Title: Best Albums Of 2005
Post by: Eazy E on November 21, 2005, 11:59:57 AM
Well there's only about a month left, so there won't be too many more releases in 2005 (other than a bunch of hits packages).  So which album was the best of 2005?

I only bought 4 or 5 CDs that were released this year... Overall I'd have to give it to: Kanye West - Late Registration -- That's two classic hip hop albums in as many years.  It's got a lot of guest appearances, but none of them overshadow Kanye (except maybe Jay-Z).  Refreshing to hear something different than 50 Cent with mainstream appeal.

My other favourites are Gorillaz & Common... Rock didn't do much for me this year, I'm still mixed on Audioslave's new one.

My favourite has been:

Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Oasis - Don't Believe the Truth
The Thrills - Let's bottle Bohemia (this was released in '04, but I discovered them this year so...)
Bright Eyes - I'm awake it's morning

Nine Inch Nails "With Teeth" is the best album of the year. Trent Reznor can still write angry rock songs as well as beautiful ballads.

Other great ones are Audioslave "Out Of Exile" (full of great songs) and Depeche Mode "Playing The Angel" (noise can be a beautiful thing)

Foo Fighters "In Your Honor" and Queens Of The Stone Age "Lullabies To Paralyze" were also enjoyable.

Best compilation of the year was Screaming Trees "Ocean Of Confusion".

Oh wait, i remembered one decent album this year produced,

Opeth - Ghost Reveries - melodic death metal, or something like that - its a fine album, helped immensly by leaving cookie monster vocals to a minimum, shows off their superb musical abilities, great arrangements, and some powerhouse riffs, my album of the year, against zero competition.....victory by default :hihi:

Opeth's best albums are Deliverance and Blackwater Park. I'm not a huge Opeth fan, but I listen to them sometimes. If you like Opeth, Agalloch and Arcturus are similar, but much better. Opeth has some decent songs I enjoy, but the others create some absolutely beautiful folk/ambient/post-black/whatever music. They're definitely album type bands, where it's the whole thing at once or nothing.

They are certainly worth a go - but i've only got their latest album so can't speak for the rest, if 10 min songs are ur thing then it might be worth a download or two.

Totally agree with NIN "With Teeth"

I am very unimpressed however with both Audioslave singles Ive heard. I guess Im just not a big Chris Cornell fan as I never liked Soundgarden either.

So my favorites would be:

Nine Inch Nails "With Teeth" hands down winner

Bon Jovi "Have A Nice Day

Joe Osburn EP

Tommy Lee Tommyland the ride

Yes they are!  Maybe not as "metal" as the crap you listen to.
Quote

Pay more attention to the song structures. They reuse the same boring, simple, power chord groove "riff" for the whole song, they have no or lame solos, the songs are stupidly downtuned, the guitars are rhythm driven instead of melody driven, the bass is funky and stands out too much, and they follow the forumulaic verse-chorus-verse pattern all the time. Oh yeah, there are the annoying soft verses and screaming "heavy" choruses too. They're a hard rock mallcore band, not heavy metal.

http://www.entertainment.inuk.com/music/numetalguide.html

I doubt if you've heard bands like Slough Feg, Shadow Gallery, or Manilla Road, since they're nearly universally loved in the metal scene. They're making some of the finest music we have today.

off the top of my head...

And the re-release/re-issue/best boxset (and I would have said this before the movie came out) - Johnny Cash: Legend

The CDs by Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade are awesome.
Both are bands out of Montreal and have a very distinct sound. They make me happy to be alive in this time of music

Wow, could you narrow it down a little?  :P

A lot of people have said "With Teeth", is it really that good?  I've heard 3 songs from it (The Hand That Feeds, Right Where It Belongs & Only)... I thought the first two were great, but I didn't really like the 'talking' deal on Only.  A few friends didn't seem too enthusiastic about the album either.  Is the rest of the album on par with The Hand That Feeds & Right Where It Belongs?... will you still be listening to it in a couple of years?

Its not as layered as past NIN CDs. It's probably about as close to a "full band" type CD that NIN will make. It feels really raw to me, even though it still has plenty of weird sounds throughout.

But I really think it's an amazing CD. It's just not as "big" as The Fragile or The Downward Spiral. Its a CD of seperate songs... No stories through the lyrics or themes in songs. Just a "regular" CD.

I'd really recomend it though!

For me there hasn't been a single album released this year worth the time it took to record....

You need to listen to more music, then!  : ok:

*checks your list*

I stand by my position more firmly than ever :hihi:

However, Exodus's new album - i have heard good things about them, what style are they, and don't say ambient black metal :peace:

Go on, buy it, you'll probably really like it.  :peace:

They are generally thrash metal and if you like Slayer-type music then you'll probably like this. It's a bit like Slayer but I find it more interesting (not to mention the solos sound better!).

If you do like their new one then don't hesitate to buy 'Tempo of the Damned', their album of 2004. It's a really fun album.
