LONG LIVE 80's METAL!!

« on: December 21, 2006, 09:34:34 AM »

I am looking for some new metal bands that are either on the verge of making  it big or are real huge in your country. I know there are alot of people from Europe on here and The music coming out of Europe is awesome right now. So what do you all suggest I should check out.

I grew up on the 80's metal (which I still love) and my favorite band right now is Vains of Jenna.

Man, sorry to say but that was quite an uninspired effort. Nothing wrong with being stuck in the past imo, but it would help if the music had a point, a hook, or _something_... Dunno, maybe glam's just not my thing, though I do dig Hanoi Rocks.

i enjoy that song very much, and the lyrics do have meaning.

from listening to the lyrics i can take them my own way, or being a fan i know what they actually are about and they do mean something.

And like you said, glam isnt your thing, it takes someone to be into the music to really understand how cool the song is.

hanoi are a great band who had the glam image, but their music is nothing like it...its just something else haha, spaced out punk rock cross over insanity.

-----------------add on-----------------

also i he said he liked vains of jenna, who to me are my least favourite band out of the new bands from sweden at the moment, yet they get the most media attention, takes the piss.

also zman check out buckcherry if you already havent

The Sword-in the vein of Sabbath, very cool stuff
Trivium- early Metallica sounding, politically charged (in a good way)
Mastadon-very heavy progressive metal

MRlee thanks for the link the song is pretty good. I will have to go buy the album and check them out.

I guess what i am looking for is some real bad ass metal bands. I live in California and the metal scene really suxs hear. I grew up in the 80's so i like all that shit. You know Metallica, Megadeth,Preist, Kiss, Bon Jovi etc.... I think you all get the picture.

I am into alot of Swedish metal bands right now.

What i am looking for is more up and coming metal acts that you all like to listen too.

I did just by Buckcherry and they kick ass.

I bought Trivium and they are starting to grow on me.

Keep the suggestions coming.

You clearly enjoy thrash metal, so I'll recommend the Unholy 4 of German thrash metal, which are basically the more evil counterparts of American thrash. Wink Check out Kreator, Destruction, Sodom, and Tankard. German thrash metal was highly influential in the development of death metal, and even black metal, especially Sodom's very early material.

I am into alot of Swedish metal bands right now.

Melodic death metal is huge in Scandinavia now. Check out bands like Opeth, Skyfire, and At The Gates to get into that scene a little. The American band Agalloch is also similar, at least to the acoustic moments in these bands. Then there's the more baroque stuff, like Ulver and Arcturus. From there, you might want to get into orthodox black metal, like Burzum and Graveland, but it takes a while to get into that. Bathory would be a good start, since they more or less created black metal in the 80's. Venom is just an evil Motorhead clone. Wink

Trivium is lame. If you think they're good, you're really missing out on some amazing music.

i disagree new trivium is great.

I cant see how hes missing out on great music when half the styles and bands you mentioned roar every word, if you can make out what your saying then you deserve a medal.

Every timr i go to the record store I always see Tankard and have been reluctant to buy and of course you ask the emplyee about the group they have no idea. SO I think i might check them out. I have a couple of albums (yes records) of Sodom's early stuff.

I just got done reading Lords of Chaos and went out and bought some Burzum which is not to bad and i also did by Bathory Blood Fire Death I love the music but some and the vocals kind of grow on you. I love to play Bathory and Burzum at work it pisses alot of people off it is great.

I completly forgot about Venom. I will check out Ulver and Arcturus.

ALl of these suggestions are great.

I will check out Ulver and Arcturus.

Well done! From Arcturus I'd recommend first checking out Aspera Hiems Symfonia, and if you like that one, move on to La Masquerade Infernale. As for Ulver, I'd go for Bergtatt, and maybe even Kveldssanger if you get into the folk aspect (though I must warn that album isn't metal at all) Smiley

Bathory and Burzum went through HUGE transformations in their careers. I recommend staying away from every Burzum album after Filosofem. As for Bathory, they went into folk metal after Blood Fire Death. In fact, Hammerheart is my favorite Bathory album. As for Lords of Chaos, Varg claims that it's biased, but he's a Nazi, murderer, in prison, a pagan fanatic, and generally insane, so it's safe to ignore him these days.  hihi

Have you listened to Death? It's not typical death metal, but it's great.
