day' and 'Wasted Heart.' But all of the songs have a theme. It's hard, but it's also kind of dark and melancholy. There's glimpses of hope on the record. It's just like life."

McKagan said he is always writing, whether it's music for his bands or his columns that he writes for SeattleWeekly.com or Playboy.com.

"I always write songs, that's what I do," he said. "While people are thinking about going to work the next day, I'm thinking about what song I'm going to write. I'm in a very creative period in my life. I have two columns that I write every week and I'm writing music all the time. "

While he is pushing Loaded, McKagan and Velvet Revolver are continuing to look for a new lead singer for that band. Scott Weiland exited Velvet Revolver on bad terms a year ago.

"It's OK that we haven't found somebody right now because I'm able to do this," McKagan said. "But, yes, we certainly are looking. We will find the right guy."

Got the CD today, and it came with a poster and bonus DVD featuring a live gig and the webisodes.

Gotta hand it to Duff too, the packaging and artwork is all very fuckin' cool. As for the CD itself, I've only listened through once, and it's probably Duff's strongest work out of all of his solo stuff. Some very catchy melodies there and the production is top notch.

I highly recommend it to anyone who'd thinking about picking it up. : ok:

Duff McKagan a rock 'n' roll renaissance man

May 4, 2009

By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Duff McKagan is a good advertisement for the benefits of drug rehab.

Trim and toned, with a full head of blond hair and a perfectly alert brain somewhere underneath, the former Guns N' Roses bass player is lucky that he made it to 45.

In the early 1990s, when Guns N' Roses were arguably the biggest rock group in the world, McKagan participated in the requisite debauchery with his hell-raising bandmates. There are lots of good stories, but he can't remember many of them.

"I've heard great stories of (stuff) I've done, told by some pretty fascinating people," he said in a recent interview with Reuters. "(Queen guitarist) Brian May (said), 'Hey man remember that time?' Elton John told me this great story."

As the band's punk-rock spirit, McKagan bore an eerie resemblance to Sid Vicious, the former Sex Pistol who died of a heroin overdose in 1979. It looked as if McKagan might go the same way, especially after his pancreas exploded in 1994.

But McKagan cleaned up his act, and quit the crumbling band a few years later.

When it occurred to him that he was a wealthy man with no financial experience, he enrolled for a business degree at Seattle University. He remains a couple of credits shy of graduating, but has put his knowledge to good use. He writes a finance column for Playboy called "Duffonomics," and expounds easily on the big economic issues of the day.

"OLD SCHOOL" INVESTOR

Rock 'n' roll's version of American personal-finance guru Suze Orman describes his investment style as "old school," aimed at providing him with a comfortable retirement.

"People probably assume I have a lot more money than I have, and I think that's true with a lot of musicians who've been successful," he said. "We've generated a ton of dough. A ton! But nobody knows exactly how much I'm taking home, or anybody else is taking home."

His advice for shell-shocked investors? Real estate, and beaten-up sectors such as the Pacific Rim and financials.

But there's more to life than spreadsheets and textbooks, and McKagan is seeking a third shot at rock 'n' roll glory.

After Guns N' Roses imploded he formed a new band with fellow Guns survivors Slash and Matt Sorum. Velvet Revolver's debut album sold millions and won a Grammy. The follow-up was less successful, and the band fired vocalist Scott Weiland a year ago amid long-simmering tensions.

With Velvet Revolver on hiatus, McKagan has teamed up with three little-known musicians from his Seattle hometown to resurrect his side project, modestly dubbed Duff McKagan's Loaded. The band is now touring clubs to promote its new album "Sick" (Century Media Records).

McKagan has swapped his bass for a guitar, and takes on the lead vocals. During Guns N' Roses concerts, he would often perform an old punk song for the masses, and he sings a wistful tribute to dead punk rocker Johnny Thunders on their 1991 double album "Use Your Illusion."

With its aggressive riffs, "Sick" inevitably bears some Guns residue, as well as traces of McKagan's punk-rock heroes like Iggy Pop. The lyrics seem to fall into two camps: either he loves you or hates you.

