How can AC/DC and Zepplin be under-rated? They're both considered two of the best rock bands ever!?!

Please explain?

No. Never will either of those bands be considered underrated.

Izzy man, ACDC average?!?!? I saw them play in front of 450,000 people and blow the Rolling Stones away.

Ack, I see you have the Rolling Stones there too,  >:( .... Both bands can fuckin pump out kick ass tunes.  I didn't know it was possible to not like Ac/Dc, unless the "similarity" in their songs bothers you.

Blah, I like all of the bands you listed, if I HAD to pick, I guess I'd say Metallica.  :-\

I dont think any of those bands are overrated. I might not like some of them but i cant argue with any of there influences on music history.

It has simply gotta be Nirvana - no contest.

I'm baffled too. Maybe some people feel that the full range of their talents were never appreciated by the general public (i.e. they were thought of as nothing more than purveyors of 3-cord, knuckle dragging, headbanging fodder, when (in the case of Zep anyway) there was mauch more to their repertoire).

i dont believe their talents have been fully appreciated by the average person...I think that AC and Zep are among the greatest rock bands since the dawn of time...sure they are appreciated to the highest degree with people who love rock music but not generally...you can either be narrow minded and think that the world revolves around rock music (which it doesnt) or think that rock music is generally under appreciated (which it is)...and if you ask the average person on the street, it is not likely they will answer ACDC or Zeppelin if they are asked who is the greatest rock band?, and even less so if asked who is the greatest band?.  Most unbiased polls on the general public wouldnt put zeppelin in the top 10 never mind the top 3 which is where i believe they should be. Thats why i believe they are underrated.

Well, I think that Ozzy Osbourne might be a little overrated (he's got a lot of tunes that are kind of filler, and his stage presence as a member of Black Sabbath was statue-esque at best).  But Aerosmith, although they're a good band overall, has had way too much filler on their later albums, and their power ballads are getting more formulaic all the time...coughflyawayfromherecough.

Nirvana are the most overated ever.

i dont think zep and dc can possibly be underated, Zep ecspecially.

if you go to forums of other groups and make accusations, then the fans will be defensive or retaliatory...

yea led zep could be accused of plagiarism but the bits they took from other songs in most cases doesnt resemble the original, i have heard styles of little richard, cochran and elvis in their work but most cannot hear the resemblances unless you know the tracks they resemble...early blues artists often took parts of songs from other blues artists, it was a common thing...and thats where their influences lie so why criticise them for following their influences...you will find that some of the songs zep supposedly plagiarised had already been plagiarised...jmho

Personally, I think Nirvana, Led Zepplen, and Pink Floyd are overrated. The one guy/band that's underrated is Alice Cooper. He's the guy who created shock rock but he never gets the credit for it.

no offence dude but one single forum doesnt equal the whole fan community...im a fan as well as others here but do you see me or anyone else tearing you apart? sure they arent beyond criticism, every band and artist has their faults...

sure they stole things here and there...but the songs they stole them from werent exactly popular, old blues songs and obscure songs...they revitalised interest in the blues...i think it gives them some hooks to the past and their influences...and you can feel that in their music

btw your link goes to a page with nothing on it

For some reason you have to highlight it, here is the piece.

Quote
Stolen Tunes
One of the things Led Zeppelin regularly become accused of is 'nicking' bits of old blues numbers. And it is true, to a certain extent. The spice to the story is that for years the issues of 'what where the original versions?' and, especially where credit and songwriting royalties were concerned 'who were the original writers?' became obsessively researched topics for many a music journalist and fan alike. Later spilling over into the law courts as claims and counter claims were made. A problem in particular for Led Zeppelin was that during the 60's so many artists had recorded versions of old blues songs and re-credited the original compositions to themselves and made money out of it that for Led Zeppelin to continue the practice into the 1970's and be even more successful was pouring oil onto troubled waters. Their high visibility made them stand out as targets for claimants.

Here are just a few of the most well-known 'musical thefts'!:

'Black Waterside' by Bert Jansch is the main guitar element of 'Black Mountain Side,' 'When the Levee Breaks' was originally written by a bizarre skiffle duo, Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe. 'She Moved Thru' the Bizarre' by Davey Graham is the basis of Jimmy's solo 'White Summer.'

