Title: A ratings system to evaluate Chinese Democracy:
Post by: jimmythegent on July 26, 2006, 09:36:47 PM
I was bored and devised a way in which we can assess CD in it's current form to fans (as per demos and best live versions) vs. the potential each song has.

Heres what I came up with:

Chinese Democracy (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?8/10
The Blues (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?9/10
Catcher in the Rye (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 7/10
Better (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?7/10
Madagascar (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?5/10
IRS (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 6/10
TWAT (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 6/10
Rhiad (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?5/10
OMG (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 6/10
Silkworms (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 3/10

That comes to a 62% rating in terms of what we have heard thus far.
If we exclude OMG and Silkworms which most likely wont figure on CD we get a 66% rating.
If we also exclude Rhiad (which again may not figure) we get a healthy 69% rating.

More interesting is if we look at what potential we believe each song from what we've heard could have. This, I believe, gives a fairly accurate picture of what we are all in for:

Chinese Democracy (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10/10
The Blues (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10/10
Catcher in the Rye (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?10/10
Better (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 9/10
Madagascar (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?7/10
IRS (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 8/10
TWAT (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 9/10
Rhiad (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?7/10
OMG (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 8/10
Silkworms (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 5/10

Given this, we can say that the potential for these songs is 83%.
Take off OMG and Silkworms and we arrive at 88%
With Rhiad off as well we get 90%.

These songs we have not heard but will likely be on CD,? could have the following potential:

Prostitue? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10/10
Thyme ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?8/10
The General? ? ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 9/10

If we add these to the others then we still arrive at a very promising 90%.

Of course other factors like cohesion, production, order of tracks and overall feel need to be factored to get a clear picture of a great album. But based on this, things are looking fairly hopeful? : ok: Its not an exact science! :hihi:

Id be interested to see how others rate the songs based on these criteria.

Okay, uhm...wow.  First off, let me just say that I appreciate the initiative in doing what you did.  That said, I'm not evaluating anything until I have the finished album in my hand.  Everything else it just too subjective at this point (I'd give "Better" higher than a 7/10, for example).

How can you evaluate songs you've never even heard?

Based on your ratings system I'd give IRS, TWAT, and The Blues at least an 8 maybe a 9, in their current form.  Chinese Democracy and Madagascar, 7's.

But to each his own.

Two things, Id give TWAT a 9/10, the guitar work is unbelievable, and madagascar needs to get rid of the quotes in the middle and replace it with some sick guitar work, or a dizzy solo

I alert you to this part of my post:

I say could have, and rated them highly from a potential standpoint because theyve been talked up alot

yes, as stated I was bored when I devised this.(I work alot with figures in my job as well)

but in seriousness, if it doesnt interest you, dont waste your time responding

instead find a thread that interests you more to post in - perhaps "Axls underpants" or "Finck is greater than Slash" or something

Yeah, I know, what the hell.

You know, potential for any song is limitless - its pointless to start limiting where a song can go. And for fucks sake, you are rating the potential of songs we havent heard/know nothing about?

Better 7/10
Madagascar 7/10
IRS 6/10
TWAT 7/10

3 months ago, the leaked songs would have had a better rating, but they've worn off.

Just out of boredom, I'll also rate the current state of each song:

"Chinese Democracy"--- Haven't heard it, actually. So I can't give it a rating.

"The Blues" ---10/10  (It's already a masterpiece.)

"Better" --- 9/10 (To me, this song is just about perfect. With just a tad of tweaking, it WILL be perfect.)

"Madagascar"--- 9/10  (One of my favorite "new" tracks. And I happen to like the minute or so of movie quotes, especially the MLK part. When the quotes end, and Axl comes back on, it gives me chills every time. Love it, love it, love it.)

"Catcher in the Rye"--- 8/10  (At first it was my favorite of the new tracks, but after listening to it continuosly, I started to get just a little bored with it, which doesn't usually happen with me and GNR songs. It's still an amazing, amazing, amazing song, though. I really hope it's on the album.)

"IRS"--- 7/10  (This one continues to grow on me. I wasn't a huge fan of it at first, but now I love it.)

