That award was awarded February 2009. It therefore depends on whether you regard Platinum, within two-three months of release, as a comparative success/failure. I personally believe Chinese Democracy sold mediocre and see no reason to alter my belief. Black Ice for instance was certified 2x Platinum during a similar span of time.


Great for Black Ice!  How many albums had gone 2x platinum during that time?  Not many at all.  Just because Black Ice sold better doesn't make Chinese a "failure"...which is a term you and others have used.  "Huge flop" was another saying.

Chinese Democracy was the 14th best-selling album of 2008 worldwide. The only hard rock/metal bands placed above GN'R were AC/DC and Metallica. I think it performed well. The expectations were probably unreasonably high.