'Shake 'Em On Down' by Bukka White was raided twice by Zep, firstly on 'Hats Off to (Roy) Harper' and then on 'Custard Pie' which have very similar lyrical content anyway! 'How Many More Years' by Howlin' Wolf seems to have combined with a little bit of riffage from Albert King's 'The Hunter' to form the classic Zeppelin tune, 'How Many More Times'.

'You Need Love' was a song written by bluesman Willie Dixon for Muddy Waters, which found it's way into the lyrics of 'Whole Lotta Love' and was contested by Dixon. Musically, it's an original Led Zeppelin creation. Although, the riff seems to mildly resemble that of 'Drugstore Woman' by John Lee Hooker! 'I Can't Quit You Baby' was written by Willie Dixon and was credited correctly on the album, Led Zeppelin I.

'Bring It On Home' was originally written by Willie Dixon, once again, but it's really the version by Sonny Boy Williamson's version that bears most resemblance to LZ's recording. 'Travelling Riverside Blues' is lyrically Robert Johnson's and musically Johnny Winter's 'Leavin' Blues'. 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' is a song written by Blind Willie Johnson, which bears a strong resemblance to the song of the same title which was credited to Zep. Plant acknowledged that the song was based on that of "another written a long time previously."

'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You', was originally written by Annie Briggs nee Briddon who Pagey had seen and heard during the mid 60's. The well known recorded version of the song was by Joan Baez. 'Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed' is one of the well known lines of 'In My Time of Dying'. Maybe that's because it was the title of a song written by Blind Willie Johnson. The Zep tune bears resemblance to this, but a subsequent version in the 1930's by Josh White has been named by Page as having been also heard.

'The Girl I Love, She Got Long Curly Hair' was written by 'Sleepy' John Estes in the 1920's, and was raided by Zeppelin twice, in 'The Girl I Love' on the BBC Sessions, and really as the riff to Bonham's drum solo 'Moby Dick'. 'Killing Floor' by Howlin' Wolf was the origin of Zep's 'Lemon Song'. It is supposed that the Lemon title came from a Robert Johnson song referring to "squeeze my lemon," although Johnson was not the only one to use the allegory. The publishers for Howlin' Wolf challenged through the courts in the early 70's and a settlement was reached.

'Ooh My Head' by Ritchie Valens, resembles Zep's 'Boogie With Stu'. It's prime 50's rock 'n' roll influences also included 'Ooh My Soul' by Little Richard. 'You Shook Me' was written by Willie Dixon for Muddy Waters, and was correctly credited on Led Zeppelin I. In the same year of release, 1968, the Jeff Beck group also released a similar version of this track, and so Dixon did not challenge the band because of having to launch a duel assault on both groups!

True, i can't speak for the whole fan base, but there is a certain attitude amongst there fanbase i've met where they go nuts if you remotally offer any critisism.

Ironically i quite like zep in there less-indulgent phrases.
But i hate the lyrics and dont like 30mins drum solos and screeching vocals.

The world has gone mad.

If you think Zep, The Stones, Acca Dacca, Aerosmith, The Beatles and Sabbath are overrated, then maybe you don't actually listen to ROCK music, and maybe you all listen to N*Sync and Busted?  Even if you did, the Beatles are probably the only reason they are around.

I bet all of you who claimed those bands are overrated never actually *listened* to a whole albums worth of material, and I don't mean pick the worst album of their career like when Perry left Aero, or when Houses Of The Holy happened, or when Ozzy left Sabbath.

[NirvanaRanting]
In my opinion, Nirvana aren't overrated as such, I just think they suck.  People believe in all the "fuck the mainstream" stuff about Shitvana, and how Kurt hated MTV...well, why make videos? Hello, MTV unplugged? Um....what happened to his ethics then? Oh I know a good way of getting out of stuff I don't like...I'll kill myself
Yeah...good one.

Even better!
Way to go Kurt! You rock!  I  Kurt.

Yeah, they changed the music industry, yeah they influenced millions of kids...but they suck.

Plus they totally ripped off the Pixies who are just infinitely better anyway.

