Waiting for Promised Land....

« Reply #80 on: May 14, 2012, 06:12:44 PM »

I obviously don't know Axl or Slash and my observation about their relationship or lack there of is only hoping as a fan they would simply mend their relationship because I think it would be cool after all these years and as a fan of both. At the end of the day I am not losing sleep because of this shit. These guys are both millionaires and have a million other obligations to worry about.

GnR is almost like our favorite sports team. If you were a Chicago bulls fan during the Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen years, that team won 6 championships with those guys. Jordan and Pippen achieved the former together, and were the main components of that team although the other players made their contributions to achieve their level of success. If you are a bulls fan you will always cheer for them, and you should always acknowledge Jordan and Pippen were incredible together. If after they are gone they hate each other and cant even shake each others hands, it is sad as a fan of the bulls and those guys Because you really don't want the faced if the franchise of the most significant era of the team to be at that level of disfunction as a fan. With that said these guys are in the past and will not play togeter anymore and you will continue to cheer for the bulls And hope they continue to succeed. Btw I am not a bulls fan, just trying to make a point.

My point is like it or not Axl and Slash were te faces of Gnr in their heyday. Together along with the Guys inducted in the rrhof they made Gnr the biggest band on the planet at one time. As a fan even of the current line up, why would any Gnr fan want the animosity to continue? I think maybe that group of fans needs the annimosity to continue to help them sleep out of fear of any reunion. Because then if they do become friends there is always that possibility again. I know there won't be any reunion, even if they were best friends again it won't happen because all these guys have different agendas. It's kind of the reason Slash continues to work with Myles and his current band, because he calls the shots. In Vr it's more of everyone is equal. And back in Gnr it would be back on Axls terms which I doubt he wants at this stage. So yes as a fan of both these guys I wish them the best and continue to hope that some day they can get past this rift.

Everybody has praised Axl for bringing Izzy and Duff on stage for a few songs. Do you mean to tell me you would hate to see Axl do that with Slash one day? Or how slash opening up for Gnr like loaded did. I am a Gnr fan and want to support everyone in the Gnr fraternity, team, etc. and I think we all should if you r true fans.
I never said I would hate it if Slash and Axl were to mend fences.  Frankly, I do not care if they do or do not make peace on a personal level.  It has no effect on me and is their business, frankly.

You don't necessarily have to be a man of steel to have accepted the fact that Slash and Axl parted ways in 1996, never to work together again.  16 years is plenty of time to accept it, even if you don't like it (and believe me I didn't).

Yeah, that's basically it.  It took me about three years, just before the turn of the century.  It's just something I made peace with long ago and have since moved on.

Just a note from a guitarist....

Did anyone else notice that Slash played the solos NOTE for note. He's never really done that, not sure if intentional or not, but it was interesting none the less. Particularly the Paradise solo...even back in the GN'R days he'd stick to the basic structure and just jam ; post GNR he does the same thing...adding in some of his more recent licks. But this is the first time I've really heard him play it as it's heard on the record. I always wondered if he even remembered how to play it exactly as is....guess there's my answer. But thought it be interesting to note!

MYLES KENNEDY Talks About His Performance At GUNS N' ROSES' ROCK HALL Induction (Video) - May 23, 2012

When asked how his involvement with the GN'R Rock Hall induction came about, Kennedy told Revolver TV (see video below), "It was brought up at the [Revolver] Golden Gods awards on April 11 in Los Angeles]. [Slash and I] were getting ready to [perform at the event] and Duff [McKagan, former GUNS N' ROSES bassist, who was presenting an award at Golden Gods] brought up the idea of perhaps playing at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction. At first I was hesitant. I felt like? The magnitude of its was so huge and I just didn't feel like I could step into that. But the more I thought about it, they just wanted to play for their fans and just have a good time. And I was like, 'You know, they don't wanna let their fans down and I don't wanna let them down.' So I just tried to kind of sing with the melodies and sing the lyrics the best I could and just stay out of the way. It was about them, it wasn't about me. . . It took about 24 hours for me to man up [and decide to actually go ahead and perform with them at the induction]. 'Cause, obviously, you can't step into those shoes ? you just can't ? so I just did the best I could."

GUNS N' ROSES Keyboardist DIZZY REED: Why I Decided To Skip ROCK HALL Induction - May 22, 2012

EspyRock recently conducted an interview with GUNS N' ROSES keyboardist Dizzy Reed. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

EspyRock: I want to congratulate you on being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Dizzy Reed: Thank you.

EspyRock: How does it feel to be inducted as a member of GUNS N' ROSES and to see your name in there now?

