GUNS N' ROSES Guitarist Is 'Really Excited' About Working On Follow-Up To 'Chinese Democracy'

During an interview (see video below) with the Artisan News Service on the "black carpet" of this past Thursday night's (November 4) party to promote the release of the new video game "Call Of Duty: Black Ops" in Hangar Eight at Santa Monica Airport, California, GUNS N' ROSES guitarist D.J. Ashba said that fans won't have to wait long for the band's next studio album. "We're talking about that right now," he said. "We've been throwing around a bunch of ideas and it should be good, man. We've got a lot of good stuff on the plate coming out. It won't take as long, I promise. Yeah, I'm excited to get this next one rolling. A lot of great shit. Axl [Rose, vocals] has a lot of good shit up his sleeve, so I'm really excited about it."

Ok, just overanalysing what Ashba said, but I can't help (Im excited).

He says "Axl [Rose, vocals] has a lot of good shit up his sleeve, so I'm really excited about it." I assume he's talking about songs from the Bucket-Robin era, right?

It would really make it easier for everyone if we don't assume anything, but I guess that's just wishful thinking... huh?

I think the same will almost repeat itself from Rons' situation with Chinese Democracy. I think the songs will be a mix from the 2002 era with the 2005/2006 era. And I feel DJ will be doing what Ron did with Chinese, which is adding his own licks here and there, and maybe even get to do some solos.

i still remember doug gouldstein saying in 99 that Chinese Democracy was 99% musically done and 80% vocally...

My birthday is in February.  Happy Birthday to ME if this ends up happening!  Not that I don't trust DJ.  I just know how sometimes things don't go as planned.  Very exciting "plans" indeed though.  Oh, and a new album would be fantastic.  I wonder if they'd start debuting newer songs if/when it comes closer to being released.  A little preview perhaps.

Is it because I live in Europe or are there other Americans who are more excited about the album then the tour?
I love a guns n' roses gig but an album with new material would be, I don't know.. euphoric ? ;-)

This news doesn't surprise me at all when I saw them in the UK they were simply on top of their game. The band is gelling better than ever, AXL sounds incredible & was in a great mood every nite. Not too mention they came on early about every nite (early for them anyway).

Simply put:  This band looks & feels like their ready for something big!! : ok:

Not to speak for all of America, but yeah it's because you live in Europe.  In case you haven't noticed, we here in the US haven't gotten to see this new lineup perform the CD songs unless you took a trek to South Dakota or Canada, while they played every other nook and cranny of the world.  So forgive us for chomping at the bit to see them live again.

Obviously we'd all be stoked for a new album, but I would hope/think a US tour would come first.  So let's take care of that and then we'll move on to a new album.  At least that's how I see it.  Of course, if they want to release a new album in the next couple of months and THEN tour the US.  I'd be fine with that too.  :peace:

Won't take as long.. so it could be 6 years..

That is very interesting, so I wonder if they are starting fresh and scrapping the stuff they already have recorded or maybe using the best of whats left from the CD sessions and maybe write a few new songs with this lineup?

What a stupid post that was about preferring an album to a tour.

I'm european, been to 3 gigs, but I'm very excited for all you US fans who are going to get to see Guns.

The news is great, just to know that there are plans in place is heartwarming.

Let's hope the boys have a kick-ass US leg and then get some R&R before they head to the studio.

Well we don't know what a new album would consist of.  Axl was still talking up the Bucket, Brain, Robin, etc. songs a few years back and it seemed he had every intention that they'd see the light of day.  So I'd expect to get those, if not a mix of some new songs.  I'd take anything we can get at this point, but to be greedy I'd love 2 more albums of what's in the vault from the CD sessions (if there IS that much in there), then an album solely from the current lineup.  All that within the next 5 years.  Get on it boys!  :hihi:  That's not too much to ask, is it?  Honestly, like I said before, I'll take anything we can get.

That's what me and Voodoo have been saying, the next album most likely will be alot of songs like CD material. Axl said back in 2006, that he had enough material for 3 albums. That, with the fact that this current line-up haven't had alot of time to write any material as of yet (touring). I would say there is a strong chance we will be getting CD 2 next, which is what I hope for.

Somebody stop him!  There's no get your hopes up for an album until the label approves the songs, enough for a whole album.  This is what made the rest of the guys stop talking.

US tour, just when I get new carpet too.  Not sure if I should be excited I have floor space to house my out of town friends or scream skip St. Louis the carpet is new!