"TWAT"---  6/10  (I'm nowhere near as in love with this track as many of you others are.)

"Silkworms"--- 6/10 (Ah, the dreaded, hated, heavily chastised "Silkworms." Unlike nearly everybody else in the world, I don't hate this song. I actually . . . like it. And I have from the first time I heard it. The music part of it is really awesome; very different from anything I've heard before. The lyrics aren't that great, though. I think a studio version of the song would actually impress a lot of people.)

"Rhiad"--- 3/10  (Currently, this song sucks, imo. I can't stand it. But I've only heard a live version with very crappy quality, and so I think the song would probably sound very cool if it was cleaned up in a studio.)

Chinese Democracy  (current state) =               6/10
The Blues (current state) =                               6/10 (this song has dropped in quality in my opinion).
Catcher in the Rye (current state) =                 8/10
Better (current state) =                                    8/10
Madagascar (current state) =                           4/10
IRS (current state) =                                         4/10 (BH solo only good thing about this song).
TWAT (current state) =                                      5/10 (highly overrated)

OMG (current state) =                                        2/10 (shit)
Silkworms (current state) =                                2/10

Chinese Democracy (potential) =                        8/10
The Blues (potential) =                                        9/10 (if the album version isn't the newest version)
Catcher in the Rye (potential) =                          10/10 (could possibly end up being CD's best song)

i noticed you did the potential out of Thyme, Prostitute and The General... you only gave one of them 10/10 for potential.

in my opinion, songs weve heard fuck all from, all deserve the 10/10 for potential, as they have yet to be heard. once songs have been heard, thats when you start taking the rating down (if it needs to taken down).

Chinese Democracy (current state) =               8/10
The Blues (current state) =                               9.5/10
Catcher in the Rye (current state) =                  8/10
Better (current state) =                                   9/10
Madagascar (current state) =                           9/10
IRS (current state) =                                        6/10
TWAT (current state) =                                    9/10
Rhiad (current state) =                                     6/10 (only because the recordings arent clear enough)
OMG (current state) =                                      7/10 (i see it as a b-side... unless the re-recorded version is on CD... which would be cool as fuck)
Silkworms (current state) =                              7/10 (i cant wait to hear a studio version... i do honestly love this song.)

Chinese Democracy (potential) =                    9/10
The Blues (potential) =                                    10/10
Catcher in the Rye (potential) =                       10/10
Better (potential) =                                          10/10
Madagascar (potential) =                                 10/10
IRS (potential) =                                              8/10
TWAT (potential) =                                          10/10
Rhiad (potential) =                                           8/10
OMG (potential) =                                            9/10
Silkworms (potential) =                                    9/10 (as a studio song, it would be killer)

Crazy when people start argueing over whether a song should be rated high or low when they don't have a clue what it sounds like.

dude... thats my exact point... im not rating it at all, im just saying something that hasnt at all been heard, should have a 10/10 potential. if you get what i mean. if it was a "current state" rating, it would be 0/10 because it hasnt been heard for people to have an opinion on.

so every unheard song in current state should be 0/10
and every unheard songs potential, should be 10/10

Chinese Democracy

IRS
TWAT

+ 7 more "unknown" songs, but none of the songs you mention.

Chinese Democracy (current state) =               7/10 (improved from 2002, but still rather short and boring.)
The Blues (current state) =                               7.5/10 (dropped from the almost perfect RIR 2001 and 2002 performances.  Richard's riff is gone, and it's kinda wimpy)
Catcher in the Rye (current state) =                  8.5/10 (very strong song)
Better (current state) =                                   9/10 (nice rocker, real 'bipolar'.  could be a huge hit)
Madagascar (current state) =                           7/10 (kinda repetitive, but still a solid song.  nice solo by Rich)
IRS (current state) =                                        6.5/10 (boring aside from Bucket's solo)
TWAT (current state) =                                    9/10 (masterpiece, just a couple sound tweakings are needed)
Rhiad (current state) =                                     6.5/10 (lyrics are shite, but the song's a solid rocker.  especially from the 01/01/01 bootleg)
OMG (current state) =                                      4/10 (good lyrics, everything else sucks)
Silkworms (current state) =                              1/10 (shit.)