Dizzy Reed: Well, it wasn't without controversy, as you know, but the whole concept was an honor. It came and went, and it is there, but right now the [current European] tour is the most important thing. I've just been focussing on that and believe me, it takes a bit of preparation for me to get ready to come out and do this. It has been quite a hectic few weeks with that and the tour leading up to when we got on the plane to head out.

EspyRock: I hope you don't mind me asking but considering the honor you were receiving, why didn't you attend the ceremony? Was that due to tour preparations or did you not feel the circumstances were right due to the controversy?

Dizzy Reed: Well, you know, Axl [Rose, vocals] decided not to go because he felt that it wasn't right, and I stand by him. The reasons he gave made sense to me and I agreed with him, so I chose not to go as well.

EspyRock: When you look at it all, the Hall Of Fame induction really just caused more damage than it did good, because while GUNS N' ROSES have always been under fire, it just ignited a new wave of hatred and abuse.

Dizzy Reed: Well, like you said "congratulations," we're in the Hall Of Fame, man, and that's cool. That's all there is to it now, time for people to move on.

EspyRock: Your induction represents what you have achieved throughout your career with the band, which now stands at twenty two years. Do you feel as if your role has changed over the years, especially as you're the second longest standing member next to Axl?

Dizzy Reed: You know, I don't think it has changed a whole heck of a lot, to be honest. [laughs] I just try to add, and I always have, what I can to the music in the studio and to the performance when we are performing live. I think, if anything, I've been given a little more freedom over the years because I've become a better performer. I've been given a little more freedom to do things that I wouldn't have in the past. In the past, it was, "You're not going to play on this song," and that was many, many, many years ago, but now things are different a little bit. Like I said, the most important thing is that I just try to add what I can to make the songs better. In the studio, I just try whatever I can, throw some ideas around and just see what sticks to the wall, but it's all about making the songs better. Live, it is kind of a similar process, but I kind of know what is going to work and what is not going to work. I try not to have any redundancy of sound or tone or anything and visually for the people who are there to see the show.

Slash Talks Guns N? Roses? Future, New Album ?Apocalyptic Love,? and More

[On A Guns N? Roses Reunion] ?That last Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thing was it? I?m really sick to death of even entertaining the concept.?

May 25, 2012 12:00 PM EDT

On April 14, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame held their 27th annual Induction Ceremony. Despite the sell-out crowd of 7,400, the mood was iffy from the get-go.

Adam ?MCA? Yauch, one of the three members of inductees the Beastie Boys, was too ill to attend. He died just three weeks later. But stealing the front-page headlines was Axl Rose: Just days prior to the event, Guns N? Roses? fiery frontman sent a letter to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame refusing his induction, and accusing his former band mates of ?a seemingly endless amount of revisionism and fantasies.?

For the band?s former guitarist, Slash, this latest stunt closed the book on a Guns N? Roses reunion once and for all.

?That last Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thing was it,? says Slash in an interview with The Daily Beast. ?I?ve been entertaining the idea for other people for years, but it?s never been my inclination to get back together. Given the opportunity for us all to show up in one place, that was the only reasonable platform for us to do it, and it didn?t happen. I?m really sick to death of even entertaining the concept.?

Slash ended his tenure with Guns N? Roses in 1996 amid escalating tension between himself and Rose.

?When Axl took over the name and the partnership, which we sort of allowed to happen, I decided not to continue on,? he says matter-of-factly.

On the surface, not a whole lot has changed with Slash. At 46, the man considered by Time to be No. 2 Greatest Electric-Guitar Player ever still sports his signature obscured look: hat resting atop long, black curls, shades, nose ring, and crotch-suffocating jeans, his relaxed monotone oozing rock legend insouciance.

Since his departure from Guns N? Roses, Slash formed the supergroup Velvet Revolver in 2002 with singer Scott Weiland. When the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2008?rumored to be because of Weiland?s diva-like antics?Slash decided to go solo, releasing his eponymous self-titled debut in 2010. Slash featured an all-star cast of vocalists, including Ozzy Osbourne, Adam Levine, and Fergie, and received positive reviews. His sophomore solo album, Apocalyptic Love, isn?t an experimental LP, but a full-fledged collaboration between Slash and singer Myles Kennedy, formerly of Alter Bridge. And yes, there are killer guitar riffs aplenty.

?The title?s a tongue-in-cheek joke about what you?d want to be doing on the eve of the apocalypse, so it?s basically ?sex before the end of humanity,?? says Slash with a chuckle. ?All things considered, I would imagine that you?d want to get one last one in before it all came down.?