DRUG RELAPSE

Before anyone asks, McKagan assures that none of the venomous songs are directed either at Axl Rose, the sole original member left in Guns N' Roses, or at Weiland.

"I am a grown-up, sort of. I'm not that vitriolic. When they (bad things) happen I try to deal with them as they happen, and exorcise that demon as it goes."

One song is particularly personal. McKagan got hooked on prescription drugs three-and-a-half years ago, and "Boom! I was off to the races. It knocked me off my feet, man. Guys like me, once you start thinking you're bulletproof that's when it gets really dangerous. I learned a great lesson from it. I let myself down. I let my whole family down. It killed me."

He teamed with his friend Trey Bruce, a Nashville songwriter, to write "Wasted Heart," in which he pays tribute to his wife, Susan, for saving his "outlaw soul."

The album was recorded in just nine days for $20,000, but McKagan sees his band as more than a fun diversion. He still lives for that perfect concert, that perfect song.

"Have you ever seen that picture of Iggy standing on top of people? That's the gig you have every once in a while that keeps you. I'm still kind of a young whippersnapper and I can go out and do it."

DUFF MCKAGAN Says He's Been Approached To Write A Memoir - May 7, 2009

Dean Goodman of Reuters recently conducted an interview with Duff McKagan (VELVET REVOLVER, DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED, ex-GUNS N' ROSES). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Reuters: Do you still have it in you to start all over again with this band, hit the road in a van, play every small town for the next two years?

Duff: "I know I have it in me. It's a band I believe in. There's a grassroots movement behind this band. People have seen us. They get on the Internet, and they bring their friends to the next gig. That's cool to see."

Reuters: You've got a wife and kids and distractions. You're not 21 years-old anymore

Duff: "Yeah. But the wife and the kids, they come out on the road. I see it as an opportunity ? summer, spring break. My daughters have grown up seeing the world. They consider themselves world citizens because they literally grew up going to Europe, going to Japan ... The payoff is that one gig you'll have ? that one gig every 10 days or something ? where everything is killer."

Reuters: Have you thought about writing a memoir like Slash did?

Duff: "I've been approached recently by different publishing houses to write a book ... If I wrote a book, '90 through '93, it's a grey area in my memory. It would open up something like, 'Here I sit in my living room. I just hit my 45th year. I remember my dad was 45. Some might have said I wouldn't have made it to this age. I've got kids underfoot.' And maybe flashback to 1994, when I was in the emergency room when my pancreas blew up. But it would have to be funny."

Scott had a big influence on picking the backing music.. according to Dave a few years ago they'd written all kinds of stuff, from Rolling Stones sounding till UYI 4 (he said 4). Probably the reason it didn't make Libertad. Which I'm happy about, cause I think I'd like this version better then a VR version.

This is a very personal song though Duff wrote for his wife, so maybe he didn't want to use it on VR stuff.

I love Libertad also but I'd take a few Loaded songs over some of the stuff on Libertad.

Duff said it.. he mentioned the trackname in an interview somewhere late 2006 or early 2007 I believe, said it was a very Stonesy tune.

I like Libertad a lot more then Contraband btw, I just think think they can a whole lot better then those two albums.

I think that's probably why. From what he's said about how songs come together I think Duff's one of those guys who just writes songs and then works out when and where they'll work best, rather than writing for a specific band at a specific time.

Also if VR had released it Scott would have been singing, and that would be a bit strange since it's about Duff's wife.

I heard the single on the radio.  XM Octane to be exact.

I couldn't believe that was Duff's voice!  He sounded....not too shabby.  Certainly different from what we have heard from Duff.

I want to buy this album.

Hi,

During any of the recent interviews Duff has given, has anyone asked him something along the lines of "in Axl roses's last statement he mentioned that he would consider working with you at some point, what is your opinion on that?"

If so, would anyone be able to post a link?  Seriously, If i ever met Duff that would be the first question i would ask.

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED Joined By COREY TAYLOR At Kansas City's ROCKFEST - May 31, 2009

VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES bassist Duff McKagan's side band, DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED, has issued the following update:

"Rockfest 2009, Kansas City ? 52,000 fucking crazy people, are you kidding me? Now that is how it's done! Sometimes these radio festivals are a bit weird. You play early, people are half asleep still (or maybe just not drunk enough yet?) and you get eight minutes to play. Yesterday was the exception to the rule. People in Kansas City are made to rock and came in force to throw it down.

"Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR) came up and nailed 'It's So Easy' [GUNS N' ROSES] with us. Brother can SING! We also saw his band play. Who else can throw the theme song from 'Cheers', NIN and PRINCE in the same set and blow your mind? Corey is the shit! Thanks, brother.

"Today we are in Indianola rocking Lazerfest. It's the last U.S. date before we head over to Europe for a month.

"Again, thanks to everyone for jumping aboard the LOADED train. We've been having a blast! Keep checking back for more upcoming tour dates. See you all soon. Don't forget that our new record, 'Sick', is out and ready for your listening pleasure. Go out and get that shit."

Goodbye Finland!

Well, goodbye Finland..... The last 3 days have been wonderful. Yesterday, we capped it off by playing the Suana Open Air festival in Tampere. It was cold as hell, but the energy of everybody there and another appearance of none other than MICHAEL MONROE! made it unnoticeable. Thanks you Finland, see you all soon!
Today we head for Rock am Ring, and our first day back on the bus. This will be first time LOADED has played Rock am Ring (Tomorrow Rock im Park!) and we couldn't be more f**king ready. Like we have stated in earier blogs, these festivals can be a bit unpredictable? No soundchecks, early set times, etc. But we come to conquer, and conquer we will!
Our record "SICK" is out, in stores, on I-Tunes, and most surely should be with you everywhere you go! So go get that shit and spread the word.
You also should be following us on twitter, its at - Duff64 - we do fun stuff everyday and if your not with us, you are missing out!

OH YEAH...........................

Today we are in Munich, Germany. Starting the first of 6 shows with Motley F**king Crue! While touring can be a blast, you don't have a lot of responsibilies. You don't really have to brush your teeth, take a shower, and you get to rock to the masses. There tends to be some downsides? This time around it seems that it all is revolving around our bus. Let me explain.... When you book a bus, there are just a few things that are important to us traveling gypsies.
1) Air conditioning
2) Power(lights, etc)
3) Internet
4) a working toilet
Well, i guess 3 out of 4 aint so bad? The toilet works! (other than it seems to always wants to overflow?)
Anyway, neeedless to say, it has been a hot and informationless week.
To catch you all up to date..... The Download Festival ruled! Thanks to everybody that came out! Another special thanks to Corey Taylor(Slipknot, Stone Sour) for once again gracing us with his rock power on "It's So Easy"! We wish he would just jump on the bus and do it with us for the rest of the month.
We are still out here in europe for the rest of the month. So dont forget to check out our tour dates, we want to see you all.
And last but not least, go out and get our new record "SICK" It's out and we want you to check it out, for reals!
Till next time.......Duff,Jeff,Mike and Geoff

Airlines are probably really hectic during that time...July 4th, delayed/cancelled flights etc.   Either that, or the tickets didn't sell.   They seem like a one-off kinda gig more than a touring band... at least in The States.  I would see them if they played my back yard, but I wouldn't drive 40 mins+ like I would with VR or GNR.

Crue, Godsmack, and Loaded is actually a pretty good lineup.  I might have to check it out now.

Loaded will not be playing at 'Crue Fest 2' after all, too bad, those would have been good shows.

I kinda thought the same when I first listened to it, but give it a few more spins, it's a real grower.

Now I absolutely love the album. : ok:

Hi all

It has been brought to my attention that many people out there think Loaded may be playing the Cruefest this summer. I just want to clarify that Loaded was never confirmed for the Cruefest in the first place. We hope to have some US tour dates coming real soon and we are sorry for the confusion and certainly any inconvenience it may have caused to any of you. We prize the relationship that we have cultivated with our hard-won fans and would hate to see that relationship damaged in any way.

Cheers to you all

Duff and Loaded

Got the album last night. Not bad at all.

