How does these things work.

Album goes gold or platinum (didnt chinese go platinum already  in 2009?)

Does the band decide on how many platinum records they will be given, lets say axl ordered ten of them.

Or do they get one per member of the band who recorded on the album.

Or do they get one platinum record per one millon sales?

Jarmo explained this earlier in the thread:

"The RIAA certifies the album so the artist can get the gold, or in this case, platinum award. Then it's up to the artist, management and/or record company to get the awards done. It's up to them to decide who they want to give them to."

Also, from the RIAA site--

RIAA certification entitles the authorized record company/music label to purchase official RIAA award plaques bearing the trademarked RIAA hologram seal from licensed plaque manufacturers.

Also:

The plaques themselves contain various items under the glass. Modern awards often use CDs instead of records. Most gold and platinum records are actually vinyl records which have been vacuum metallized and tinted, while trimmed and plated metal "masters", "mothers", or "stampers" (metal parts used for pressing records out of vinyl) were initially used. Rarely does the groove on the record match the actual recording being awarded. Individual plaque-makers produced their awards according to available materials and techniques employed by their graphic arts departments. The plaques, depending on size and elaborateness of design, cost anywhere between US$135 and $275, most often ordered and purchased by the record label that issued the original recording.

It says: Presented to (name) to commemorate RIAA certified platinum sales of more than 1,000,000 copies of the Geffen Records album "Chinese Democracy"