The word over rated was designed for Pink Floyd, i was just listening to 'Dark side of the moon' just doesn't do anything for me, a very modern sound i will agree but can't see anything remarkable about them, too many 'odd noises' as well.

All the bands on that poll get roughly the correct amount of recognition and respect that they deserve in my opinion. With one obvious exception; Nirvana. An important band in that they did a part to change rock music; but they do absolutly nothing for me. It really pisses me off when people claim nirvana as one of the greatest bands ever, and that they constantly have to win all these polls in Q and Rolling Stone simply because people feel obliged to vote for them even though they dont know why (i was especially pissed at the RS poll that didnt have slash, but had kurt at #14.)

Nirvana, ahem.

Well...I don't hate them. However the thing is, "In Utero" is great. Yet so is "Vibrate You", but I don't see King Adora winning any polls?

Nirvana were the right band, in the right place, at the right time. And nothing more.

Do you know what word I associate with Nirvana's music? "Catchy". A lot of it is throwaway stuff. Nice shit to sing along to, yet dosn't have too much of an impact on you.
However, "In Utero" could be the exception there...

That sentence doesn't make sense.

If you ARE trying to say "why do people remember them for their old stuff?" then you clearly need to seek medical attention. I don't see how they are overated in any way because their first 3 albums (let-alone AJFA and Black) seemingly crush most other bands efforts.

Nirvana are definately overated as are the Beatles. Also, from what I have heard from AC/DC, they are overated aswell.

I'm hesitant to jump on the trend and bash Metallica like everyone else. They were metal's heroes in the 80's! I wouldn't say they are Zeppelin caliber, but their old stuff is definitely not overrated! Hell, ...And Justice for All isn't given enough credit!  Their 90's stuff onward is the overrated crap, but nothing can take away from what they did in the 80's.

In my opinion, the Rolling Stones are hideously overrated. They somehow get thrown in the same league as the Beatles (also overrated, but not as highly as the Stones). The Rolling Stones were nothing special at all! They had 2 or 3 good songs and the rest was filler. Same thing with the Who, also very useless.

Exactly. People make out that Load/Re-Load/St Anger killed Metallica but what's important is how good their first 4/5 albums were, especially as Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets were as popular as they were (and are) through word-of-mouth.

With the power of my mind I will deliver a list in order of most overratedness, with No.1 being the most overrated:

12.  Led Zeppelin
11.  Black Sabbath
10.  Metallica
9.  Aerosmith
8.  Pearl Jam
7.  The Rolling Stones
6.  Van Halen
5.  Def Leppard
4.  AC/DC
3.  The Beatles
2.  Ozzy Osbourne
1.  Nirvana

I'm only counting numbers 12-8 in this list because they're in the starting list, as none of these bands are overrated.  Numbers 7-1 are all definately overrated bands.  Nirvana were such a bollocks band.  I'll credit them for having a few good tunes, but they're so blatantly not the best band of the last 'any' years it makes me want to scream!  They were probably not even in the top 10 bands of the nineties.  They top this list by a country mile.

Ozzy is a sell-out now and he was nothing special after he left Sabbath.  He's always been carried by talented guitarists, from Iommi, through Rhoades to Wylde.  Vastly overrated and has become nothing more than sharon's corporate gimmick.

The Beatles were good, very good, but not as uber-talented as they're built up to be.

AC/DC - a good band no doubt, but not the kings of rock or anything.

Def Leppard - not done anything seriously good sinch Hsteria.  I have X... sounds like a boy band except they play their own instruments.

Van Halen, just sound so cheesy at times.  I list them this highly as a matter of taste if not that they're almost as much of a pop band as rockers.

Roling Stones - take away the swagger and what's left??  Never heard any outstanding MUSIC from them, which is surprising considering how much loved they are.

Thanks for reading - hopefully at least one person here agrees with me!!  If not, I don't care.  I'm right.

The word 'sellout' was created to be tagged on to Ozzy Osbourne.
Prince of Darkness my ass, would the devil be advertising Children In Need? No offense to CIN, but come on, he doesn't even try.

The Osbournes is a fucking joke, all they do is make a fucking home-video and get a big, fat  fucking pay cheque from those bastards MTV.