I never really gave too much credit to Duff. "Believe in me" was shit really that's why I was so reluctant to get this record, but after the first spin of "Sick" I was pleasently surprised. Sure this won't come down as the record of the year on my list, but it does rock. Lyrics are what I would expect from Duff...obviosuly more coherent and meaningfull (it's been 16 years since Believe in me). Guitar riffs are similar to Velvet Revolver's two records, so it's safe to assume Duff wrote many of the VR's riffs.

I really enjoyed the track "Mother's Day"

^ To me Flatline stands a bit out from all the other songs on the album.. it sounds a bit different probably cause it's (co)written by a band outsider. There are some really cool rockers on there, No Shame, The Slide, Blind Date Girl and some nice ballads like Mother's Day and Wasted Heart electrical version. To me these type of songs are kinda what I expected from VR in the first place when they started 8)

You should check out Beautiful Disease - even better than Sick IMO.  Dark Days was decent too, much better than Believe in Me.

Doesn't sound like Duff is anywhere near finished with Loaded just yet, so VR may be pushed a little further on the backburner.

From Duff's twitter

Will be writing new LOADED songs tonite and tomorrow. Some great ideas and riffs have come on this latest tour. Excited for sure!

Duff needs to bring the guys to Baltimore, Philly, DC, or all 3 - there are some killer venues around here and I haven't been able to see the guys since Seattle in 2002 at the I-Spy with Shannon and (RIP) Lori Lepper

That show ranks up there with some of the best shows I have ever been to and I have been to GNR, Clapton, Dylan, Izzy, Dino, Foos, BB King, B Boys, etc - too many good ones to mention

Hey Duff - Get your bud Lanegan to tour with you while he is with the Soulsavers - (I love that collaboration and band)

I think Lanegan w/ Soulsavers and Loaded would be a killer co-headline - I know Lanegan loves Europe (as we all do), but c'mon!!  I was gonna go to Lollapalooza in 1996 (Metallica, Screaming Trees, Soundgarden) but couldn't convince any of my friends to go (douchbags  Cornell's voice is now shot, Trees are long gone since 2000 in Seattle, and Newstead left Metallica)

So I digress

The new album ROX!! - I was happy to hear the guys were in the studio again

BTW - Who sings that song on the album? (not Duff of course) (Jeff Rouse?) - that song might be my favorite on the album - (Lori had quite a thing for him - as i heard over endless hous on instant messenger)

Miss you Lori....Hope you are rocking out in heaven ...................................................................

Duff McKagan's Loaded: Off Bass

By Kory Grow

Duff McKagan Originally published in Guitar World, June 2009

Duff McKagen talks to Guitar World about his band's second album, Sick.

Duff McKagan made his name playing bass for Guns N? Roses and Velvet Revolver. But when it comes to being frontman for Loaded, his punk-inspired side project, he?s strictly a six-stringer. Says Duff, ?Singing and playing guitar is way easier than singing and playing bass. I don?t know how Sting does what he does. He?s a freak of nature.?

The Seattle-based group released its debut album, Dark Days, in 2001 but parted ways after McKagan joined Velvet Revolver in 2002. The band reunited in 2008 during Velvet Revolver?s own dark days with former frontman Scott Weiland. Says McKagan, ?When it was getting really dramatic, it was nice for me to step away from it, musically, and just go play with Loaded up in Seattle.? The sessions yielded the Wasted Heart EP in 2008. Now comes Sick (Century Media), Loaded?s second full-length release in eight years. Says McKagan, ?I guess it?s never too late to make that second record.?

McKagan and the band?guitarist Mike Squires, bassist Jeff Rouse and drummer Geoff Reading?decided to write a new album when, at a Christmas benefit gig, they realized how many good unrecorded songs they had. Although McKagan wrote most of the songs on Dark Days, much of Sick was composed by the band or with other writers. One track, the somber ?Mothers Day,? took shape from McKagan and Rouse jamming together on bass guitars. It was called ?Two Basses? until McKagan wrote lyrics about friends he?s lost to drugs.

Surprisingly, although doing time in GN?R and Velvet Revolver cemented his association with Slash, McKagan credits former Gunner Izzy Stradlin as the guitarist that most influenced his own rhythm playing. ?I think from Izzy I learned where a rhythm guitar player should be, within the band,? McKagan says. ?As a result, I don?t overthink it.?

