Use Your Illusion I (1991)

« on: May 09, 2008, 02:54:47 PM »

I know Adler was messed up and the band had to redo this song a ton right?

Well I was wondering... on the album is it actually Adler playing drums.. ( i know he credited )

or is it a drum machine doing it? Always was confused about this...

someone clear this up please.

thanks

I think it's Steven playing.

But the drum track had to be edited together using many takes.

yes its Adler....but it was heavily edited according to Slash...so in other words a chimpanzee could have banged on the drums for about an hour and GNR would have taken the best of what was recorded and spliced it into the song....so yes Steven gets credit for the song....but ...

I was always under the impression that Matt re-recorded the drum parts.

You can clear up that misunderstanding by opening the booklet to UYI II

Adler, 100%. If you listen carefully with headphones on you can actually hear a few mistakes.....especially with the drumkick, or delay in timing all over the place  love

I do like the inconsistent groove though, hehe. It gives the song a floating feel to it which I like a lot, in fact I think it is the best drum parts on the Illusions (not technically but groove). So, well done Adler, eventhough it was not your intention.

And I will say this...the sound of Steven's drumkit is much better than Matt's bitchy setups. Would have liked to hear the entire Illusions with that Civil War drum sound  peace

Yeah, I noticed that way back in 1991. Man, if you ever seen GN'R at the Farm Aid concert in 1990, Stever screws up that song so bad (drum wise). He is my most favorite drumer ever. UYI would have kicked so much more ass if steven was on it. But I agree with slash, Steven was waaaay to screwed up to even play correctly.

I really would like to hear Brain give this song a shot.

On a side note, I heard Civil War today on the radio, I think thats a first for me.

There's also an edit on the Nobody's Child album, which I guess wouldn't be an edit 'cause it was released before the albums. Just a different mix.

Civil War was definetly Adler it is was the first 3 songs that would be released on soundtracks/compilations before and leading up to the UYI albums.....and it's release came before Adlers last gig performing the song at FARM AID....so Matt Sorum had not even joined yet

1) "Civil War" was released on a benefit CD for I beleive starving children in Romania ( I know I spent the $15 just for the one new GNR track and it was worth it)

2) "Knockin on Heavens Door" Days of Thunder soundtrack

3) "You Could be Mine" Terminater II (of course)

all leading up to the long awaited ( yeah hindsites 20/20, doesn't seem very long now compared to Chin Dem)
UYI records and the 1st or maybe the 4th single 'Don't Cry'

2) "Knockin on Heavens Door" Days of Thunder soundtrack

According to Slash's book [page 311: "The first recording with Matt was "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", for the Days Of Thunder soundtrack (which also ended up on the Illusions albums)] it was Matt who played drums on it.
The release date of the soundtrack was June 27, 1990 while Farm Aid was in April, so Matt could have easily layed down the drum tracks as indicated by Slash in his book.
Although quotes show that YCBM and especially the arrangement of it never changed throughout the AFD-recordings-session to UYI albums, I still do not believe that it did sound that way we know it when Steven played YCBM.

Taken from gnrsource.com-songinfo:

Slash: We wrote that during "Appetite" and the arrangement never changed really.

Matt: The drumkit i used on "Use Your Illusion" 1 & 2 was a Yamaha rock tour custom. I used a much larger kit than I use live. Five toms for those big drum fills!!! "November Rain" and "You Could Be Mine".

Thanks, kid! I wasn't arguing the point, just stating that I simply didn't realize Adler's parts were actually used. I always thought they were all scrapped and re-recorded by Matt.

Next time I'll be sure re-read my liner notes more carefully before I open my mouth again.

^^^I am one to argue it is Matt. The drum sound is virtually identical to Matt's or the rest of the record. You can't get a duplicate sound from two entirely different drumsets.

Don't feel bad... a lot of people here a complete dousche bags... some have a smart-ass answer for everything.

You can tell it is Steven Adler. If you listen to Steven on Appetite there is what some drummers call a "swing to the beat". Allot of drummers play like this. It's a style. Matt on the other hand is more precise and mechanical on the beat. Both drumming is a prefered playing. It's Steven for sure. : )

Adler (although an average drummer) has a very cool classic rock drum sound...Matt's sounds is very drum machine like, lifeless, it doesn't breath at all.

As you can see, we all have different set of ears...and because it is about taste, we are all right   peace