I don't mean to include Metallica in all of my posts but I really don't know how people say they 'soldout' when the so-called 'king of metal' or whatever is selling quicker than the Guns N Roses concert at Madison Square Garden.

I think def leppard are fucking terrible. I know some people dig em but I don't get it so I'm gonna say they're over rated. I mean the only thing they ever did that I find listenable is "pour some sugar on me" and I take it with the same attitude I take a weird al song because it is so ridiculous. I think Van Halen are over rated too. Mostly because of eddie. I don't think their music was as innovative as alot of people think. Diamond Dave was cool and I like his voice still but Eddie to me, while a great player, never felt like his playing was distinctive. His solos and guitar lines always sound impersonal to me.
While I am not the biggest Beatles fan I am a fan of their latter work and I think one thing you have to consider when saying they or the stones are over rated is that without them odds are we wouldn't have alot of these other bands that are listed. In alot of ways they started it all so I think that is something to be considered before labeling them "over rated".

Do you know what word I associate with Nirvana's music? "Catchy". A lot of it is throwaway stuff. Nice shit to sing along to, yet dosn't have too much of an impact on you.
However, "In Utero" could be the exception there...

So "catchy" is a drawback from a band now?

It's not the easiest thing in the world to write a song as catchy as some of Nirvana's tunes.  Not to mention that their songs are also more "rock" than most bands.  A song having an "impact" on someone doesn't necessarily mean they have to break down into tears every time they hear it.  :o

Nirvana, without a doubt is the most overrated.  I like some of their stuff, but they don't deserve to be even mentioned in the same post as The Beatles or Led Zep.  They aren't that good.  It's amazing how a band can go from being halfway decent to the most amazing band ever simply by having the lead singer put a gun to his head and pulling the trigger.

Hey, maybe Kid Rock will improve his music by doing that.

I have to say my choice is Kiss - i just really don't get them. ?When your young you think ah they look like they could be cool (going by the pics of them). ?

Then when you actually listen to them, it's just slushy pop sprayed sliver and covered in flames lol. Via their merchandise, they think they are star trek or something. con-mercial is the fucking word for them heh I even saw Kiss coffins the other day!?

Sorry i know they have alot of dedicated followers but i have tried and just dont get them.

I agree with this.  I used to be a HUGE Kiss fan - until it finally dawned on me that they are just about the money and nothing more.  It took me a while to come to this revelation, I'll admit, because I had the rose colored glasses and Kiss could do no wrong.  But when they dumped Kulick and Singer to reband the original line up (which, I admit I did like better) it proved to me that they were all about money and didn't care about anything else.  Ugh... now I need to go take another shower, just talking about Kiss makes me feel all slimy.

Definitely RHCP for me also.

I will say though that although I love Nirvana, the media is responsible for over hyping them. Nirvana did not invent Grunge. Soundgarden, Mudhoney, hell I wont list them all but there were many "Grunge" bands around before Nirvana debuted with Bleach. How the hell Rolling Stone could rate Kurt as the #5 guitarist of all time just boggles my mind. If anything, knowing now what Dave Grohl is capable of doing musically, Nirvana should have been much better than it was.

I'm not going to try to tell you that your opinion is wrong, like some people might around here; I'll just disagree about DMB being unoriginal. A 5 man band consisting of an acoustic guitar, electric bass, drums, violinist and saxophone isnt exactly your run of the mill band.  :peace:

Wouldn't Nirvana's impact on "the scene" match the post starters original statement as to the definition of overrated used in this instance...glam rock hair bands all but lost their call backs from record companies when nevermind came out...and while their was a definite plateau wit that sort of music, they did open up door for a lot of bands to gain a larger audience...

As far as who's overrated? I don't know I barely listen to corporate radio anymore...

Izzy I gotta disagree

John Frusciante is one of the best guitar players alive today and no one can match Flea on bass, Chad Smith is an excellent drummer, Anthony is a good lyricist, not the greatest vocalist but I love them and think they are unique and great.

By The Way alone went platinum in over 35 countries, that's pretty impressive, they have radio friendly songs that arent technically radio friendly

Just look at some of their past hits

"Otherside" wasnt a poppy radio friendly track but yet it dominated radio,Zephyr Song was very very left of right.

