I am having a hard time believing that brian is on the version we have, I am not saying it isnt but it just doesnt have his signature sound it sounds more like robin to me.

It's not Brian, and I don't think its Robin.

Talking of the new version, if you play it with headphones for the last 2 minutes or so, can u hear an annoying skipping sound?

It's may on guitar and i think it might be josh playing the drums.
Its May only in the solos. The rhythm guitars are done by Paul Tobias (in the right side of the speaker) and Robin (in the left).

Best song of all the leaks and definitely has the potential to be classic.  I however hope that its not on the album.  It doesnt sound like the other songs, seems like a different feel and that it should be played by a different cast of characters.  I think this song should remained pretty stripped down like it is now, I really wouldnt want it to get too cluttered with having 2 keyboardists, 2 drummers, 3 guitarists, and a bassist all at once, or having a BH/BBF esque solo thrown on it or something.  I like that on Better and the grittier, industrial kind of discotechno tracks, but Mays bluesy simplistic solos and the simple rhythms should stay.  I really would hate it if this song got cluttered or "modernized."

From many reports I read (mostly by posters on GNR forums) it was about MDC and the Lennon killing, but who knows.  I think it is a lot more than just a piece about that, but thats my own personal opinion.  Someone would have to ask Axl what the total meaning was to him when he wrote it.

Nope. Better, TWAT and IRS have been played but not CITR.

About the lyrics:

I think the line

How about it? Talk about it

is actually

How a body took a body

or something to that effect. It would fit in more with the Lennon thing.

Is this song related with John Lennon?

i'm pretty sure, it is. i told tommy stinson that i thought it was a cool and subtle move of axl to bring those two views (of mark chapman and holden cauldfield) together in one song. he answered that john lennon would probably not see it this way... Wink
and he's right: "cool" is not the word. but i hope "soon" is.

the dude who killed lennon had an obsession with the book catcher in the rye (i'm sure this has been said plenty of times in this thread).  "how a body took a body" is from the book, its part of this whole rhyme thing, but i can't remember it or the book in general very well.

He actually had the bookon him.  I guess Axl's reclusiveness during the mid-late 90's is why I thought this song was written.  His movement away from fame was very much like Salinger.  Thats why i think somoene would have to ask Axl, because I always thought it was about Axl and the public/media, the MDC thing makes a lot of sense too Hinkley (reagan's shooter) also was obsessed with CITR.  Some people have suggested legal problems with this because Salinger has been very litigious, but lately most of his suits have fallen through and besides adapting his actual works I think there wouldnt be any problems.

I find these lines tie it too Lennon as well

On an ordinary day, not in an ordinary way
All at once the song I heard, no longer would it play
For anybody, or anyone

I love this song...I hope to hell it is on the album. It is a classic already. I dig the Lennon/Queen 70's feel to it.

See, I guess I took those lines to mean that out of no where he decided to remove himself from the public eye, hording the music he created and not playing it for anyone.? Like Salinger whose house is supposedly filled with giant safes that in turn are filled with manuscripts, screenplays, novels etc... That he wants no one to read until he dies.? His daughter even said they have notes on them like "this can be changed" or "publish as is" etc...

I totally get the Lennon message too, and i might be clouded as I have always thought there was a lot in common between axl and salinger.
