As a fan of a lot of the other "27 Club" members. I personally thought Amy Winehouse was talented and had a nice soulful voice. RIP

I was shocked, but not surprised.  Very, very sad.  It would be so awful to have those types of demons and addictions that are so difficult to overcome.  Personally, I wasn't into her, but she was a gifted musician who just couldn't escape herself.   RIP.

Not too familiar with her work but yeah, always sad to see someone die at the age of 27.

When she was straight (which wasn't often, it seems) she had an amazing, powerful, GORGEOUS voice that was the equal to some of the greats (Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin).

when she was a mess...she was a freaking disaster.  You can find (though now it seems sort of morbid to watch) smoe youtube clips of her most recent concert, from June of 2010, in Belgrade.  The girl was fucked up beyond all reason.  SOO fucked up, I can't understand why someone didn't pull her off stage and get her help.  Maybe she was beyond helping.....I don't know.  Even so, even not knowing what would happen a month later, it just seems someone should have seen, THAT night, what was going on and should have pulled her off stage.  Money or no money.  Contract or no contract.

And to have her die about a month later.....it's just tragic.

"There were always ample warnings
There were always subtle signs
And you would have seen it comin'
But we gave you too much time"

I feel bad for her family....because while it's horrible that the world lost her talent...I think it's worse that her parents lost their daughter.

I don't get it, either.  I'm not "wired" that way, I guess.  I mean...I guess we all can do self destructive things.  But the sheer extent of addiction just baffles me.

My extended family has had more than it's share of addicts.  Some of them died young.  Some of them found sobriety.  Some skate the line and are generally miserable....and make those around them miserable.  I don't get the appeal.  When the drugs wear off, the problems are still there.  Eventually you have to cope, clean up the messes...or die.   I mean, ultimately those are your only choices.  And suicide (either direct or by virtue of dependance on a needle/bottle/pipe/whatever) never seems like a very good option......

I think the better question is who the fuck is surprised?  Is it sad yes, but when someone has no regard for their own life, and is constantly pushing it and pushing it eventually this is going to happen.  I don't think anyone is really shocked by this, but I understand being sad she was a great talent.

she was actually a better singer than all of them, but didn't have a resume nearly as impressive, I would say she was better than Janis, but doesn't touch the other 3.   Thats tough company though, Morrison is one of the best lyricists of all-time, Hendrix is one of the best guitar players of all-time, and Kurt Cobain was one of the best songwriters of his generation...

Bullshit on her being a better singer than Janis! Janis was fucking timeless, Amy was just a wannabe who looked like a Transvestite.