We will agree to disagree on them though.

I just never saw the fascination in Led Zepplin, Stairway is epic and great but their rock songs are just not what id call the greatest of all time and Robert Plant is the most annoying frontman ever to pick up a mic in my opinion.

As for overated bands...jeez the list is endless it's hard to pick just one...there's Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Radiohead....guess the worst of them all is that Crazy Frog if he counts...he's on course for a UK No.1 so quite a few people must rate him...and since i think he's shite i'd say he's overated by a long way more so than all the bands i've listed.

Nirvana is definitely an extremely overrated band.  Kurt Cobain was a bad singer and a sub-par guitarist.  I find their songs extremely boring.  If Kurt Cobain didn't kill himself they wouldn't be nearly as revered as they are now.  They receive far too much credit.  Not that I'm a big fan of either, but Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains were far superior grunge bands that don't get nearly as much credit as Nirvana.

Out of that list:

Nirvana/Pearl Jam.

Nirvana's first album ("Bleach") was a kick ass rock album that I still listen to today.  Other than that they managed to shell out a decent song here and there but that definitely doesn't justify the million plus nuthuggers who paint them as one of the greatest.  And Kurt Cobain had no business chastising GN'R saying their music was crap (jealousy does some weird things to people).  His hatred for Axl got the better of him there.

As far as Pearl Jam goes - fuck!!  Eddie Vedder (spelling?) has gotta be the biggest shit-stain to ever attempt to portray an awesome frontman.  As far as I'm concerned them and Nirvana were in a battle to see who sucked more.  Who won?

well, it's how you look it. RHPC and Nirvana would not have made that kind of fuzz with out having those great songs. Then again, if we look your way Colplay could be overrated, because it hasn't really more than one great song and a couple of good songs.

I still stick to Poison. it's dirt, smelly and hairy and I don't like. still it succeed big time and seems to get credit and recognition after all these years.

Definatly Nirvana.

And I agree that U2 are HUGELY overrated. I do like U2 but they arent nearly as good as they think they are. The Edge is shite. How is he one of the best guitarists ever? In the U.K Hall Of Fame last year 5 artists were automatically put in and others had to be voted in. The five artists that were deemed so good that they couldn't NOT be in there were Elvis (obviously because of importance to music), The Beatles (see Elvis), Madonna (obviously they had to put a woman in it), Bob Marley (mmm. That one was abit strange) and U2. I can't think why. Zeppelin didn't get in. Neither did Elton John. Or The Who. Queen had to be voted in. As did the Stones. And U2 were just let in. Bono must have struck a deal with someone.

Out of that list i'd say take your pick out of Van Halen, Nirvana, or Def Leppard.  Van Halen's lyrics never really did anything for me while musically they're pretty damn good.  Def Leppard is similar to VH because I find they're lyrics to be simple but their sound is awesome (it's also bullshit how the commercial for their new cd proclaims them the "originators of modern rock" or something to that effect).  As for Nirvana, not to sound like a morbid asshole, but Kurt Cobain probably made his best career move when he offed himself because had he not done that, there's no way Nirvana would have reached the legendary status they have today.

Nirvana crushed hair bands, I mean think about that, Nirvana crushed the hair bands and ushered in a new wave of music, how many times has a musical revolution like that happened? just a few im sure.

Oasis outside of Champagne Supernova have never appealed to me, granted I havent heard a shitload of their songs so Im probably missing out on them and radiohead, I do dig Creep by radiohead

i downloaded a few Radiohead songs a while back though and never could really get into them.

Cobain didn't single handedly crush hair bands.  GN'R had already changed the scene when they came in.  Most of the hair bands at least tried to become more agrressive and less poppy after Guns hit the scene.  Once again Cobain gets too much credit.  What crushed hair metal was that it became way too over exposed and formulaic.  People got tired of it, and it began to become stale.  The good bands from that era (Motley Crue, Poison, Tesla, L.A. Guns, Def Leppard, and some others) live on, and the Autographs and Dangerous Toyz were never heard from again.

actually Bon Jovi were really the only band that truly survived. Motley have now but they were gone in the 90's. Bon Jovi were successful through it all.

hey guys I started this THREAD why, my name is not First?

