Great surprise, but below par performance by Axl.  Anything live from 2006 blows the 02 VMA's away.

I think your right about the memorable part...for us GnR fans anyway. To everyone else, it was Axl Rose with a guy wearing a bucket on his head, and a few other nobodys playing songs they kinda remember. I will always remember that night, to me it was the night GnR stepped BACK into the spotlight, however good or bad it was.

Whenever I show free falling to people I know they all look horrified as soon as Axl starts his wailing, and they are GnR fans, I don't mind it but it does seem kind of humorous.

False by far.......simply put, Neil Young and Eddie Vedder doing "Keep On Rocking In The Free World" was the greatest MTV Awards live performance.

False, I really almost cried after I saw it.

I think even Axl would agree.

But he sounds so much better now, so much like his younger self that I really just try to block 2002 out of my mind entirely.

As far VMA performances, I really prefer GNR/Elton John 1992 November Rain.  That would be my fav.  I haven't watched the 2002 performance since it aired on TV.

easy answer: FALSE.

It was, using someone else's words, a "catastrophe."
