Title: HTGTH t-shirts
Post by: jarmo on January 31, 2005, 02:50:03 PM
People have asked me to make HTGTH t-shirts available.

This is just the first step in finding out if/how we could actually make it happen.

If you're interested, just vote and we'll see what happens. This is just a way to see what kind of budget this thing could have. Maybe we'll end up with Cafe Press again if the interest is low.....

The prices in the poll are without shipping.

Yes, I'm well up for that. I'd even consider a GNR Football Jersey if it could be done (obviously I'd expect to pay more than $10)

Hell yes Jarmo! I'd have one!

Would you have the new Guns logo or something on the back as well? At the london docklands concert in 02 I had HTGTH printed on the back of my UYI t-shirt like they have players names on the back of footy shirts! I guess there were probably other HTGTH users at the concert but they cant have seen it cos, the people who saw it asked me what it stood for! Obviously I explained all about the site, so I'd like to think that there are some people using this site now cos they had a beer and a chat about this site that day in London!!!! ?

I don't think there will be any official GN'R logos on the shirt since those are copyrighted.

I'd pay any $$$ amount for one, just please make it cool enough that I can wear it out.  Like, just a white t-shirt with a logo isn't good enough, imo.....

would be great! maybe something like "We`re all GNR fans" on the back or something!

I agree, make it better than the official merchandise. I'm sure a few budding fashion designers on this board could do a great job!

Where's anarchy when you need him?  He could design a kick ass t-shirt...even without the official logos.  Add in "The most dangerous webmaster in the world's" (aka jarmo) input and I think we'd have some real winners!

Being the website that I have come to dig and love, HTGTH works fine. But If that was on the thing, I won't buy one. Its a reminder of the times (and not the good ones). There were good time for sure during that tour, but it was definitely going downhill then too with things getting too bloated, gay, and all the things we have discussed to death over the years.

Maybe if this had had something more hopeful. Something more pertaining towards right now. Chinese Democracy related.

Or a cool fan statement.

i think the t shirt is a plan.
when i was is vietnam i found a bar called guns n roses, and they sold t shirts(which i bought) and all they had done was adjust the circle logo and put their adress on the back.

there are ways around copyrights

GNR is copyrighted

Guns N Roses copyrighted

but you could use

Guns N' MF'n  Roses
that technically wouldnt be copyright infringement the same way games without licenses can use names similiar to the real guys

Well, how 'bout a black shirt with the red/orange GN'R star with HTGH written over the front of it instead of GN'R (that way you're really not infringing upon any one specific logo...just a plain star).

Either way, I think on the back it should read Jarmo's sig "When you read this I am Banning you!"

Just an idea.  ;)

For those of you wanting to make designs,? the logo has to use the same font used in the logo on the site.

It's called XBAND Rough: http://www.themeworld.com/cgi-bin/preview.pl/fonts/xbandrou.0.zip

Maybe you'll be offended by this comment, which I hope you are not, but I see no reason to pay more than $10 for a shirt that advertises a fan forum. I love the website. I think that if it would end up costing you more than 10 Jarmo, then you probably shouldn't do it. Just my opinion.

so the only way to really do it would be to sell em for at least 15 or else jarmo would be losing money.

NOT to make this a contest (as I don't take this very seriously) but you may run into similar "copywright" problems if Spirit's design is used. I used to work for Getty Images and using a person's (ESPECIALLY A CELEBRITY'S) likeness (ie: their silhouette, a drawing of them, a photograph, etc.) without consent infringes on their rights and you can be held liable for that. The only two surefire ways around it is if the image is used editorially (ie: as Jarmo has on his website) or as obvious parody, but I've seen many scuffles over what is deemed "parody."

Just something to think about. Of course, if these issues don't bother you, go for it. I'm saying that you might as well go for the gusto then and use the Guns N' Roses name then too.  ;)

i think the idea with an axl quote great.
something like: "it's all greek to me."
or "you wanna know where slash is? he's in my ass!" (although this one would be too controversial)

a possible underline could be: "soon is the word".

just ideas floating in my mind, but there are for sure better quotes.

then the back would simply say "Spreading Democracy since 1996" (or something along those lines, point out that this has been a strong fan site for 9 years)

Seems like at least 100 people are interested in this so I guess the demand is there.