Born Saul Hudson in Hampstead, London, his mother was an African-American costume designer who once dated David Bowie, and his father, who was white, designed album art for musicians like Joni Mitchell. When he was five, the family settled in Los Angeles. His childhood friend, Steven Adler, used to crank his amp up and jam along to Kiss?s Alive II, and pretty soon the two decided they should start a band?with Slash on bass guitar.

?I went to a local music school and said, ?Okay, I want to learn how to play bass,?? recalls Slash. ?The teacher had a guitar while he was talking to me and he played a Cream solo, and I said, ?That?s what I want to do!? And it turned out to be lead guitar.?

He soon received the nickname ?Slash? from actor Seymour Cassel, who was his best friend?s father.

?I was about 15 or 16 years old and I?d always be running around putting different bands together, so he always saw me in passing and started calling me ?Slash.? It?s a nickname that stuck with all my friends,? he says.

After forming the band Road Crew, with Adler and bassist Duff McKagan, and then joining Hollywood Rose, which featured singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin, Slash unsuccessfully auditioned for Poison. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because in 1985, Slash joined Rose and Stradlin in Guns N? Roses, with McKagan and Adler rounding out the group. Around this time, Slash established his iconic look: Top hat and shades.

?None of it was pre-planned,? he says with a laugh. ?The hat I picked up in ?85 because I just thought it looked cool. It was something I felt comfortable on stage with and could hide behind it. And I adopted sunglasses because I?m not a fan of the bright lights.?

Guns N? Roses played L.A. nightclubs like Whisky a Go Go and The Roxy for nearly two years before releasing their debut album, Appetite For Destruction, in 1987. Featuring the hit songs ?Welcome to the Jungle,? ?Sweet Child o? Mine,? and ?Paradise City,? the album went on to sell 18 million copies in the U.S. alone?making it the best-selling debut album in the U.S.

Thanks to their hard-partying, hell-raising reputation, Guns N? Roses was branded the ?Most Dangerous Band in the World,? and several of the band?s members?Slash included?developed addictions to heroin.

?The ?80s for me, I didn?t feel that strongly about what that represented,? says Slash. ?A lot of it was very transparent to me?musically and stylistically. But that was when my time was, so I think Guns N? Roses was very much the antithesis of that particular scene, which is what made us so cool.? He adds, ?We took all the stuff we?d heard about from other bands before us, and we took it to eleven.?

After releasing four more studio albums, culminating with the low-selling 1993 cover album The Spaghetti Incident?, Slash officially parted ways with the band in October 1996. He was followed out the door by Adler?s replacement on drums, Matt Sorum?who was fired by Rose?and bassist Duff McKagan, who quit in 1997. While Slash returned to prominence with Velvet Revolver, Rose would take 13 years to produce Chinese Democracy, the first album under the Guns N? Roses name since The Spaghetti Incident? With production costs totaling close to $14 million, it remains the most expensive album to be produced in history, and sold less than one million albums in the U.S. By contrast, Velvet Revolver?s 2004 debut, Contraband, sold close to three million copies stateside.

Prior to creating Velvet Revolver, Slash was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2001?a form of congestive heart failure caused by years of substance abuse, and was originally given just six weeks to live.

?The prognosis wasn?t good but I was able to rehab and get myself back together,? he says. ?It was pretty close there, for a second.?

Slash is a lot happier these days. He?s been sober since 2006, and has two young sons with his wife, Perla, who he?s been married to since 2001. A huge film buff, Slash formed the horror movie production company Slasher Films in 2010, and their first movie, Nothing to Fear, stars Anne Heche and will be released next year. While many of his favorite movies are of the horror variety?including Rosemary?s Baby, The Omen, and The Exorcist?he ?thought Bridesmaids was great!? and though he laments ?the lack of rock n? roll guitar players these days,? he still thinks, ?Jack White, who?s very current, is awesome.? Meanwhile, he?s having a ball on tour with his new band mates, dubbed Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators.

?This lineup of people has been a hassle-free, fun endeavor,? he says.? These guys just want to play.? He pauses. ?There?s no unnecessary baggage.?

Yeah, they ran the same story/quote.  In the beginning of their article is says "Former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash told The Daily Beast."

Am I missing something here. Huh

No, at first glance it looked like BM poached the quote and ran it as it's own as a stand alone story - I didn't see the credit given to the Daily Beast.

I'm partial to The Beast, the great author Buzz Bissinger (Friday Night Lights, 3 Days In August) is a contributor to that site.
