With that said, I love the song.  The lyrics are venomous and the music appropriately ferocious.  Ive even come to enjoy the vocal effects, but I hope thats the only time theyre used.

I think they will be only used for that song. I mean, you don't think Axl is in the studio adding some vocal effects to Madagascar or The Blues do you?

Hmm ..

BTW, on a side note .. I was just listening to the VMAs ... more precisely the PC end solo and it rocks! ... Why? Because there are two guitars belting out the solo from Bhead and Finck's solos and that sounds awesome. Imagine the music they could make (and play live even).

Or could have made.

Now I think it was ahead of its time when it came out

How was the song ahead of its time?

Its very much a product of its influences - White Zombie, NIN, probably Smashing Pumpkins.  I certainly dont see anything innovative in the song whatsoever.  Not even close.  I cant even say its particularly innovative for a GNR record, since "My World" covered similar ground 8 years earlier.

With that said, I love the song.  The lyrics are venomous and the music appropriately ferocious.  Ive even come to enjoy the vocal effects, but I hope thats the only time theyre used.

I think you're absolutely right about all the influences. However for a Guns N' Roses song I think it was ahead of its time. I understand what you're saying about My World, but personally I think My World is more an idea than a full blown Guns N' Roses song.

Anyway, Oh My God is great!

It's really hard and i miss a great solo section, but the song really rocks compared to the new stuff. It's a litlle more over on the dark side for the mainstream to see as a hit, but i'm sure that wasn't the intent either.

More songs like this!!! ok

It's a good song, took a while for me to like it, but I do.

That said, it was hardly "ahead of it's time" by any means.
Ministry and others had been doing that stuff long before OMG came out.

An absolute product of Axl's NIN infatuation...

You can find some bootleg live recordings out there, but thats about it.

Silkworms
Madagascar
The Blues
Rhiad and the Bedouins
Chinese Democracy

As far as I know these are the only new songs that exist. Not sure where to find them at this point. I found them about 2 years ago.

It's a great tune indeed. When I first heard it, my frothing demand for the album went up by a million pionts.  ok

What I love most about all these new songs is how they are all really quite different from eachother in terms of style... OMG being the hardest of the bunch.

Cheesy beyond words? undeniably. I can?t deny this. I know. I've been there.
The song has such an intense feel of agony, like hearing ones internal bleeding through the music,
yet it's sublimated beautifully.
Then, this sound causes resonance and strikes the right chord in our hearts.
Well, if you've got a ear for it. Wink

Best version of OMG.

It's surprising that they didn't play it on the 2002 tour

The first time I heard this song... which was back in 1999 when I was not a GnR fan, I was utterly shocked.  It was so different from anything GnR had released before.  I honestly did not like it at all.  Fast forward to 4 years later... I hear the song again on the rare occassion, and I give it an okay / good rating.  I think after the initial shock / surprise, and giving it a few listens, the song is good.  It is not very good or excellent... but it is all right.

Time is relative

« Reply #39 on: December 18, 2004, 07:18:39 AM »

Does anyone have any articles or interviews from around the time when this was released? I'm interested to know why Axl released the song, whether he wrote it specifically for the End Of Days, how they wrote the song (whether everyone got together in the studio, or if they each contributed their own parts) etc etc And who is Gary Sunshine? (apparently he conrtibuted guitars)

Also, a subject for discussion...if Oh My God had been the song for Terminator 2 do you think it would have gone down well with the mainstream public?