Chinese Democracy (potential) =                     9/10 (if the weird intro stays, it could be real cool)
The Blues (potential) =                                    11/10 (if it's the old version.)
Catcher in the Rye (potential) =                       10/10 (cleaned up, obviously.  hopefully a rasp in vocals.  KEEP BRIAN MAY!)
Better (potential) =                                          10/10 (the demo rocks alone rocked)
Madagascar (potential) =                                 10/10 (more lyrics, not gonna happen, but it could be real cool.)
IRS (potential) =                                               7/10 (it'll never be outstanding, in my opinion.  just an average rocker.)
TWAT (potential) =                                          10/10 (cleared up w/o drum loops)
Rhiad (potential) =                                           9/10 (new lyrics needed)
OMG (potential) =                                            8/10 (take out ALL industrialness and the disco beat and it could be a solid rocker)
Silkworms (potential) =                                    1/10 (this song is absolutuly horrible.)

and reviewing tracks that nobody has heard or even know that they even exist is just silly....c'mon now

jeez - it was devised as a way in which people who like this kind of thing can partake if they wish

this thread has really highlighted how narrow minded some have become.

In the initial post I made it abundantly clear that it is not science or exact, its opinion based but for those who like crunching numbers/working out averages (and yes, there are people on these boards who like that type of thing/have a statistical bent!!)

its a bit of fun

and for the umpteenth time, I know I havent heard Prostitute etc.. I made it clear again, that it was only a prediction of potential. Have we heard from sources that it is a big gun? yes. has it been talked about as potentially the best song? yes. all speculation? of course. someone made a good point saying that as far as potential goes, as we havent heard them, they should arguably all be 10/10 as far as potential goes. good point - the only decent point made in reference for those who have critisised. The rest  who chose to critisise missed the point entirely.

Im not saying this is the way music should be judged exclusively etc.. not at all. This is just one way of looking at what we have so far - a different perspective, nothing more, nothing less

Now with those parameters specified, it is very clear what this thread was supposed to be.

Not a foolproof estimation of what CD will be like
Not a statement that all music should be rated in this way exclusively

A bit of fun for those who like this kind of thing

I know it is for fun dude :peace: and i even started typing out my opinions on the songs then stopped and realized it was futile....

I'm just saying it is really biased around here...everything is getting 8, 9 and 10...IMO Better is the best thing we've heard and it gets and 8 or 9 tops...with everything falling below it...and what are we rating in comparison to? the old stuff....everything musical? if so then the ratings fall further...say we take CD and put it up against WTTJ...I'd give WTTJ about an 8...so by that number, where does CD campare...personally I'd say about a 5 or 6..you said 8...bah no way CD is in the same league @ jungle  as to rating a song a 10....never there is no perfect song everything could be improved in hindsight.

as to the potential of prostitute, of course it's 10 out of 10, we haven't heard it it could be the best song ever....of course it could  be a peice of shit too...like you can't honestly justify rating an unheard song cuz there is nothing to base the rating on :-\

Original Poster, your too liberal with your ratings. 10 out of tens are reserved for Sweet Childs, November Rains, etc. Secondly, you assume every song will improve, in some cases dramatically. For a start, CD will stay as it is. It's being played live and has change just very little other than the intro in the last four years. You think there is gonna be a dramatic change in the next month? I would guess all the songs being played live have been finished. They could sound different on the record but CD, the title track is finished. Madagascar, The Blues all those old songs are finished by now, and while they might sound slightly different on the record, I think a jump of 2 points for those songs is a bit much. I think Rhiad and Catcher are two only likely to show dramatic improvements. Maybe TWAT as well, coz Fortus or someone said they didn't want to ruin that song by not playing it right live or something like that. But basically what you have done is put up all songs by two points. Your being overly optimistic, I'm afraid!

