Title: new dvds?
Post by: BA on April 22, 2003, 04:35:41 PM
i dont think we have this so here goes.

obviously post whatever new dvds youve all been buying.

i the last ones i got were carlitos way,a bronx tale and the other day i bought the gnr dvd,sex drugs and rock n roll. however when i got it home and went to play it i realised my dvd player is not the right region to play it so that was a waste of 12 quid.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre, special edition, Texas Chain Saw Massacre!!!

Very cool to own.

Also, I only have A Clockwork Orange on video, and that is getting pretty old now.

So I definatly want to buy the DVD, especially seeing as it usually quite cheap.

I also want to buy the Rocky box set, as well as the Halloween boxset.

I really enjoyed Sweet Home Alabama (it's a chick flick, guys, so don't bother.  Last DVD I bought was Red Dragon.  Much better than Hannibal IMO (of course, I didn't like Hannibal at all)   Red Dragon is more along the lines of Silence of the Lambs.

kj_jive:  You haven't made it to chickdom status quite yet, but I will warn you, watching another chick flick might just push you over the edge!

I didn't mean that guys couldn't/wouldn't enjoy Sweet Home Alabama, I just think that it is a movie that the female sex would appreciate more.  You guys would probably enjoy it just because you get to see Reese all throughout it. :)

Have you....you know.....checked downstairs yet to make sure?

When was the opperation?

Were you aware of it?

 ;)

Although, we did have an interesting debate about sex change and being gay the other day....but I will save that for another thread, seeing as it has no relation whatsoever here  ;)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, I finally bought A Clockwork Orange on DVD today.
And, what else can I say? Masterpiece in every sense of the word.

Don't worry!  It doesn't count since you watched it with your girlfriend.  You had to watch it under duress.  So... guess you're still a guy!   ;D

Watched Darkness Falls tonight.  Thank God I didn't buy it, only borrowed it from a friend.   I hate scary movies.  Don't know why I watch so many of them.   ???

This past weekend I watched (rented, not bought) Two Weeks Notice with Sandra Bullock (sp?) and Hugh Grant.  I absolutely loved it.  It's a romantic comedy, so if you aren't into that kind of thing, don't bother.  If I ever have an extra $20, I'll probably buy it.  To me, it was as good as Sweet Home Alabama! [yes]

Also watched The Unsaid starring Andy Garcia.  It's a psychological thriller (I guess).  No serial killer or anything so it's not too grotesque.  It kind of reminded me of Primal Fear.  (remember the one with Richard Gere and Edward Norton)  The young guy- don't know his name- even reminds me of Edward Norton!  Anyway, I enjoyed it, too.

I bought Catch Me If You Can with Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCapprio (sp?), but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.  My hubby said it sucked.  I'll have to let you know on that one.

Well, finally got around to watching Catch Me If You Can.
Hmmm...one of those that wasn't wonderful, but wasn't truly awful either.  Haven't watched any of the "extras" yet.  It was interesting because it was based on a true story.  At the end, some info scrolls across and states that Frank has made millions helping companies protect themselves against fraud.

I wouldn't say that it sucked...

I watched Road to Perdition, but didn't really like it.  Tom Hanks has always been an actor that I enjoyed watching whatever genre the film happened to be.  (war, drama, comedy, romantic comedy, etc.)  I just didn't enjoy this movie much at all.

Fuck yes, I definatly recommend it.

It is one of my favourite films of all time, fucking fantastic storyline.

It may be extremly violent, but there is a reason for it, it isn't just a brainless violent beat 'em up type of film.

I would give it 9 out of 10 at the very least  [ok]

Sukie it looks like you have good taste in movies , so why did you like sweet home alabama?? i think it was pretty boring and cliche even for a romantic comedy. [peace]

Title: Re:new dvds?

Well, Neko, what can I say?  I'm a sucker for cliche' romantic comedies...Everybody's allowed a bit of bad taste every once in while, huh?