About the design, I know most of you like the one with the silhouette of Axl. I like it too, but I'm not sure about putting it on a t-shirt that's gonna be sold. It's from a copyrighted photo and I don't know how the copyright owners would feel about that.

I think you could.

If we do them, you'll probably pay in advance and then the t-shirt will be shipped to you once they're done.

The reason why you'd pay in advance is because I have no interest in sitting with a few hundred unsold t-shirts..... And end up paying for them myself.

conny is right Jarmo

i think as long as u didnt market the shirt on the website u wouldnt be able to get in any trouble for that silhouette thing.

if we send u money and u send us a shirt what could they do?

have the silhouette of axl with a fist instead of the peace sign then technically it isnt the same.

u cant copyright a silhouette anyway, non gnr fans wouldnt know that was axl, hell make it a little slimmer

good idea about getting the money and then making the shirts however u will get them made a lot cheaper if u order bulk then just doing a few at a time

so are u gonna wait a few weeks till everyone sends in cash and then have them made?

or have them made as u receive the money?

I guess the idea is to:

1 - See if there's a demand and if there is, how many we'd print.

2 - Decide on the design. I think the number of colors the design has will affect the price.

3 - Decide on the place where to get them made.

4 - Take orders.

5 - Print them.

6 - Send them out.

If the shirts gets done, there won't be any pictures of any band members on the shirts.

No copyrighted logos or anything like that.

I'm not trying to make money off the GN'R name with these shirts.

So the t-shirt might look like this:

HTGTH

and then maybe something on the back.

I'm not 100% positive but I think any "likeness" of Axl would fall under some kind of copyright protection.? Maybe "copyright" isn't the proper term but I think Axl owns the rights to anything like that silhouette or any other likeness.? I think the only reason that Jarmo would be allowed to use that here is because he's not making any money off it.? Using it on a tee that you would charge people for - even if you're not making a profit on it, I think would be a violation of Axl's ownership rights to his likeness.

GypsySoul is right. Like I mentioned in the past, I used to work for a stock photo company (Getty Images) and delt with these issues on a daily basis. Yes, using Axl's or ANYONE'S likeness for ANY purpose other than editorial usage is concidered to be an infringement...not to mention the use of another PHOTOGRAPHER'S property. Using these silhouettes (which originate from someone else's photo...lol...might even be licenced through Getty Images, in fact) would infringe on BOTH the celebrity AND the PHOTOGRAPHER and while chances are they wouldn't sue Jarmo (which is in their rights to do) I'd be willing to bet his phone would be ringing from at least the Photographer (or agency that manages that photo's licence) asking Jarmo to kindly "offer" to pay for the usage of the photo.

Again, that is IF Axl or the Photographer (licencing company) spots it.

Althought...lol...I shit you not...I've run into cases where this same thing has happened BUT it wasn't the photographer or model that found the improper usage, but a random advertising company who calls, let's say Getty Images, and is ready to pay thousands (sometimes hundreds of thousands) of dollars to use a particular image and PAYS for exclusive usage rights (meaning Getty Images cannot allow for another advertiser or anyone else for that matter to use the image for whatever reason). A few weeks down the road someone in that advertising firm spots the photo they paid top dollar for exclusive usage for and calls up Getty Images to demand partial refund (which makes Getty Images very upset and an investigation then ensues to find the deviant and make him/her pay for the money Getty Images lost in the sale).