Draguns, hopefully we get to meet up again before the show.  I've made 3 pilgrimages north from Delaware to see GNR.  Boston '02, NY '06, NJ '06...'10 would be great, but as a beggar I can't be a chooser.  :)

Is this thing in KC going to be televised?  Is he doing the Star Spangled Banner Hendrix style because if he is, I WANT TO HEAR IT!
I doubt it will be televised.  They rarely, if ever, show the Star Spangled Banner being played unless it's a nationally televised game.  Someone at the game will have to tape it.  Too bad he couldn't do this at a Patriots game so I could see it live.

I guess if the new album will contains some of the old material that wasn't in CD (material from Buckethead, Robin, Brain...) with re record parts by DJ, Frank n' BBF or new material written by the actual members. Maybe a mix of both options...

I dont think the "old" material would be all rerecorded. If Paul Tobias and Bucket still made up on Chinese Democracy, why would this time be different?

I still hope though that Bumblefoot and Ashba can write in some tunes too. They should use all this energy gained from the tour to provide some good shit.

Okay, here's how they can get past the record label.

Get Frank's new muscle car.  Axl drives, DJ riding shotgun,  Frank banging it out on the backseat.  Hit old Route 66 by the time they make St. Louis, they'll have that album done.

Try not to out drive Buckcherry by too much, I like that band.

A little preview perhaps.

like they did with Chinese Democracy

I would doubt any news songs that have not been released are leaked at shows.  My opinion only ofcourse.  The timeline DJ put out there doesn't make it sound that long to wait anyway.  The US hasn't seen this version of the tour that includes other songs of off Democracy that weren't played in 2006.  I think the US tour is consistent with the current tour that has been going on in 2010.  Once again, just me speculating.  Not written in stone or anything.

A February US tour would be gold. I'd love for them to kick it off in Las Vegas. I was planning on getting out there before the end of the year anyway, but if it's announced that Guns will be playing in February/March, I'd happily postpone my plans to tie this in. If they decide to do LA and Vegas several days apart from one another, I'll tie that in as well.

I guess I should budget GNR in to my 2011 expenses.

What we will believe is Ashba?s claim that the band will tour the U.S. in February. They just came off of two-month European tour and the 37-year-old says that GN?R will ?head out on the 27th to Australia then we?re back here in the states doing a tour.? While being able to see the band without having to but a plane ticket is pretty exciting news for American fan, Ashba still seems most amped about recording new tunes.

?Axl has a lot of good shit up his sleeves, so I?m really excited about it,? Ashba explained, ?It won?t take as long ? I promise.?

The only reason that the length of time it takes bothers me is because of the age of the band.

I'd like to think GN'R have a few more albums left in them, but the more time passes, the less realistic that becomes.

Well, the Stones are still going well into their 60's, so I'd say they potentially have plenty of time.
That being said, I really hope it doesn't take as long as the last one did.

IF they are doing a Feb tour, they have to announce it very soon cause of tickets etc.

I'd imagine maybe in Feb they start PLANNING a US tour and it take shape early Spring. that seems more realistic to me.

and once again, till Axl says it, I'm not getting 100 percent hopes up.

I think the US tour will work pretty much like the Asian/Canadian tour. They'll do some gigs down under and then head for a early-2011 US tour. I guess there's still plenty of time to set that up.

From Ron Thal:

Bumblefoot ‎(Just don't want ya getting frustrated if a GNR album doesn't happen quick...)

Bumblefoot << another GnR album.. >> We've yet to get in a room and write as a band - know DJ mentioned something about a new album, but don't want y'all expecting anything soon - other than old unreleased Chi Dem songs, songs need to be written, jammed, recorded, tweaked, re-worked, re-recorded, mixed, re-mixed, mastered, re-mastered, art, new art, label approval, a game plan from the label that Ax approves.... not as simple when it's on such a big scale...

Ron and Dj have different ways of looking at it.  Dj didn't put a time frame on the release, but said this regarding a new album:

Dj: "We're talking about that right now," he said.

And Ron is a little more conservative:

Ron: We've yet to get in a room and write as a band - know DJ mentioned something about a new album, but don't want y'all expecting anything soon - other than old unreleased Chi Dem songs, songs need to be written, jammed, recorded, tweaked, re-worked, re-recorded, mixed, re-mixed, mastered, re-mastered, art, new art, label approval, a game plan from the label that Ax approves.... not as simple when it's on such a big scale...

They're two different things really.  I think people were just jumping to conclusions and making their own assumptions, thus the confusion.  Ron himself has even intimated that there were leftover songs that he has done some work on, as have Axl, Richard, etc.  That's basically what DJ confirmed with his comments.  He never said they had been writing new stuff while out on the road and they plan on getting it out by years end or anything like that.  He said Axl's got some great stuff, and it won't take "as long" for it to come out.  Quite vague if you ask me.  We all know how long it took for CD to come out.  Even if this one takes half the time, it's still a long time.  Settle down people.  Let's not make this into more than it is.

