METALLICA Announced As 'Record Store Day' 2016 Ambassadors

Record Store Day has announced its Ambassador for 2016: Grammy Award-winning Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees METALLICA.

METALLICA is no stranger to Record Store Day, this year set for Saturday, April 16, a special day in support of independent record stores and record store culture worldwide, now in its ninth year.

"Independent record stores are part of METALLICA's DNA," said METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. "They have been pivotal in shaping each one of us into the music fanatics we've all become. We could not be any prouder to be Record Store Day Ambassadors for 2016 and are looking forward to screaming from every rooftop the next few months about everything independent record store and beyond."

Throughout Record Store Day's near-decade lifespan, METALLICA's support has been more than noteworthy with in-store appearances, (remember Mountain View, California Rasputin Records in 2008, when the band met their fans for hours to kick off the very first Record Store Day) and a healthy handful of special releases. In fact, members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo made big news just last year when the band's cassette-issued demos collection, "No Life Til Leather", ended up as Record Store Day 2015's highest seller. As well, Trujillo's lauded biopic, "Jaco", about legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius, was RSD 2014's Official Film and a special Record Store Day exclusive version was released on DVD for Black Friday 2015, including a bonus CD featuring tracks from Trujillo himself.

This year the band's official release will fit into a wider theme of Record Store Day 2016, highlighting the relationship between U.S. record stores and their French counterparts, between Record Store Day and "Disquaire Day," between music-loving humans in the U.S. and France, following the tragic events in Paris in November 2015. METALLICA will release "Libert?, Egalit?, Fraternit?, Metallica! - Live at Le Bataclan. Paris, France - June 11th, 2003", a CD featuring a live recording from the club, with the band, Record Store Day and independent record stores donating proceeds to benefit Fondation de France's Give For France charity.

The live recording setlist includes "The Four Horsemen", "Leper Messiah", "No Remorse", "Fade To Black", "Frantic", "Ride The Lightning", "Blackened" and encores "Seek & Destroy" and "Damage, Inc."

METALLICA Begins Mixing New Album

METALLICA appears to have finally begun the mixing process for its long-awaited follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic" album, tentatively due before the end of the year.

The band's studio progress was revealed last week by Dan Nykolayko, a member of the METALLICA staff who interviewed frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich for a Metallica.com article on the 20th anniversary of the group's "Load" LP.

In the article, which was posted on June 9, Nykolayko wrote: "I managed to corner Lars and James at HQ before they locked themselves in the control room with Greg Fidelman to start mixing the new album."

It is not clear when the interview with James and Lars actually took place.

Ulrich said in a recent interview with Metal Forces that June will be a decisive month for the band's long-awaited tenth studio album. He revealed: "We're now coming towards the end of the musical creative process and we're starting to look ahead and the process of how we're gonna share this record with the universe. The month of June is basically when we're gonna sit down and figure what we're gonna do with it all; what we're gonna call it and what's gonna be on it."

Ulrich cautioned fans, however, that he is not sure if it will actually be released this year. He explained: "If the record doesn't come out this year, then it won't be because it's not done. It will be because there's some sort of cosmic reason that it would be smarter to hold onto it until next year. But the record will be done this summer."

The group has been recording at METALLICA headquarters in San Rafael, California with Greg Fidelman, who was the engineeer on "Death Magnetic".

The band has one live date on its schedule at the moment, at the new U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on August 20. That concert, at which METALLICA will be joined by AVENGED SEVENFOLD and VOLBEAT, sold out all 66,000 tickets in less than ten minutes back in March.

Good album. Some tunes are fucking amazing, especially Atlas, Rise, which IMO would fit on any Metallica album of the 80's. The only downside about this tune is Lars' extremely annoying and repetitive drum work.

Some tunes sound too much like Load/Reload, though. It's not that they're bad, but I don't think they rank up with Hardwired, Atlas Rise, Moth Into Flame and Spit out The Bone.

Solid effort for sure. If they'd gone with just like 8 songs, instead of a double album, this could've been a classic.

I used to drive all over the metro Detroit area (Cruising as it was known; especially Hines Drive) back in the mid/late 80's jamming to Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, & Kill 'Em All.

This is by far the best all around album since Master of Puppets. I never got into the direction Metallica took after Cliff's death (...And Justice For All & beyond)

Other than ManUNkind, Here Comes Savage, & Murder One, I LOVE all studio tracks on Hardwired, including the tribute to Ronnie James Dio, and the Deep Purple & Iron Maiden covers.

