i love the new designs - though Megatron perhaps wasnt as well thought out as he could have been

None of the designs were "well thought out," as they're all based around one huge brain-fart: These designs are supposed to be "realistic" because when in robot form  all of the internal and external vehicle parts are still on display. Why is that a fallacy? Because these giant robots aren't really cars and trucks, they're really giant robots. Why are they full of car parts? Surely they should be full of robot parts which facilitate transmogrification between their different forms? Shouldn't they? Of course they should. Silly robots.

Maybe they evolved from Nasa space-junk. That would be pretty ironic.

I cant believe Im going to actually try and argue this point, but Im board.  The designs dont look like the cartoon because this is "live action".  Thats why they dont resemble the original designs.  Optimus looks awsome.  And so does Bumblebee.  Im waiting to see how the rest work on screen. Also, did you want Megatron to become a hand held gun?  Im happy they came up with new designs.  It makes this movie more than just a retro 80s thing.   Anyways, Im not some Transformers fanboy,  I just hate that message boards have become a dumping ground of negativity when it comes to movies.  Also, Michael Bay isnt THAT bad.  He delivers what he promises.  Pearl Harbor was kinda dumb, because he took himself too seriously. And since then, he has become an easy target.  But I felt that he redeemed himself with the Island.

That makes no sense. Transformers fanboys could point to any number of cross-platform franchises as proof that good design transcends media. And in return we could argue that Transformers cartoon characters are hardly the pinnacle of iconic design. To which the fanboys could argue that if you don't like the design of the characters and you intend to change their story there seems to be little point in licensing their franchise when you could just make up your own robot names and silly narrative and call it an original movie, leaving their 80s cartoon franchise unmolested. To which we would reply "well, that's Hollywood for you."

Amen, brother.

I'll wait for the DVD...then, if it's shit, at least I can stop it, get up, put it in my driveway, and back over it repeatedly why cursing Bay.

And if it's not...I'll only have waited about 3 months longer than the theater crowd.

Seems a worthwhile trade off.....

Why are they full of car parts?

...er, disguise...remember?

You could ask why a giant robot would bother to take on a disguise in the first place - the whole transformation thing is pure nonsense, it serves no purpose at all!

...but its fun, aint it?

Quote
Surely they should be full of robot parts which facilitate transmogrification between their different forms? Shouldn't they?

...er...they do.

What looks like a car door etc is just a part of their body...disguised. Its full of 'robot parts' but outwardly has been formatted for its new appearence

..if you could make your hard drive look like a steering wheel, hell - why the hell not?

The original cartoon designs were shite even back then - 30 foot robot into a gun...or boom box...and where DID that trailer come from?

Funnt how people forget this stuff....

Why would a robot able to fly convert into a plane? hihi

...indeed, Nasa missions ACHIEVEING something! rofl

Transformers are supposed to be aliens, wouldnt an alien design look.....alien to our eyes?

izzy i don't get you at all...you shit all over movies that most people like, yet you applaud the AWFUL designs/story of this movie that almost everyone else seems to hate.   do you like just going against the grain??

how anyone who is even remotely a fan of the original show says these designs are good is WAY beyond me.

...how will it be....''shit''?

Ur not seriosuly going to evaluate a film designed to sell toys, made by a toy company by criteria like plot, acting and internal coherance? confused

The original show was utterly absurd - gun>robot, the fact the governments of Earth never reacted to the Transformers and the strange decision of both factions to fight over Earth rather than just get ''energon'' elsewhere...

Transformers has always been stupid - its about blatant commericialism and having a good time,

How the hell will a director that fills his films with product placements anyway possible go wrong?!?

Please, I know you love me.

What is "find all the red crystals"??  I don't remember that one.

I don't know what is wrong with re-telling a good story.  Why do you have to make up a new one...just to be "bold" and "fresh".  Yeah, I have an idea...lets remake superman and give him a kid!! GENIUS!!  Or how about we tell the story of darth vader growing up but lets introduce this guy named Jar-Jar b/c its "bold" and "fresh".  I'm glad you're not writing movies.

What I meant was, in the cartoon, because its animation, they can magically transform from robot to car without anyone questioning it.   In the "real" world, the robot designs actually have to look like they can work, and actually transform.  Thats the biggest reason for the design change.  Also, the designs are updated so as to not look like an 80s cartoon.  And by the way, how is making a live action movie molesting an 80s franchise?  The cartoons are still there.  You can watch them whenever you want.  The movie does nothing to them.  I dont even know if Im going to like this movie.  Im just saying I understand a lot of what the filmakers have been doing.  Changes are neccessary.  A strict translation to film would be pointless, and really wouldnt work anyway.

I have no problems with changes.  but when you radically redesign how the characters look, change their entire origin story....why!?!?  does prime need flames on him?  do robots have lips!!!!!!!  No more Arc? No matrix?  Starscream looks like a monkey....

some changes are just STOOOPID.  did batman need nipples on his costume?  Izzy probably loved that...TOTALLY bold move!!!

I realize what the film is supposed to be.....and I certainly enjoy a good summer popcorn action blockbuster as much as the next guy.  I'm just not sure Bay can pull it off.  We'll see.

Notice I said "IF it's shit", not "it will be shit".  For my money, it's still even money how it will turn out.  Because execution is going to be everything in this type of movie.  So I'll wait.

This is a pretty early picture, but the final version still looks like shit.

Ok, I understand that they would have gotten in trouble by just converting the cartoon characters, but these things look nothing like Transformers, they just look like som crazy aliens, and I've seen better ones.

All the designs I've seen seem to put me in the mind of "Independance Day"...I don't know why.

I thought the same.

Man if they want to combine robots that really look like Transformers and besides have a realistic transformation concept, why not base it on an advanced design of the Alternators line?

Man, the point when I was really shocked was when I saw Starscream. He's such a cool character, and now he looks like a fuckin' robot-chicken.

I really, really don't want to watch them but thanks all the same.

I can appreciate that some changes are usually necessary in making an unnecessary translation from kids cartoon to kids live-action movie but I'm more sympathetic towards the pre-existing fans on this one. We aren't looking at simple aesthetic changes here but radical redesigns of the characters and rewriting of their story which goes so far beyond the "necessary" as to suggest that those involved in the production are less interested in "bringing the franchise to the big screen" than they are in making lots of money by sticking recognizable names and logos on their otherwise unrelated giant robot movie.

But if there's one thing I enjoy about how this "translation" has played out it's that the inevitable line of toys based on this movie-based-on-a-cartoon-based-on-a-toy-line are going to be so impractical or potentially injurious as to defeat the very purpose of the movie.