I STARTED THIS THREAD MMMM
Actually estranged88 started pretty much the same thread on 24 October 2003 so he beat you to it by way over a year dude, and i'm guessing one of the mods or jarmo thought rather than have several threads on the same subject lying around why not put them together...saves people repeating their views in thread after thread....does it bother you that much that your name is not first?

It doesnt bother me at all man... I just thought.. there wasnt a thread like this before... Its a mistake o' mine

I know everybody has their own opinion but I have got to say that The Beatles are the greatest band of all time. Their later material (i.e. The White Album, Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's, pretty much everything from Rubber Soul on) is absolutely mind-blowing (the older stuff is pretty good too) and it's effects are still in music today. Those albums are the ones that created popular music and it sounded so different from everything at that time.
If it wasn't for The Beatles, a lot of the bands out there today would not be around (For example, Ozzy's a huge Beatles fan and his favorite song is A Day In The Life)

most of the bands on the list have earned there keep, since there are so many bands, and so few good ones that can pass the test of time , i dont think any of these bands deserve to be considered overrated, however i think AUDIOSLAVE would be good place to start for most overrated

Poison still plays arenas and ampitheaters, so I'd say they survived.  I guess Crue didn't survive, but they've been resurected.  However, I think if they stayed together and didn't try to go industrial with the Generation Swine album they would've stayed pretty big like Bon Jovi.  Even their tour for New Tatoo, which Tommy Lee didn't participate in was pretty big back in 2000.  But yeah, Jovi definitely did the best job of surviving, and I think its because they basically stuck to their guns.  So many hair metal bands tried to become either grunge or industrial during the 90's and fell flat on there faces.  Bands like Poison and Bon Jovi stuck to their guns and retained a pretty loyal fan base over the years.

D... you are giving Kurt and Nirvana WAYYYYYYY too much credit (hense, the title of this thread is very appropriate when speaking in terms of Nirvana.)

Nirvana did NOT kill hair bands... they were pretty much destroyed when GnR hit the scene and made it ok for rock to be nasty again.? Before GnR... thanks to Bon Jovi and the other hair bands, the hard rock sound had become too mainstream and too nice.

What Nirvana (along with others -- Pearl Jam & Alice in Chains come to mind) did do, is usher in a new style of music.? They helped create the grunge sound -- the angst ridden sound that reminded us that life sucks -- which was just as effectively killed when Kurt killed himself (or someone killed him).? ?Grunge was probably the shortest lived musical style in history... I think that Disco even lived a longer life than did grunge.

However, that is nothing exceptional.? It's no more amazing than when Punk Rock stamped out the disco flames in the late 70s.? ?

It happens all the time... something comes along to kick mainstream music in it's collective ass and all the sudden the musical tide changes.? And it has just as much to do with who is listening to the music as it does to who is creating it... because as the current mainstream generation gets older, they get replaced by a younger crowd who have different musical preferences.

When people look back on Rock history in 50yrs the gimmick of Def Leppard having a drummer with 1 arm will sound pathetic.

Wait it already does, hysteria is a decent album but i'm pretty sure less than 5% of all albums are anyway.

I'm not a huge Def Leppard fan, but I think you're being unfair.

You should give some examples of how it's a gimmick. The guy can't help it if he lost his arm in a car accident. He's just playing the cards he was dealt. By the way, he was an awesome drummer before. Like -Jack-  said, go listen to their early stuff.

Def Leppard overrated? Does anyone even hold them in any high esteem at all these days? They're largely considered a joke. Ditto for Van Halen. Only '80s rock fans really listen to them a lot. Van Halen still gets airplay but they're not really considered as great as The Beatles or Nirvana.

I'd say Nirvana are most overrated closely followed by Metallica. But at least Nirvana had a cultural impact and I can understand their relevance at the time; Metallica are just complete shit IMO and did nothing that wasn't already being done. Boring music and terrible lyrics. The only song I like that they've done is "Enter Sandman" and also "I Disappear" which incidentally enough most Metallica fans hate because it was done for "M:I-2" and is considered to be from their "sell-out" phase. Whatever - I think it kicks ass.