How about that impending US tour?  Let's take care of that first, shall we?

I think this down to DJ being the new guy in GN'R, and maybe wants to make everyone excited an happy. And also in his defence, he probably isn't aware of the waiting and the traditional speculating from GN'R fans.

Where as Ron, has seen this since 2006. And Ron probably thinks back to some of the things he said in his early days, in which fans jumped on and made their own judgements on. Ron knows better than DJ, how we GN'R fans get overly excited about just about anything positive sounding. And fair play to Ron, he came out and gave us the true situation if you like.

But it's not DJs fault, he is just like Ron was in 2006, not aware of us crazy GN'R fans.  ;D

Both are right.

Dj is excited about the idea of a new album.

That made some people to jump to conclusions and "expect" an album soon.

Bumble just made sure people don't start the "waiting game" and then get pissed at Dj/the band if there's no new album in the shops within a few months!

No, you misread.

He's saying that new tracks would have to start at the very beginning of that long process, but the songs that didnt make it to Chi Dem are a little further down the line in terms of production.

BBF isnt saying that the older tracks will be released separately or earlier.

I think it would be awesome if GNR would put out a Deluxe Chinese Democracy with maybe demos, a DVD of one of their shows from this tour and maybe stick a couple new songs on there, the new artwork/booklet etc.

I don't think that that necessarily HAS happened yet, but I think it COULD happen.  I think getting DJ to do what Ron and Richard did for CD, re-record some guitar parts to give them a presence and sense of integration into the material itself, would be a relatively small task in terms of getting the rest of the material from the CD era out.  I think it's feasible based on what happened with CD.

I think most of us agree that re-working parts is a possibility, and no one is ruling that out. Its pure speculation though, none of us have a clue.

What bothered me with the above post was the suggestion that songs were being worked on without bumble's knowledge. Like there was some kind of Axl-Ashba secret project that Bumble didnt need to know about. I can't believe I'm writing these words, some of the speculation here is way beyond any perceivable reality.

songs are like short stories and maybe he and Axl have some great ideas for subject matter and maybe DJ has some awesome riffs brewing.

That's the only negative aspect surrounding the interview with DJ. Because now the media are reporting that a GN'R album maybe closer than we thought. Which is not the case really, since they have alot of work to do yet, as Ron said.

And that same media will be quoting DJs' comment in future write-ups, when the album doesn't appear as fast as the comment implied.

Just unfortunate really, the media should also report Rons' comments too, to make it more realistic.  : ok:

I think it's pretty clear that they are, in a sense.  People were jumping to the conclusion that a new album was on the horizon because the current lineup has been working on new music while out on the road.  DJ NEVER said anything remotely close to that, but some people went there.  So Ron was just killing that rumor before it got out of hand.  We've heard from just about everyone involved that there is more music in the vault.  When we hear it is an entirely different question.  DJ seems to think it won't take "as long" as CD.  But even that is vague at best.  So both guys were right in their own way.

Just unfortunate really, the media should also report Rons' comments too, to make it more realistic.  : ok:

They are, but like this:

New Guns N' Roses Album Drama

Last week, Guns N' Roses guitarist D.J. Ashba was the first in the group?s inner circle to publicly mention anything about the status of a new project by the band.

At the release party of the new video game, "Call Of Duty: Black Ops," in Santa Monica on November 4, Asha commented on the band?s plans, saying, "We're talking about that right now. We've been throwing around a bunch of ideas and it should be good, man. We've got a lot of good stuff on the plate coming out. It won't take as long, I promise."

Nothing concrete, nothing set in stone; simply the first reference that something is in the early stages.

Did Ashba speak out of turn, or is it simply that the mere mention of anything connected with new GNR is enough to turn fans heads around? After all, "Chinese Democracy" was 13 years in the making.

On Wednesday, guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal tried to calm the rising tide of fan interest when answering questions on his Facebook page.

"We've yet to get in a room and write as a band," notes Bumblefoot. " know D.J. mentioned something about a new album, but don't want y'all expecting anything soon. Other than old, unreleased ['Chinese Democracy'] songs, songs need to be written, jammed, recorded, tweaked, re-worked, re-recorded, mixed, re-mixed, mastered, re-mastered, art, new art, label approval, a game plan from the label that Axl [Rose, lead singer] approves.... not as simple when it's on such a big scale... Just don't want ya getting frustrated if a GN'R album doesn't happen quick..."

DJ posted the link to Perez Hilton...............

I think he needs to clarify though, cause he is new to GNR, and doesn't realize what the fanbase went through with Chinese Democracy.

What does that even mean?

In many cases people chose to ignore key words/phrases such as "wish", "believe", "hope to" and translate then into meaning promise/guarantee etc.