Last dvd that I bought was A Guy Thing.  (?)  Think that's the right title.  I let a friend borrow it so I can't check right now (well, I could look it up online, but too lazy).  The scoop on this movie is...rent it.  Definitely funny enough for the $4 to rent.  Don't buy it.  Just my 2 cents, though.  To me, it is not a must have for your collection.  It is funny, but I got a phone call in the middle of watching it and took the call.  If it had been really good, I wouldn't have answered the phone, know what I mean?

I'm beginning to wonder why I bother buying dvd's at all.  I should rent first then if I really love it, I could buy it.  But then, I don't want to spend the money on something I've already seen.   :-\

I came up with a lot of DVD's over the holidays: Use Your Illusion I, Use Your Illusion II, Spider-Man box set, Daredevil, and X2.

It is f*cking awesome (and 10.5 hours long). Here is what is on the DVD (Matches and Segments):

Ric Flair vs. ... (shown in their entirety)

1. Harley Race Starrcade (11/24/83)

2. Dusty Rhodes Starrcade (11/28/85)

3. Barry Windham World Wide Wrestling (01/20/87)

4. Ricky Steamboat Clash of the Champions VI (04/02/89)

5. Ricky Steamboat WrestleWar (05/07/89)

6. Terry Funk I Quit Match Clash of the Champions IX (11/15/89)

7. Royal Rumble (01/19/92)

8. Sting Undisputed World Title Unification Clash of the Champions XXVII (06/23/94)

The DVD will also feature:

*Debut match with the WWWF vs. Pete Sanchez 3/1/76

*A day in the life of the Four Horsemen

*Flair'd match with Triple H from 5.19.03 Raw with a post-show tribute that has never-been-seen before on TV

Plus all the promos & controversies surrounding his greatest matches against Harley Race, Dusty Rhodes, Barry Windham, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Terry Funk, Sting as well as his 1992 Royal Rumble victory.

The are tons and tons of extra material with buildups and promos. It really gets you into the fueds.

The only problem is, I've only seen about 3 hours of it so far (All of the Harley Race Segment, match and Fued, His WWE Stay, Terry Funk segment, His match with HHH and extras with it, and two easter eggs), but I will carve out time later.

I really can't wait for the Steamboat segment. Actually, Maybe I should watch it now.

I also can't wait for the new Mick Foley DVD. It will have footage from WWE, WCW,ECW, Smoky Mountain, and FMW. That will rule all kinds of ass.

That actually sounds pretty good. I wish that my local video stores carried more wrestling DVDs. I don't really follow wrestling anymore, and I don't want to get back into buying the DVDs. I wouldn't mind seeing the Flair/Funk stuff again though.

I also heard about the Foley DVD. I might end up buying that one. He's my all-time favorite wrestler, and I've been partially following wrestling since I heard he was coming back for another match. I probably won't be able to resist the DVD when all the promotion kicks in around the same time as his final match.

Here is whats in store for you with the Foley DVD:

The following full matches will be on the new Mick Foley two disc DVD set that comes out in January:

Cactus Jack vs. Vader (4/17/93 WCW Saturday Night match in which Mick gets dropped straight on his head and suffers a real concussion)
Cactus Jack & Maxx Payne vs. Nasty Boys (4/17/94 Spring Stampede PPV from Chicago)
Cactus Jack vs. Sabu (6/24/94 first ECW match)
Cactus Jack vs. Chris Candido (11/18/94 SMW)
Cactus Jack vs. Sandman (2/4/95 Death match)
Cactus Jack & Raven vs. Terry Funk & Tommy Dreamer (11/18/95 ECW November to Remember)
Cactus Jack vs. Mikey Whipwreck (3/9/96)
Mankind vs. Shawn Michaels (9/22/96 WWE In your house: Mindgames)
Cactus Jack vs. HHH (9/22/97 Raw match)
Mick Foley vs. Terry Funk (5/4/98 Raw match)
Steve Austin vs. Dude Love (5/31/98 Over the Edge PPV)
Mankind vs. Undertaker (6/28/98 Hell in a Cell)
Rock vs. Mankind (1/4/99 Raw) (Mick wins the title)
Cactus Jack vs. HHH (1/23/00 Street fight at the Royal Rumble)
Cactus Jack vs. Sting (6/20/92)
Cactus Jack vs. Sabu from ECW (9/30/94)
Jack Foley & Les Thornton vs. British Bulldogs (9/13/86) (His long forgotten WWE stint as a jobber, and this is a good match too)
Plus tons of vignettes, promos and a Confidential feature.