If the dude with 1 arm wasn't a dude with 1 arm, what unique thing would their be about them

80s to Mid 90s Metallica had an impact almost half of rock, Metallica represent people views on Heavy Metal, dudes with long hair, leather jackets, that sort of thing, since lots of people don't want to remember the 70s.

Based on their efforts of the last 25 years or so, The Rolling Stones are way overrated. They have only released 3 decent studio albums in 25 years or so (Tattoo You, Steel Wheels, Bridges of Babylon) but everytime they go on tour it is treated as the second coming of Christ.

In the 60's and 70's they were easily one of the best but now its just a bunch of hype and overpriced shows.

hey RussianRoulette, your the man and i respect you but...

i respectfully disagree about Metallica. Their 80's stuff is some of the greatest music i have ever heard.

so the lyrics are simplistic sometimes so what? they get the point across and dealt with mature topics that most thrash metal bands at the time didn't deal with.

i also? feel that the music is incredibly melodic and intricate. also, if u think about some of their records were loose concept albums:

Master of Puppets- methods of control
Ride the Lightning- different ways of dying
...And Justice For All- The abuse and corruption in our justice system.

...And Justice For All- The abuse and corruption in our justice system.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply dude - I have listened to a lot of Metallica's stuff and for whatever reason it just doesn't really do it for me. I appreciate what you wrote but I don't think it will really improve my opinion of them. Compared to most of the stuff I listen to, Guns N' Roses is one of the harder bands. I also don't care a whole lot for NIN and a lot of people here seem to worship them. I did like their last album actually, but I bought Downward Spiral and didn't care for it at all, but anyway...

Metallica are just complete shit IMO and did nothing that wasn't already being done. Boring music and terrible lyrics. T
Quote

You can think their music is boring, but terrible lyrics?? Have you ever read the lyrics to Disposable Heroes, One, Master of Puppets or Fade to Black?

Yeah, their lyrics annoy me.

I find them juvenile and simplistic. It's because I don't like that genre very much.

Quote
Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Not my cup of tea.

What a 2 dimensional life you must live.

Or maybe I just have different taste in music than you do?

Wow, imagine that.

I can respect that, but I am a big 80s Metallica fan I will always hold a grudge.

80's Metallica overrated? The birth of speed and trash metal overrated?!! OOOOOOK. And the Black Album is a musical change for the band. They wanted to go in a new direction. Lets all piss on them for that.

On this website - Oasis is the most overrated band. People here (most likely in UK), treat them like they ARE the next Beatles.. Up there with the greats. When in reality, they about as good as 2nd tier bands like The Offspring & Dave Mattews Band.

Also Megadeath was pretty crappy.

^ Oasis for me too

And in the list from the original post : I'd say Nirvana and Deff Leppard

Yeah, I've also noticed it seems to be a UK thing. Nothing wrong with sticking up to your own boys, of course.

They do suck though :P

Nope Oasis were good back in 1995 with Definatly Maybe that was a stand out album but apart from a couple of other good songs they are not worth the hype, i do think they are better than offspring and Dave Mattews though but nowhere near the Beatles etc

Yeah, I hate Oasis too (and I'm in the UK btw). Awful band imo.
From the list I'd choose Nirvana.

isn't this a thread about personal opinion?
well in that case you are free to believe i am an idiot, and i am free to believe that you are a retarded, beastiality-abusing, pantswetting moron, and that the Ramones are overrated.

Everything new is also overrated as hell, all these strange poppunk bands like Green Day and Blink 128.

Green Day is massively overrated and overplayed. I think System of A Down are overrated too. I think their fans are funny though. After all "My cock is bigger than yours" is the most poetic statement ever. I like some of their songs but come on, not every stupid saying has a huge metaphorical meaning. Every dumb thing someone says becomes very deep if you twist it around and think about it enough.

System of a Down is pretty damn terrible - They use the same vocal tricks with most of their songs, and it gets old fast.

I don't mind Green Day much, but they were definitely overexposed with the recent American Idiot stuff.

What about Disturbed then? I think they're the worst example of a band doing that.

Iron Maiden?  :o
People are always saying everything is better than Maiden, Maiden is non overrated neither underrated, it stays in the coolness of a great band.
Of those I think Nirvana is super overrated.