LOL...I'm not trying to put the fear of God into you, but I also wouldn't want to see Jarmo get caught in a mess like this (because that's what it ALWAYS turned out to be...a big fuckin' mess). If you wanted to use a photo such as the silhouettes for private party napkins or something more contained than these shirts, I'd say go for it. But you're talking about 100 - 200 shirts that will be printed up and shipped all across the globe, possibly end up on ebay or on other websites, and are spotted at concerts and other events (not to mention this 8 page thread discussing it blatently). My advise would be, stay away from photographs...period!? : ok:

Use words and allusions to GN'R (ie: chinese writing to allude to chinese democracy, bullets, bullet holes, roses, thorns, etc.) in your final design choice.

P.S. -- I REALLY like your design too, IQ! Realize this post IS NOT purposely attacking YOUR idea, but the idea in general.? :peace:

Hey Jarmo,
I know of an internet company that prints t-shirts.  I can create the art work and have it put on different types of shirts.  You can choose shirt types, sizes & colors.  They even have sexy female tops.  I can prepare everything and get it rolling with your permission.  I will design it any way you want (legally) with full color.  Examples of prices are white t-shirts size large full color on the front and back are between $19 and $25 with shipping.  People can purchase them right off of the internet using a credit card.

- There's not gonna be any pictures on the shirt other than the HTGTH logo.

- Guns N' Roses won't be mentioned either.

/jarmo

I think that's a wise idea. However, I'm in favor of having something to depict the band. Something subtle that only a fan would understand (or someone else after having it explained to them). For example, think of all the Fn' (I hate the) Grateful Dead rip off shirts you see around. Maybe the name isn't used on 'em, but you can't copywright the use of a drawn skeleton and that happens to be an image associated with that band.

I think something subtle, that is in no way an infringement, would be coolest. A plain shirt with JUST the abreviation or web address would look too much like an advertisement on a walking billboard.

Sinshine I love that : ok: : ok:
But it might not make any sense after CD is actually released? ????
I also just thought of a new idea we could use the kind of purple or white writing they use in the Gn'R videos I think they use this writing in NR, LALD, DC and Estranged, we could write Chinese Democracy or something in that kind of writing (I think it's Axl's hand writing, he can't copywright that ;D)

Now that would be funny! ;D

Preacher - "Would you mind leading the congregation in prayer?"

Fan - "Sure."

Preacher - "Nice t-shirt."

Fan - "Thanks."

Preacher - "By the way, what do the initials on your t-shirt stand for?"

Fan - "Here Today...Gone To Hell"

Not to complicate things more, but thought I give my two cents...

I have a suggestion to make. Since I'm not too crazy about another black t-shirt, why not having three different background colors ( Just like Contraband) to choose from? We could have a red, a white and a black shirt. Same design, but different background.

The problem with that would be the fact that we'd need to make another logo for the red t-shirt and that would cost more.

I'd like to hear from the ladies here.

I found a place with reasonable prices for those shirts, but as far as girl cuts are concerned, you can only have a V neck. Well, actually it's possible to have a round neck, but it requires a special order and it's therefore more expensive.
So, do V necks bother you or are you fine with them?

On the website I recommanded to Jarmo, female cuts are one size only. But don't worry, the shirts can stretch pretty far  ;D
Otherwise you can still go for a regular boy cut ;)

So far we've been in contact with one place. They can offer both regular and girls' shirts as well as doing some of the order on white shirts in addition to black ones. The prices seem reasonable to me.

That's probably the choices you'll have in colors. Black or white. I'd like to offer other colors but then I'd need a new logo and that would cost more. It's kinda pointless to make a new print for three or whatever red shirts.

Right now we're looking at it being like this:

Regular shirt / Girls' fit shirt
Black / white

Edit: Payments will probably be made through Paypal.

Diffrent logo? you just change the color to black instead of red....and the printer can still use the same design...(atleast that's how it works at a regular printershop...maybe the site you've been contacting works diffrently...to make some more money ;)).

Jarmo, maybe you could offer a HTGTH t-shirt to Axl when (if) you interview him one day? ;D
Just bring one with you, maybe he will put it during a show in the future who knows? ;)

Can we somehow consolidate the 2 threads? Or lock part 1 and direct posters to part 2.   Just make life easier to follow the convo.
