Here Today...

« on: December 16, 2009, 05:14:59 PM »

Probably already a thread on this, but I'm not about ready to search for it on here.

I have no idea where to post this, but I have a couple questions.

1)  Anyone know roughly how many copies Chinese Democracy has sold worldwide and also in US alone?

2)  Does anybody know if Chinese Democracy has sold more copies than any Velvet Revolver album or not?

1) It has sold at least 5 million worldwide and around 600-700k in the US although over 1 million units were shipped through the Best Buy deal.

2) CD has definitely sold better than Libertad, probably not Contraband though.

I imagine CD will eventually sell more than Contraband worldwide, but Contraband has sold more to date in the US.

yeah contraband has sold way more than 2 -3 million worldwide.  its easily up to 5, 6 or 7 million now.

The 5 million figure for CD seemed to come from a pretty unlegit website if i remember correctly but its probably about right.

probably so, a high number of customers look at the "GNR" section everyday in music stores and VR disbanded almost 2 years ago so interest in them isn't at an all time high  Smiley

Garry, they are American Bands, so doing good in America is still important.

Contraband has sold more than CD, but CD with time should pass CB.

It seems like all the numbers are just hear say...So I take it there isn't a site that tells you how many albums have been sold by bands?

By the way, the reason I ask is because I've got this idiot spouting out shit about GNR and how they suck and will never outdo anything Slash is doing. ..lol  I'm so tired of hearing about Slash and about how the new GNR isn't really GNR without Slash!...The way I feel is get the fuck over it.  And if these people would open up their narrow little minds, they would probably come to appreciate this new band very much.  I mean shit, bands break up all the time, but for some reason GNR wasn't supposed to../:

Also, I wouldn't use album sales to prove your point. Look at Nickelback

They're probably both quite equal.  Velvet Revolver actually sold really well and were more successful than they get credit for.
But i think eventually CD will sell more because people are always buying CD's in the "GNR!" section of music stores.
Having a huge name like GNR will always help album sales.

but as pointed out above -  album sales are not too important.

Or the fact that GNR will keep touring and promoting this album whereas VR is done!

I didnt start the thread and im not that into album sales anyways.

but a few years back Contraband had sold 4 million copies worldwide.  If i get time ill search around the net for figures. Smiley

Just search for contraband on wikipedia and the info is in there.  a few years back it had sold 2.9 in the US and 4 million worldwide.  Not sure what the figures are now though.

i know wiki is not too official but thats were people seem to take the 5 million for CD from.

the 5 million figure for CD isnt just from wiki, news sources are quoting it too:

Chinese Democracy, G n R's first album with new material in over 15 years, has sold a disappointing 5 million copies worldwide after its release last November.

http://www.newstalk650.com/story/20091023/24332

just because Contraband had sold 4 million worldwide a year or so after its release, you cant extrapolate that it has reached 6 million by now. that could only happen if the album has continued to sell thousands of copies every month since then and you havent presented any evidence that it has.

it was also reported to be more than 4 million in a thread on this forum.
But as i say, im not interested in comparing the albums.

Of course an album under the GNR name would sell better.  GNR are one of the biggest bands in the world and people checking the GNR section each day while shopping will see CD.

maybe not in the states though cos of that whole best buy thing.