METALLICA has not done a full-length U.S. tour in more than seven years, but lead guitarist Kirk Hammett recently promised that the band will end that dry spell in 2017. Speaking with Billboard, Hammett said that the band's home country will finally get the trek it deserves. "We're very excited about it because it's been a long, long time since we've done a proper American tour," he said. "I mean, we've done European tours, Asian tours, South American tours, but we have not done a proper American tour as of late. So we're very, very excited about it, and we're very excited to be able to do it bringing new material to all our fans out there."

METALLICA will be touring in support of its tenth studio album, "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct", the band's first all-new studio effort in eight years.

The album went to No. 1 in 58 countries, including the U.S., where it topped The Billboard 200 album chart.

Hammett also hinted at METALLICA bringing out a "special stage" for the tour, adding, "It's gonna be really cool, really fun and very METALLICA."

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield recently said on the Nerdist podcast that the band will cap its live schedule starting in 2017 at around fifty shows a year. He explained: "My body has told me to tell these guys that fifty shows a year is kind of what we can do, so make the best of those."

Drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio a while back how METALLICA has changed the way it tours. "The old days of a year and a half on the road, I mean, that's not going to happen again," he said. "If our success has bought us anything, it's the freedom to do these things the way we want to do them, on our own agenda, on our own time frame. We don't really even need to have, like they say in the business, a 'product' out there. We can just sort of go out and tour if we wake up one morning and feel like it."

METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo told The Pulse Of Radio that the band is looking forward to getting back on the road in the U.S. "Oh yeah, it's exciting, you know," he said. "We haven't spent enough time in the States in recent years and it's been a while, so rather than going and hanging out in Europe and spending a lot of time there before we come to the States, we're actually hitting the States first. And that's something that I'm really excited about, because it's been a while. It seems like people are hungry for METALLICA again and they've been waiting a long time."

METALLICA played three shows in Copenhagen, Denmark last week and performed at the 59th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 12) in Los Angeles. The band also played an intimate concert for around 3,000 or so fans at the Hollywood Palladium that same night.

LARS ULRICH Says METALLICA 'Very Cautiously Decided' To Offer 'Enhanced Experiences' To Fans On Tour

Widely considered to be one of the most fan-friendly bands in popular music, METALLICA recently began offering "enhanced-experience options" designed to provide super-fans with a wide array of unique experiences at concerts and events around the globe.

According to Rolling Stone, the opening show of the North American leg of METALLICA's "WorldWired" tour on May 10 in Baltimore, Maryland saw a dozen or so fans pay $2,499 each for the opportunity to get a photo with the band and autographs and ask the musicians whatever is on their mind. They also got access to the "Memory Remains" exhibit of memorabilia, a mini traveling Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame that shows off the group's clothes, handwritten lyrics, original album art for "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets", cassette collections and actual instruments.

"We very cautiously decided to do experiences," METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone. " We spent a lot of time seeing what everybody was else doing. 'What's BLACK SABBATH doing? What's GUNS N' ROSES doing? What happens in the pop world?' It felt foreign to us and, dare I say, a little hokey. So we just had to sort of get to a place where we would get comfortable with that."

Paid meet-and-greets are becoming staples of the touring circuit and are seen by some artists as a necessary evil to survive nowadays. Other musicians object to meet-and-greets on moral grounds, believing they favor richer fans over poorer ones. Similarly, many people view the fact that groups charge fans to meet them as completely exploitative, since artists are usually aware that young admirers are prepared to pay any amount of money to see their favorite band, sometimes at their parents' expense.

Former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted called the paid-meet-and-greet practice "bullshit" in a 2012 interview. He explained: "My guys had been talking to me about doing those things, and they talk about KISS making money for this meet-and-greet. People will pay it, but that's not the point. I don't want to take money like that. If they want to buy a t-shirt and have something to show for it, that's what we do. You can't download a t-shirt.

"There are certain things that make sense to me. I have never charged for my autograph up until [I launched my own] web site. That is my first time in my thirty-year career that I have charged for my autograph, and I have signed for hundreds of thousands of people.

"I don't feel comfortable with charging people to meet me; I don't feel comfortable with charging people to get me to sign something when they are standing with me. If they buy it off the Internet and want an 8x10 or an autograph CD, they have that momentum. That's fine, but I'm not going to charge people to meet me. I just don't feel that's right. I'll pay to meet one of my old sports heroes, or something like one of the cats from the 1970s Orioles. I'll pay a couple of bucks for something, but I'm not going to pay for Gene Simmons. It's ridiculous; that's not what it's about."

Right?

I hadn't realized I had been on and off this board a few times under different member names for nearly 18 years.

I posted as kidrock on the first page with my song/album rankings back in 2001.