I've already saw the match listings for the Foley DVD somewhere else. It looks like they cover pretty much everything with the exception of his last two matches. I'm particularly glad they put the Foley/ Austin match from Over the Edge '98 on there, but that's probably because I think that's the best match ever. Austin beating the hell out of Foley while trying to fight of McMahon's evil deeds is what the last wrestling boom period was all about.

The last dvd I saw was The Notebook.  Ahhh... nothing like a good old fashioned sappy romance, let me tell you :)

As for the last video (going with the old fashioned theme), that one would be The Virgin Suicides.

The last movie I saw in the theatre (being quite detailed with my answer) was Hitch.  It was great!!  I really liked it :)

Ugetsu monogatari (1953) - "Tales of a Pale and Mysterious Moon After the Rain" - (informal literal English title)
i bought this dvd again, cause i dont have it in paris ...

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0046478/

amazing movie. by The Great Kenji Mizoguchi

only one problem : you become very cynical and critical towards nowadays production after watching masterpieces like that.

i am serious, if you can find this movie somewhere, just do it. you will never see movies the same way.
in 1953.
now, nothing, nothing comes to like 10% of its power.

HIM - Love Metal Archives Vol. 1

I like that they still plays for small crowd.
For exsample this DVD includes few live performances from Semifinal, Helsinki. It?s great, that the biggest band in Finland of all time, were still (2003) playing in small rock clubs like Semifinal (capacity about 100..).

Good man. It's the only season missing from my collection, I know that I need to pick it up sometime, but given it is one of my least faves, there is always a DVD that I want more...It does rule though.

Are the extras any good?

While I'm here, the last DVD that I bought was...I haven't got a clue, actually. Coen Brothers collection, I think (Big Lebowski, Hudsucker, Blood and Fink)

So you have series 7 then?  6 is not great but it's far superior to 7.

Are the extras any good?
I'll get back to you on that, since i don't think we have a Red Dwarf thread (or do we :-\) i'll probably use the wrestling thread, been busy watching Deadwood today (Awesome series, so happy i downloaded the whole of season 1, 4 episodes in and it rocks...) so i ain't got round to watching it......

I can't say I've seen it, I had to IMDB it, but I do like myself a bit of Bill Paxton.  8)

As far as season 7, aye, I have it on video. It might not be as good as the earlies or season 8, but I just think that it's less cheesy than seson 6. Season 6 is fun, but it's just really corny in places. Season 7 has some great episodes and some cool set pieces. Though I think it's fair to say that both seasons are far from Red Dwarf at its best.

The extras on the other Red Dwarf DVD's I've got are awesome. I really want to buy the season 8 DVD, because I've got that on video too.

One of the best westerns there is, very good film a particular favourite of mine, although i am biased, Bill Paxton is my favourite actor :D Kurt Russell is awesome as usual to.  Back on the western trail, Deadwood, awesome ;) have i mentioned that already :P

The extras on the other Red Dwarf DVD's I've got are awesome. I really want to buy the season 8 DVD, because I've got that on video too.
Should get them all, the dudes really have gone all out with the extra's......other series from the past released on DVD should take note.  I'll be getting Series 7 in about a month when it drops in price (Music Zone new it's like ?15.97, but then within' a month it'll be ?9.97).  I don't believe Series 8 is out just yet although i think it's due very soon.

A film that is not worth watching more than once usually isn't worth watching at all. The exceptions are films with a twist, suspense films... But that does not make them good movies, it just means that they have a good twist, that you didn't expect that the butler did it. If I'm watching a film on my own, if it is good enough I will often rewind. Like a child that rewinds his favourite scenes, I guess. I do it all the time.