Chinese Democracy Current: 6/10, Potential: 6/10
The Blues: Current 7/10, Potential: 8/10 (if he goes back to 2002 way or if it sounds different on record, both unlikely though)
Catcher In The Rye: Current: 8 Potential: 9
Better: Current: 9 Potential :9 (can't see this changing much from the live version)
Madagascar: Current: 9 Potential: 10 (maybe kinda song hard to replicate live, could be better in studio)
IRS: 7/10 Potential: 7/10 (live version is almost certainly the final version)
TWAT: 9/10 Potential: 10/10 (we haven't heard decent live version yet, demo badly mixed, can't wait for studio version)
Rhiad: 2/10 Potential: 7/10 (bootlegs are too poor, potential to be a good rock song)
Oh My God: 3/10 Potential: 3/10 (not gonna be on CD)
Silkworms: 2/10 Potenial 2/10 (not gonna be on CD)

As for your predictions on General, Thyme and Prostitute, that's just lame. We haven't heard anything about these songs, other than Richard Fortus likes the General and maybe a couple of those songs Buckmeister talked about.

And I'm delighted with your genius comment that its not an exact science. The most sense of the whole post.

I was bored and devised a way in which we can assess CD in it's current form to fans (as per demos and best live versions) vs. the potential each song has.

Heres what I came up with:

Chinese Democracy (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?8/10
The Blues (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?9/10
Catcher in the Rye (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 7/10
Better (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?7/10
Madagascar (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?5/10
IRS (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 6/10
TWAT (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 6/10
Rhiad (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?5/10
OMG (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 6/10
Silkworms (current state) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 3/10

That comes to a 62% rating in terms of what we have heard thus far.
If we exclude OMG and Silkworms which most likely wont figure on CD we get a 66% rating.
If we also exclude Rhiad (which again may not figure) we get a healthy 69% rating.

More interesting is if we look at what potential we believe each song from what we've heard could have. This, I believe, gives a fairly accurate picture of what we are all in for:

Chinese Democracy (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10/10
The Blues (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10/10
Catcher in the Rye (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?10/10
Better (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 9/10
Madagascar (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?7/10
IRS (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 8/10
TWAT (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 9/10
Rhiad (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?7/10
OMG (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 8/10
Silkworms (potential) =? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 5/10

Given this, we can say that the potential for these songs is 83%.
Take off OMG and Silkworms and we arrive at 88%
With Rhiad off as well we get 90%.

These songs we have not heard but will likely be on CD,? could have the following potential:

Prostitue? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10/10
Thyme ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?8/10
The General? ? ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 9/10

If we add these to the others then we still arrive at a very promising 90%.

Of course other factors like cohesion, production, order of tracks and overall feel need to be factored to get a clear picture of a great album. But based on this, things are looking fairly hopeful? : ok: Its not an exact science! :hihi:

Id be interested to see how others rate the songs based on these criteria.

I know you explained everyhing already..but this is the DEFINITION of wasted time  ! can't believe this !
"The General" might be a 7,4 or 7,52 though...

Ehh, what the hell.  I'll do this.  But I won't bother with songs we've never heard, nor with potential.  That's silly talk, let's just stick with what we know.  Also gonna change the rating scale to out of 100 because I think it give more room for different scores.

I'll start off by saying that I think CITR and Better are the best tunes.  I give them an 88.  Everything else is relative.  Why only an 88 and not 100?  Because I don't want to be too liberal with good marks, and you have to leave room for the really truly special songs to get 90s and 100.

Chinese Democracy  (current state) =               65/100
The Blues (current state) =                               82/100
Catcher in the Rye (current state) =                  88/100
Better (current state) =                                   88/100
Madagascar (current state) =                           73/100
IRS (current state) =                                        77/100
TWAT (current state) =                                    82/100
Rhiad (current state) =                                     55/100
OMG (current state) =                                      60/100
Silkworms (current state) =                              40/100

Yeah, that's about right.  Overall it gets a 71%.  Take away Silkworms and it's 74.44%.  Also take away OMG and Rhiad and it's 79.28%.

I guess songs like I.R.S. and Chi Dem get compared to rockers from the past like Nightrain and Brownstone.  They are a bit lacking in comparison.  So their scores are a bit low.  I'd say Better, CITR, and The Blues stacks up well against what the old band did, so their scores show that.  TWAT too...it took time to grow on me but I think it's an amazing song.

I don't know about that but I read an article that he and Jimmy Iovine stayed up all night before the deadline finishing the mix.
