It pretty much sucks.
But early Darkthrone was pretty good.

I'm into a lot of black metal, particularly symphonic black metal, but I was never big into death metal. It just gets too repetitive for me what with the bad vocals and shitty production. The death metal elements in a band like Behemoth or Necrophagia are about as far as I go into the genre.

Well, there's more shitty production to be found in the black metal genre, though.
I don't listen to that much death metal really, but here's a few favorites:
Opeth
Gojira
Edge of Sanity
Moontower by Dan Swan? (Add Reality = utterly sincere, even touching, love song with dm vocals... rocks!
)
Cephalic Carnage
Gorefest
Atheist
Tales From the Thousand Lakes by Amorphis
...and some good ole Napalm Death as well

For the ultimate Death Metal album get Deicide's first album. Just brilliant.
Or Nectroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious by Carcass.
Or Clandestine by Entombed
A lot of modern death metal is just rubbish and has been done to death (pardon the pun).
More of a Black Metal fan myself.....
Now playing: Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro.....

when i look at genres and bands from eras.
i can really see the repetativeness of them all.
all death metal and black metal bands have similar styled names and song titles, its funny.
before anyone complains, im talking bout all genres including those i like.

I assume you mean bands like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Death, etc.
Awful...fucking awful.
Very, very adolescent.

I'm not that familiar with the first two, but what's so adolescent about Death?
Compared to, say, metal in general?

People should listen to Black Metal, if anything... It's way better than Death Metal.
Here's some bands that you can/should check out if you're interested:
Burzum
Mayhem
Darkthrone
Those are probably the three most popular and "best" bands in the genre.
Darkthrone were alright back in their early days - but they are awesome now that they've changed their style to Punk/Black/Rock/Metal.

burzum, mayhem and darkthrone are black metal
i recommend.. CARCASS's Swansong and the last DEICIDE album
those are great.. you should check TESTAMENT
you shloud check the father of death metal.. POSESSED's Seven Churches
NECROPHAGIST is cool.. but is technical death metal.
I'm more into BRUTAL DEATH METAL...
is more close to grindcore/goregrind
Disavowed, Disgorge, Krisiun, Nile, Skinless, Immolation, Suffocation, Wormed--
i like a lot a band called Animals Killing People.. very very very wicked and underground
if you like metalcore.. you should check some deathcore bands..
throug the eyes of the death is cool.. despised icon too.. Job for a Cowboy is ok..

That's what I said...
And Darkthrone isn't black metal, they've changed their style to metal influenced by punkrock.

yeah.. i read bad..
was sleepy
yeah i know darkthrone is more mainstream now
i consider darkthrone black metal.. cuz i only hear the early records..
and yeah i also prefer black over death metal..
more meaningful, more textures, more power..
i have some great underground discs.. we can exchange discs and shit.. PM

Blood in Our Wells
is according to most opinions their greatest album thus far, and it's my favorite as well. Check it out for some quality folk-influenced, atmospheric black metal

I listen to a lot of melodic death metal. Some genre classics & personal faves (some of which aren't melodic):
The Absence - Riders of the Plague
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Death - The Sound of Perseverance
Enforsaken - The Forever Endeavor
Insomnium - Above the Weeping World
Norther - Mirror of Madness
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Wintersun - Wintersun

Yep, I was kinda hoping I would get to see them live as they started touring with Simen on lead vocals, but then they unfortunately quit...
But man what a diverse legacy they left behind:
Aspera Hiems Symfonia is my favorite black metal album
La Masquerade Infernale is my favorite avant-garde metal album
and The Sham Mirrors is one of my favorite prog metal albums

Just been looking into some Death metal bands and wondered what you guys think about the genre and bands within it.
i'm a fan. i don't listen to it on a regular basis, but once in a while i need my fill. and i love going to death metal concerts...it's an interesting cultural experience and seeing the music played live is really impressive.
slayer is my fav, but i don't really consider them death metal. but you haven't bought anything as heavy as them, start here. Reign in Blood is arguably the greatest heavy metal album ever made.
other favs are morbid angel, deicide, sepultura, and obituary.
a good starting point for true death metal is morbid angel's Altars of Madness.