The second or third time of watching is when I tend to get the most out of a film, now at least.

I feel like that aswell.  I find that If I dont like the movie, I will just stop halfway through.  But if I do like it I'll find myself watching it in excess of three times.  I have seen Donnie Darko about 6 times, this movie has a twist... but I still needed to watch it half a dozen times to get every piece out of the movie, really take it in.

I usually re-wind really good scenes.  Or, if I am watching a suspense or a crime movie or something, I will rewind scenes if I think they have clues in them.  Like I'm trying to figure out the evidence or something.  I was constantly re-winding in "The Village"  :)... and I know people are always saying that movie isn't good, but I think its great.  I know it isnt a HORROR, but thats not what it's meant to be... if you want to see a M.N.S movie you cant expect horror, but a damn good movie none the less.

Sorry - thats my rant... :P

The Village.. First time I saw that, I must have rewound over ten times. The scene with Joaquin's long dialogue (why must you lead...) that brilliant filmed scene when the monsters come into town and Bryce Dallas Howard is waiting for Joaquin... Ivy's 'my sister cried a lot'. I figured that film out, kind of, but that didn't bother me at all. The twist is the last reason to go and see that movie.

Exactly!!!  I rewound it over and over and over.  I also liked the part where they first discover the skinned pigs.  I couldnt re-wind that bit but because the flies' noise was so annoying.  I rewound the meeting scene and when what was in the boxes was being displayed.  I cant say I quite figured that film out to the T... but that was its purpose I think.

Beverly Hills Cop Trilogy.....?12.99.....Bargain! :D :smoking:

Well, yes. But, if you're looking for a real bargain, and you don't already have it, there are a few stores selling The Matrix Experience/The Matrix Collection or whatever you want to call it for ?19.99. That's the ten disc bastard. And I thought that my Alien Quadrilogy for twent pounds was a bargain.

I also got my Godfather trilogy for about twenty five quid, which I thought was quids in. The other week though I saw it being sold for ?15! Fifteen fucking pounds! For two of the greatest films ever made, an all right third outing, and the bonus disc!

Alien Quadrilogy is definately on my to get list....

....i got bored and stopped watching halfway through the first Matrix so i'll pass on that one.

Dude. I beg you to give the first Matrix another try. Sure, if you didn't get through the first one the first time then you'll probably hate the second and the third.

But everything about The Matrix rules! Best. Action. Film. Ever. Well, asside from maybe Die Hard and True Lies........

But, seriously. It isn't a high concept film. I know very few people who didn't have their minds blown when they saw it for the first time. Though, I guess that was back in the day...........

Seriously. Watch it on your own, even.

Me, I loved all three. But I can see why people detested the second and the third. I cannot, however, gage why anybody would not love the first!

Yeah, i might.  Maybe it's because i was watching it on Channel 5, the reception for it in my room has always been ropey, maybe on a widescreen tv sat on a comfy sofa i might enjoy it.  I have limited time for Keanu Reeves though.  Point Break & The Bill & Ted films aside, i'm not a fan, at all.

And on the subject of great action films, good call with True Lies, Bill Paxton rules in that :D

One of my fave action films is Con Air, great no brainer fun, i constantly argued with my media teacher in 6th form telling him that film is wonderful, he despised it though.

"Define irony: a bunch of idiots dancing around on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash." :hihi:

Speaking of DVDs, the Baywatch series are gonna be released in the near future, starting from Season 1, i best get saving....... :D

The X-Files - Seasons 4,5,6,7,8, and 9

I bought each season individually for what, at the time, seemed ridiculously cheap at 170 squids. I found out a few weeks ago that you can now buy every season, including the movie, for ?67.97!! (http://www.amazon.co.uk/X-Files-Complete-Collectors/dp/B000X41AY8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1200138742&sr=8-1) That's about, what, 130/140 of your dollar? I paid more than double that!

I hate my life.

Last DVD i bought was Curb Your Enthusiasm

Which one? Have you seen six yet?

Best season yet!! (Maybe)