I guess many band members realized after a while that it's often better to keep quiet than to answer questions with things like "we hope to have....". Even though that was the truth. They did hope to do things at the time etc.

Just means, Axl is gonna get a lot of unjust criticism when a new album doesn't come out till 2014 when he never said anything about it.

When that puts u in the top 3 trending topics, it becomes a big deal and should be clarified by DJ and he shouldn't keep perpetuating it by posting links to the story if they don't have something in the works.

where does DJ Use the words wish or believe or hope to have? He doesn't.

He says "Wont have to wait long" "I Promise" "STuff Coming Out"

I know u are doing your spin control, but DJ obviously misspoke and should come out and retract that before it makes Axl look bad.

DJ is mostlikely right when he said "fans won't have to wait long for the band's next studio album"  CD did take 13 years.   So what are the chances that we will have to wait that long again.  Especially, if they rework some of the old songs that are already written and recorded.

Clever words on DJ's part.

D makes a good point.  GNR is topping searches all over this internet thingy.  ;D
Pretty damn cool if you ask me...but like D said, this buzz has a negative side to it in that some will perceive the absence of an album soon as an affront...dumb but true.  but also true that many are dumb. :)

It can't hurt to support the band with a good word under some of the many articles posted.

Geez...the Guns N' Roses world is so weird. Thing is that the fans themselves makes it weird.

I mean, there's a member saying something and then, the next minute, the movie begins: speculations, "hopes" (then, when things don't happen as they want become into trashed hopes and then all the wrath), "dreams" (then, when things don't happen as they want become into trashed dreams and then all the wrath), "he promised...", reading between lines, etc. etc. etc.

Give Guns N' Roses a fuckin' break, please. A leg of the biggest tour in band's history has just finished.

No way, they are on a roll.  Besides DJ and Ron started it.  They want to work and we're right behind them pushing.

DJ's comments made the news here in Belgium (saw articles in a few newspapers yesterday, including 'Le Soir' in the culture section).

Proof (if needed) that people are interested in the future of the band, just like us  :)

And some sounded very positive, they should have mentioned Ron post as well though instead of hipping it as a fact already...

Im sure there will be a follow up album to CD and there is no doubt there have been ideas flying around as DJ said.  Ron is basically saying they have not sat down in a studio to record or re record any songs yet.   I say lets just sit back and enjoy GNR on the road.. What more could we ask for, we have GNR touring again in full force.. a new album will come eventually but in the meantime lets just enjoy the GNR tour and CD...  : ok:

I think most of us agree that re-working parts is a possibility, and no one is ruling that out. Its pure speculation though, none of us have a clue.

What bothered me with the above post was the suggestion that songs were being worked on without bumble's knowledge. Like there was some kind of Axl-Ashba secret project that Bumble didnt need to know about. I can't believe I'm writing these words, some of the speculation here is way beyond any perceivable reality.

That wasn't my intent on my speculation.  Its like this, when Chinese Democracy was being recorded I highly doubt Axl called Robin to tell him Bumblefoot is recording some added guitars to the tracks.  He probably just did it.  I wouldn't see it as a "secret project" as I assume Bumblefoot would've already recorded parts a few years ago.

I think it's very cool that Dj says this regarding a new album:

"We're talking about that right now"

"We've been throwing around a bunch of ideas"

"We've got a lot of good stuff on the plate coming out"

"Axl [Rose, vocals] has a lot of good shit up his sleeve, so I'm really excited about it."

somewhere along the way, this thread got hi-jacked and went way off course (shocker, right :hihi:).

And as a result i feel like the magnitude of this interview was missed. DJ said a U.S. tour will start in February!!!  : ok: and gnr put this on their official communication tools so there is a strong likelihood this will happen (it is at least the plan as of this month - of course, things can change).

i have been so fired up since hearing this news. and i know ALOT of people that want to go see them live if they play in or near philly. i'm keeping my fingers crossed and hopefully sometime during this holiday season we start getting some dates leaking and confirmations!

Where do you see the tour in February on GNR's "official communication tools" -- I really hope this happens. :)

when i said "put this on their official communication tools" i meant they put the DJ interview there. DJ dropped some major tour plans in that interview so considering that GnR put the interview on FB and on this site (HTGTH), i think it's fair to say that this wasn't just a random comment. basically, that there are (or at least were) plans in place to begin touring the States in February. now plans can change all the time, but i'm hoping the actual details are in place and they are just planning a formal announcement.

DJ could just be bringing that video back up because it's a pretty high profile interview he gave.  It got a lot of attention. It could have nothing to do with the information he gave.  More of a self promotion kind of thing.

Or it could mean GREAT things.  But I wouldn't get too excited about it.
