Oh please

this dude is as good if not better than Robin and he is a LEAGUES beyond Robin when it comes to songwriting.

Life Is Beautiful and Saints of Los Angeles were two of the biggest hits of the summer last year on rock radio and his guitars parts are excellent.

He is also a true GNR type of guy and not a dude from a different world TRYING to be a GNR guitarist.
Robin has an unique style, he didn't try to be anything. This guy doesn't have an unique style, just tries to copy crue/gn'r and thats where he starts to go wrong.
He is a corporate mold, a "modern rocker" if you will, just like Life Is Beautiful and SoLA and thats why they "top the charts".

You could almost guess what kind of songs he would write for GN'R, you would never be able to tell that with Robin and thats why I liked him more.

This is of course just my opinion. Would be cool if you don't delete my posts  ok

DJ is officially in the band as one of three guitar players, he's replacing Robin.

When the press release talks about Robin, it means that Robin is part of the history of GN'R as well as being part of Chinese Democracy.

/jarmo

So, do you know, is Robin gone for good, or just for the upcoming tour (or the initial legs of the tour)?

Ali

DJ is in the band, he's not just a temporary replacement:

O.k.  Thanks for clearing that up.  The whole joining for an upcoming tour thing made me think that perhaps it was just a touring situation.

Ali

thanks for clearing this up jarmo. sad to see robin gone for good Sad.

never heard of DJ (what an awful name btw), but I have faith that Axl knows what he is doing.

Anyway, welcome to gnr DJ! peace

My thing is makane

Robin is PERFECT with NIN. I love hearing Robin play live in NIN.

I just think that is more of where his style fits.

I just don't think Axl's voice and Robin's solos are a good match. I don't think Robin complements Axl's voice real well.

Also, like previously said, Get this guys riffs and Axl's voice on a CD and it will be magic.

U have to understand, this guy has tons of talent. U put someone with the creative mind like Axl leading this guy and pushing him, its untelling what he will come up with.

Don't hate on DJ cause he has written some cool modern rock radio hits.

U tend to say it like its a bad thing.

McKane, good post.  And I agree.  GNR has always been different, even in the 80's when every band had a virtuoso on guitar with a serious vocal range singer, yada yada yada, then GNR came in with 70's influences with ballsy guitars (Les Pauls) and were rough around the edges, nobody was like them at that time.  This is equivalent to getting the guitar player from Faster Pussy Cat or Trixter, ya, probably a great player, but like the guy in every other band....

I'm shocked and disappointed also.  Everytime I get attached to the guitarists in GnR, they leave.  I wasn't fond of Finck at first but after hearing CD, he amazed me. I WILL miss him being on stage, especially after seeing him at Hammerstein a few years ago.  Buckethead was just godly. I wish he would've taken Finck's spot, even if it is temporary.

I saw DJ last year in concert and he didn't impress me that much.  He is good though and I'm sure he will grow on me like Ron has. He will prove to me that he is good just like the rest before him.  But at this point, I rather see and hear Finck on stage with GnR.

I rather see GnR tour with DJ then sit around waiting for Finck.

Welcome DJ and best wishes to Finck.

U still have Ron for the crazy fast stuff though.

This guy is a better Robin in my opinion. Fits perfect though. More of a GNR style IMO.

Now if he totally butchers  Slash's solo, I may change my mind, but we shall see. He definitely is a cool guy and someone people and the press could really get behind.

I can certainly see DJ on the radio interviews whereas I couldn't necessarily see Robin.

I really liked watching Robin live, he was way more interesting then Slash, and had a unique sound that added to GN'R. Every guitarist that has been part of the band since 2001 had some sort of memorable impression, so hopefully Ashba can too. What is his stage presence like ?

I thought Life is Beautiful was a great song, what was his role in that song ?

wrote the guitar riffs/solos

wrote the guitar riff on the Motley song Saints of Los Angeles plus the guitar riffs for most of the songs on that CD which are pretty rocking.

The dude is a great songwriter and that is missing in GNR cause outside of Axl, like Tommy said, not very many of them knew how to make a record.

The Saints of LA riff is badass...fucking ace. Wish for something like that could come to GNR one of these days...CD doesn't really have even one of them.

I didn't try to make it a "Robin is a better guitar player, 'cause blaablablaa", but more of a comparison as to why I think this new guy isnt't good for GN'R.

Don't hate on DJ cause he has written some cool modern rock radio hits.

Maybe I do. Maybe I think the songs arent that good really.
You seem to be more interested how he can make a "hit" for GN'R and do publicity stunts than how he could actually help GN'R evolve and do new inspiring music, which I think would eventually lead to success as well. Maybe not the #1 Modern rock single, but thats not what I want...

But D, fuckint Fortus can rip on the guitar, and he is cool, but I don't hear him on the radio or anything... And he plays with Rhianna!  He is good, he is solid, but in the world of GNR, as of now, he is a Gilby and hasn't done anything yet.  So for now, I see him as a touring guitar player and that is great cause we get a live GNR, but wishing for studio work at this time is premature.