Duff has always had a great sense of humor - always great to hear new tunes are in the works!!

I wish the guys would unearth some old songs off of Episode 99: Live - Sycophant is one of my favorites - Ridin' Home has got rock n' country mixed well

I know they probably don't play them because they were not written by Jeff, Geoff, and Mike - still would be killer to hear at least one

Great news guys!!

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED: Four Special Customized Versions Of 'Sick' To Be Released - Aug. 13, 2009

Cockroach Media, an independent record label specializing in custom vinyl pressings, has teamed up with Zodiac Killer Records to release four special customized versions of "Sick" by DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED on LP in the U.S.

Unlike the U.K. pressing on standard black vinyl, the limited edition U.S. versions will be released on separate custom multicolored records, and be packaged with a bonus 7" single. The bonus disc will include two non-CD tracks, including a rare live acoustic recording of their single "Wasted Heart". This LP will also feature original U.S.-LP-only cover art by Mexican Chocolate Design.

This release was made available late last week through the Cockroach Media and Zodiac Killer Records web sites. "Duff's management sent out e-mails and announcements through their fan clubs and social networking sites late last Wednesday. Within minutes, our site traffic and sales were through the roof. We fully expect this limited pressing to sell out quickly," said Cockroach Media president Jimmy White. White went on to say, "The response was immediate and positive. The remarks on the various forums are extremely positive". The four versions will feature various multicolor combinations of purple, green and black vinyl. Each of these four pressings is extremely limited to 500 pieces or less. The U.S. retail street date for this release has been set for September 15, and will be distributed exclusively through Burnside Distribution in Portland, Oregon.

Loaded's drummer Geoff Reading is stepping down...

Hey everyone,

I am sad to report that, for now, I have to step down as drummer for Duff McKagan's LOADED.

The pressures of being in the "Duff from Guns n' Roses" spotlight, while thrilling, have left me unable to get back to the performer I was pre-cancer, and unable properly provide for my family. This combination has plagued my mental recovery, and I need to take time-now-to focus on these things.

The fellas have hired the great Isaac Carpenter to fill in for the UK tour, with a warm-up show at the Chop-Suey in Seattle on Oct 3. I wouldn't miss this show for anything. Issac is an AMAZING drummer and I, for one, will be right there in front of the stage, with all you Capitol Hill hipsters, arms folded, judging them.

Thank you all for the love and support you've shown me and LOADED.

Cheers,

Geoff

And a little info. on the warm-up show...

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED Drummer Quits; Replacement Announced - Sep. 12, 2009

Drummer Geoff Reading has left DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED, the band led by VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES bassist Duff McKagan. He says in a statement, "The pressures of being in the 'Duff from GUNS N' ROSES' spotlight, while thrilling, have left me unable to get back to the performer I was pre-cancer, and unable properly provide for my family. This combination has plagued my mental recovery, and I need to take time now to focus on these things.

"The fellas have hired the great Isaac Carpenter [LOUDERMILK, GOSLING, OURS, THE EXIES] to fill in for the U.K. tour, with a warm-up show at the Chop Suey in Seattle on October 3. I wouldn't miss this show for anything. Isaac is an AMAZING drummer and I, for one, will be right there in front of the stage, with all you Capitol Hill hipsters, arms folded, judging them.

"Thank you all for the love and support you've shown me and LOADED."

For more information on the new DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED drummer, visit his MySpace page.

"Sick", the new full-length album from DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED, sold around 1,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD landed at position No. 43 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

"Sick" was released in North America on April 7 via Century Media Records. An e-card for the CD, which was produced by Martin Feveyear (PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, KINGS OF LEON), is available at this location.

In addition to McKagan, LOADED features bassist Jeff Rouse (VENDETTA RED, ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE) and guitarist Mike Squires (ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE).

LOADED released "Live Episode" (1999) and "Dark Days" (2001), before other commitments meant LOADED were put on the back burner to some extent, although they never split up.

DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED's five-song EP, "Wasted Heart", was released in September 2008 via Century Media Records.
